Today was the day that I decided to challenge myself and create a piece of furniture that YOU GUYS have sent to my DM's over and over! This project was definitely a challenge however it turned out amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Let me know if you would like to see more in depth tutorials like this one!
••• I do also want to mention that the total cost of this project was approximately $290. This does sound high, however when you compare it to other pieces at the same size, it's truly a fraction of the cost! ***

I’m obsessed with rattan everything at the moment so love this diy. I kind of think not being able to remove the glass is a blessing in disguise, it’s an added layer of protection for the things inside so they won’t get as dusty.
@nicanonymus2491
@nicanonymus2491 4 жыл бұрын
Right? I would leave the glass in on purpose because I hate when everything gets dusty. This way you can even vacuum the rattan with the nozzlebrush because its sturdy.

Only problem I see is if you live in a high humidity area. Even with the air conditioning on my closets get musty inside if I don't leave the doors slightly open. The cane in furniture was meant to allow air flow so the contents inside don't get mildewed or musty before air conditioning was invented. Obviously where Drew lives this is not a problem and has the advantages you mentioned of keeping things dust free. I'm going to try this DIY but for my situation I need the air flow of the cane. So glad Drew did this DIY.

One thought: if you want to use a wider mesh cane, you could use brush-on glass frosting or frosted film or Contact paper. It would knock the shine right down. I agree with the commenter who said having the glass in place will help help keep the inside of the cabinet and it’s contents from getting dusty.

The drawback turned into a nicer piece I think! The birch veneer looks so expensive compared to the beige and having the glass in the door means more protection from dust for whatever is inside! Love it :)

The good part of this tutorial is that is easy enough for someone without a ton of tools. A lovely piece for beginners. I think removing the glass would have been possible, but not really necessary and as others have mentioned helps keep dust from collecting inside the book case.

Hey dude, i really like your vids. Love your up-cycle projects! Safety-wise...I would really love to see you using gloves and a mask when dealing with epoxy. You use it often and it worries me every time. In the woodworking trade we have a principle that goes like this: "if you there is a substance that have the same properties then a known toxic one, use the lesser toxic substance." this goes for toxicity for humans, animals and nature in general. Always choose the lesser toxic one. (In Denmark, woodworkers and not allowed to use epoxy unless they have completed a safety course in how to handle it) Epoxy is great for a lot of things and when it's hardened, it's stable and wont de-gas. There's many kinds of epoxy, but common among them is during the application of it, it releases fumes that are known to contain carcinogens and contact with your skin can lead to rashes and allergies towards any product containing Isocyanates (the active substance in epoxy and MANY other things). Also if you heat it up again, it will release these fumes. So say fx. cutting it with a power saw, drill or the like, fumes release again. Also the fine dust when sanding is bad. When in our private homes we don't deal to often with these toxins, but I often see DIY'ers use the stuff a lot because it's strong and convenient, but you are running a risk. Please please Please, wear a gloves and a mask when dealing with it. Keep up the content and stay safe my guy :D

@austrianpenguin
@austrianpenguin 4 жыл бұрын
In that case the shelf doesn't fit hangers, but tension rods can actually break apart cheap furniture due to the pressure it puts on them. There are proper "devices" at handycraft stores, in case you ever do such a project yourself. As a poor student I literally depended on preventing my furniture from falling apart >.

I am dying over this DIY, thank you for sharing!! I've been wanting to do a cane webbing DIY project.. and I love how you make this one so simple. I want to do something like this for my IKEA malm bed frame, and add cane to the headboard and frame around it. I'm seriously going to get this cabinet though lol

Awesome, awesome, awesome !!!!!! I always wanted one of those but like you said, they can get very pricey...but now I can make one myself and get the look AND stay in my budget!!!!! Also, I think getting the bookshelf in that natural wood finish was actually perfect and probably better than the beige one!! Oh and btw, I hadn’t watched any videos in a while but I definitely missed watching yours!!! Always cool, fun, well made, with tons of beautiful DIYs!!! Oh and you always crack me up at some point in every video!!! I love your personality !!! Ok I’m gonna stop now but great job!!! Lol!!

you have to completely mix the epoxy somewhere else first, and then apply it. if you just squeeze from the tube like at 7:17, they don't mix properly and epoxy that isn't properly mixed doesn't properly cure. It looks beautiful tho!

I think the type of epoxy he got has a double syringe and is in instant mix, so it mixes in equal amounts of resin and hardener so you don’t have to mix it elsewhere(: I know for other epoxies that you want to mold or apply you have to mix it, but even on the company website it says it creates the adhesive regardless because of the application mechanism(:

@@makaylarillamas5147 Nah, I looked at the packet online and it says you need to mix it completely for 20 secs before applying.

@@makaylarillamas5147 I was going to say that I've used plenty of double syringe two part epoxies before and that the syringe is only to make sure the same amount of each is dispensed, and then you have to mix it yourself --- But you're right, I just looked up that specific brand and it does emphasize that it instantly mixes. Super weird then that it didn't cure properly.
