I like this, and I bought a laminator. However, this seems a bit wrong to me. You use a laminator pouch and do two covers at once. A laminator is just heated rollers. There does not seem to be a need to use a pouch, which is designed to seal up things. Rather a single sheet could be used, and the laminator would just be heating up the back side of the cover, which is ok. I noticed that lamination plastic is also sold in rolls, so you can cut single sheets from it, not pouches.

A very useful presentation. Many thanks! Do you have a video showing how to attach the laminated cover to a text block? My experiment so far have not been successful-folding the laminated cover seems to weaken the adhesion of the laminate to the cover stock.

Yes, I also wonder about this, and plan to try it. However, the pros also use laminators, abet big professional ones, to do perfect binding so there is a history there.

Great Video, thank you. I also have a question (not directly related to laminating, but to the paper to use). My book is 5.25 x 8 inches. I'm going to print 2 up on 11 x 17 paper. Does that leave me enough room? 2 x (5.25 x 8) is 10.5 x 16. That leaves only 1/2 in on the width and 1 inch on the length. Enough room to print, laminate and cut?

I just feed Laminate from a role into these machines. More expensive up front, but so much cheaper in the long run, also you don't need to mess around with a second sheet and cutting stuff apart. Also seems to stick a lot better.

I'm looking into doing something like this but instead of gluing to the book I want it as more of a dust jacket. Would I need to change any of the steps to achieve that?

You're welcome. I'm glad this helps. I use the heaviest weight paper I can find in ledger size (which works well for covering 5.5'x8.5" book blocks.) Commercial paperbacks will have something around 100# / 270gsm for the cover stock and you can find it online, but I rarely have luck finding locally. It is often listed as "cover cardstock."

Very nice vid! Now im starting my custom dustjacket projects for my comic collection. Problem is those specifi dust jackets are a bit bigger in length. Do you know any laminate pouch or rolls that can accomodate it? Cant find any from amazon. And how thick are your laminate sheets again? Much thanks mate!!
@DIYBookbinding
@DIYBookbinding 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you like the video. I use 3-mil thick laminate, which is about as thin as you can find in pre-made pouches. Since pre-cut materials are made in standardized sizes, I don't think you will find pouches to fit your pages. Unless you plan to invest in a roll laminating machine (these are common in elementary schools - if you know any teachers you might be able to work something out), your best option is to buy a roll of film and make your own pouches. Amazon has thermal rolls that are 27 inches wide by 250 feet long. If you cut a length of laminate off the roll that is slightly longer than twice the length of your paper, you can fold it in half and make your own pouch. You will need to cut it down the middle as well to make it narrow enough to go through the laminator. You will get 2 pouches from a 27 inch wide piece. This will be a lot of work, but save you from buying a very expensive roll laminator. ~Andrew

I have the same issue as everyone else, I followed your exact steps but the covers curl up no matter what I do. I used a 250gsm card and pressed the books in a heavy flower press and left it overnight with no luck. Do you have any other suggestions?
@chlorophylle
@chlorophylle 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video. I just got a laminator and ran the covers through it. They look great, but how do I stop them from curling up? I'm binding a soft cover book with your hot-glue method. I didn't bind the book yet, because I'm trying to get the covers not to curl up.
@DIYBookbinding
@DIYBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! The only approach I've used to minimize curling is to use a heavier card stock. Book publishers use use cover stock that is around 100# / 270gsm. Commonly available card stock is more like 65#/176gsm. If you are already using heavier stock, then you might try pressing the covers under a heavy weight after cutting them apart. I hope this helps. ~ Andrew

@@DIYBookbinding It does help. Thank you. I'll try your recommendations. I found these soft-touch velvet laminating pouches and ordered them: www.southwestbusiness.ca/en/lam-pouches-12-x-18-5-mil-soft-velvet-touch.html Should get them soon. I love the feel of the soft-touch book covers. The only downside is that they only had 5mil pouches. BTW I love all your tutorials, they have helped me tremendously. Keep them coming as you discover new ways of binding.

Can I use a thermal binder with laminated covers?
@DIYBookbinding
@DIYBookbinding 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the melting temperature of the thermal binder. Also, I've had issues with laminate separation when re-heating a laminated cover. This is something you'd just have to test.

Excellent tip. Two covers laminated at the same time too. Do you think the laminated cover will be ok if used in a perfect binder, and does 270gsm card stock prevent the covers from curling?

The cover still keep easy to bind with the plastic on?
@Chemshaw
@Chemshaw 2 ай бұрын
i know this is an old question but it will bind just fin so long as no laminate on back, though the spine crease can be hard to mold as the laminate can make it stiff. so you may not get a clean crisp spine line.
