Wait till those little bolts where the chain is bolted to breaks because of centrifugal force, that chain is going to go flying in somebodys head or face / leg and cause horrific injuries. DONT DO this MOD.

What a great time saver this is. It looks like it cuts grass down in no time. The person who came up with this idea now has plenty of time to play lawn darts with the whole family out in the yard.

I made an attachment for my grandmothers weed wacker 35 years ago out of an old bicycle chain,,, got tired of having to constantly replace the twine in it from the heavy brush she wanted cut down… thankfully, grandpa was a blacksmith and taught me how to make a lot of tools… with a little ingenuity and about 30 minutes in the machine shed, I had a nice gas powered brushhogger out of that old weed wacker…. Don’t get your legs anywhere near it while it’s running though… you won’t have a foot!

This project is a very visual way of teaching the principal, just because you can do it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

As a side benefit it will remove trees, fencing, feet, and just about anything you can hit with it.....

About the only thing that would make that more dangerous, is if you used a chainsaw chain, instead of a bicycle chain.

That looks like a really good idea until the pin brakes on the disc and the entire chain flies off and catches you around the ankle. Might wanna think twice about using that.

My wife's cousin recently injured himself damn near fatally when a welded-on attachment (didn't get much details on the shape or size) to a gas-powered weed-eater blade came off at speed and hit him on the inside-top of the calf muscle, and severed an artery. He was out in the field, hit the ground and was trying to yell for help but was several hundred yards from his house. Somehow, someone heard or saw him and they went and got him from the field. The whole village chipped in and donated blood as he'd lost so much he was almost out of the survivable zone. A 2 week hospital stay recovering from the emergency 'surgery' they do here, (this is Thailand) plus the transfusions, and now several weeks still of limited motion and sensation. And, BTW, yes, he knows how to weld, done it for years. Welding ANYTHING to a blade which revolves at SUCH a high rate of speed is extremely dangerous. Stress and fatigue cracks from spinning and flexing, (especially if the rotating piece is out of balance by even the most MINUTE amount) can appear and grow in metals, and there's no real way to tell when or how they'll fail. After a while, one strike at a rock or almost-totally submerged pipe, etc. could easily be enough to knock off an attachment, especially if it's NOT the first strike. Personally, I think you should remove this vid. There have been many others advocating using chain and steel cable (from motorcycle brakes, etc.) as cutting lines, but this is probably the worst I've seen.. You are doing a genuine disservice to viewers AND THEIR PEOPLE, (since family goes through a traumatic event WITH their loved one). You are encouraging them (you know you are) , with COMPLETE DISREGARD for their varying mechanical-fabrication skill levels, all the variables of the different materials which may be pressed into use, and natural factors like terrain and handling experience, to ignore safety concerns, and attempt a (poorly engineered) modification to a piece of steel which, when used, will spin EXTREMELY fast, and create a very REAL and possibly lethal safety hazard, all for views, ego and $$. Sad.

I recall the day the boss handed us something similar to this. More over-engineered though, with big chain links like you'd find on a decent bike lock. Invented by an Italian farmer the paperwork said. Well we fitted it to the machines & away we went. Fucking incredible I can tell you. Smashes through brambles & even small trees with ease! Then one of the links breaks off & flies out so fast you can't even see it, just like a bullet.... At that point the whole head becomes imbalanced (we had four chains on ours). So you take a bolt cropper out of the van & cut the other three chains to the correct size, & away you go again. It was like playing russian roulette. The safe working distance is usually something like 5-10 metres with a regular strimmer. It went up to about 50m using that chain thing.

Why not weld the chain directly to the plate ?? Why not use a worn edger blade that already has the correct hole ?? When that little bolt breaks the bit of chain, at 7,000 RPM, will go thru your window at 150 MPH !!

Use a chainsaw chain instead of a bike chain, fasten multiple razor blades to it and then modify the shaft with a u-joint. Perhaps swinging it over head like nunchaku and cut the grass while you're upside-down doing flips.

Need a heavy duty steel guard on that medieval contraption.

I've seen this using zip ties instead of a chain. Easy to replace & won't hurt if it breaks.

A better way to do this is to use the outer plates of the chain top and bottom of the disc and join with the chain pin. Much much safer.

Hopefully this dude is crafty enough to make his own prosthetic legs after that chain let's go.

My coworker was mowing his mother-in-laws lawn when he hit a steel coat hanger, I always leave mine in the yard too, lol. A piece of it flew out of the mower and stuck into his leg, he looked down and passed right out. When he woke up he looked down and passed out again!!

Based on where he's running that thing it seems a lawn mower would've been 600% more efficient.

I would never dare to use something like that on my brushcutters, there’s a reason why no big tools manufacturers don’t have mowing blades like this, very dangerous in my opinion.

Wow that`s a great D.I.Y. idea,and it has inspired me to make one similar to yours ,but it is for trimming hedges ,high branches from ladders etc,I have used 2 full length power saw chains each about 1 metre in length cut into 4x18 inches long & attached to a half inch plate metal disc with stretch bolts for safety similar to a propeller configuration of a plane on to a heavy duty high R.P.M 247 volt large drill chuck ,with modified twin handles to power the device.It is a bit tricky to keep it stable with both hands as it viciously tears its way through the leaves (at very high speed),thick branches , fencing posts, & masonry,etc one minor drawback is it sometimes comes away from the hedge and everything else it is completely destroying towards my head and chest, where by I have to force it back away from me so that the propeller like high speed chains carry on tearing their way through the leaves,and any thing else that just happens to be in its way it is very,very effective ,but alas it seems to have a mind of its own when in use,in other words it tends to travel to where it wants.The odd thing is that my neighbor keeps telling me ,pleading with me ,that it is extremely dangerous and could decapitate my head from my shoulders,or any other part of my body below my torso.I told him no way it will do that its a DIY project from Facebook its got to be safe ,they would not have allowed it to be posted if it could injure anyone,so go away and allow me to use this wonderful DIY tool,OK I have only tested it once up to now ,but I have not had a scratch from it as yet.Oh by the way I just love that music on the video,it is just like the start of a Health & Safety vid for using power tools.

Imagine triming grass against chain link fence. That would be a tangled up mess. And it would tear bark off trees.

The flexible chain will wrap around an object it can't cut, stalling the engine or breaking the driveshaft.

I am old enough to remember "old time" edgers. Basically a round blade you held in a vertical fashion to "edge" your lawn. String trimmers are much more safe and useful!

Apart from it being extremely dangerous, it isn't cutting....it's bludgeoning. You WAY overloaded the bearings and drive. 10 secs of mechanical consideration would have ruled this approach out. Some people should just stay away from tools, it seems.

The chains are much heavier and consequently, make the equipment less effective than it was in its original format. This will result from the decrease in the number of rotations per minute. In addition to this, the fuel consumption will increase because due to the increase in weight caused by the chains, you now need more fuel to get the same amount of work out of the tool.
