You can shape the bowl more easily by taking an old spade drill bit and shaping it to a semicircle shape on a bench grinder or use a dremel. Then sharpen it on each side according to the direction it turns, only half of each side (easier to have a picture than a description). Use in a drill press to fashion a bowl shape.

Well, I had a go at making one of these today. With really limited tools and no Dremel, I still have a bit of hand sanding to do 😂 After reading one of the other comments, after bulk removing with the forstner bit, I moved onto a coving bit in a router for a smoother bottom and it worked a treat 👍 I’ve really enjoyed having a go though and it’s gonna be a b’day gift. Love the channel and feeling like maybe I’m at a somewhat similar stage in my woodwork journey - rather than watching seasoned pro woodworkers making it look all too easy and getting frustrated that I don’t see the same results 😂 Looking forward to more videos and maybe trying another project soon… Cheers!

I made my first spoon on a lathe. Trimmed off a little lass than half half of the "bowl end" with a hand saw, then finished with a dremel. The handle and the back of the "bowl end" were finish sanded on the lathe. All else was finished by hand sanding. Fair results. I am a beginner on a lathe and at applying finish. I just used a "food safe" oil.

Pure Tung Oil is food safe, but Tung Oil Finishes, such as the Watco used here are not necessarily so. Long Chain Alkyd is the first resin mentioned in the Watco TDS, followed by Tung Oil, but the percentage of Tung Oil isn't specified. No claim of food safety is made by the manufacturer. Their solvent is mineral spirits. I make cutting boards and other food-use items, and use 100% pure Tung Oil (either Hope's or Real Milk & Paint), and apply an initial coat thinned 50-50 with food-safe citrus solvent. I don't see a danger from contact with coffee beans, though.

Good job, and enjoyable to watch the steps as the spoon took shape. You do a great job of making it clear how the project progresses. The only thing that rang harsh for me was your claims about doing something with simple tools, then comment about your luck because you knew where the spare band saw blade was because otherwise you'd've had to wait till the next day. Though a band saw is certainly a very useful tool, it's not one that is in a lot of small shops, and there are other ways to do that step as well. It seems that if you're intent on showing those of us without the more professional toolset how to do stuff, you could think about how to get around without a band saw.

I have a bass with a mahogany body. Mahogany is fantastic wood. Of course, that bass weighs about 3 tons... I actually like the shape of your spoon better than the ones in the article. It looks terrific with just the Tung oil. I think one of the advantages of hard woods in general is you don't have to sand them as much because the tools don't damage them as much. On the other hand, you'll need to buy new bits and saw blades sooner and the wood is more expensive.

I really like the spoon and your choice in wood. Now my next comment belies my confusion: Your attire. You make efforts to protect your lungs, but your lack of clothing leaves your largest organ (your skin) very exposed to potential damage. I am also wondering about the framer’s belt and the snow boots… why? You are attractive, but is the attire really about increasing the quantity of your views? You don’t need a gimmick, your work is good enough reason to watch.

@woodificould
@woodificould 5 ай бұрын
It's funny you mention this because I think this was the first video after I got my new belt, and I felt like it looked a little empty on camera. So I added a few things but then realized I was really feeling the weight after a few hours of standing. Now I only put stuff in it that I'll need for the build, and I get sooooooo many comments telling me I look like an idiot because my tool belt looks empty. If they only knew how heavy a hammer gets after 6 hours of hanging there...

@woodificould
@woodificould Жыл бұрын
lol! I never actually heard the "alphabetizing the letters" thing, but I'll be using it from now on. And the mask is mainly for safety. Both from projectiles (because it's not unheard of for things to get wrong and get sent flying), but also from all the dust and fumes that are always floating around. When I don't wear it at the shop, I noticed I tend to cough a lot the next few days. I'm just trying to be responsible now that I might be encouraging others to get into woodworking

@woodificould
@woodificould 5 ай бұрын
When I first started my channel, I was convinced that no one would look at me and assume I knew what I was talking about, so I wanted to have something that would grab attention long enough until ppl saw that my work had substance. I was proven wrong in the best way possible and found out that most ppl were actually interested in my process. I'll take the L on that one. I've switched my approach since then, but I made this video a year ago, so not much I can do about it now (and I kinda like how the spoon turned out so I don't want to take it down). Live and learn, you know
