Chainsaw Carving a Double Mushroom

Going out to a festival over the Labor day weekend. They have an Auction every year to raise money to maintain a 168 nature preserve. I am making this Mushroom Sculpture for that auction.

I was surprised by how little it brought. And surprised again that the unfinished, unsigned (?) single stem live demo brought almost as much. I bet that when some see this video, they'll regret not bidding it up.

Cy, hope your treatments are helpful. Thanks for this one as I am on this path right now. Bought the 5 inch Makita grinder varible speed with paddle switch. Does your makita have a delay on startup? bearing noises? Oh yeah, ever use an electric chainsaw for this?

My variable speed grinder is a Bosch, it does not have a start up lag I have used electric for this before but it was a homeowner grade saw and I destroyed it. I hear the Makita electric is good for this but have not had opportunity to try one. Not a fan of paddle switches as some times when doing this I need to use an unorthodox grip on the grinder that does not allow for a paddle switch.

It requires a lot of talent to carve wood, at least to carve it like you do. I carve splinters and bits of kindling. I hope you are healing well.

I am healing well. Thank you. Less pain everyday. I will be starting radiation treatment in about a month though so we will see LOL.

Can you install a carving bar onto any chainsaw?

No it has to be made to fit. Carving bars usually fit several saw models, but if your model is not listed I wouldn't risk it.

How dry is those. Logs. Anybody? Just curious

I have had it sitting for about 1 1/2 years in my wood lot. So its not super dry but its not fresh fallen either.

Ok cause I’m just found some nice pine logs and a couple maple logs , I’ve been learning most stuff, the one thing I’ve yet to get proper instructions on is how fresh or dry I want my wood to be before sculpting. thank you, and great work
