The snare's in dubstep are actually on the 3, not on the 2 and 4 - I mean u would still use them to count, and counting halftime with the beats at 70 can help - But u should explain that the tempo is actually 140 and its just the beats that are rolling at 70 --- REAL AUDIO PLEASE

So one thing with dubstep is its roots are heavily planted in vinyl. Can this method be applied to those still using records? I would assume 4 bars would be fine, but quick cuts on one bar like demoed here would be very difficult.

Nick Pantazides I see this as a pure exercise which unfortunately can't be done with vinyl (unless you're really good in beat juggling, at which point you're so good with counting bars that this exercise is useless for you). It's a good demo of how the tracks are structured side by side, on vinyl you'd have to already start them in time so that the phrases match. Listen carefully though and you'll figure it out, then it's just a matter of cueing the vinyl up at the right time. Example, some tracks have 8 bar intros, most of them would have 16 bars though. Some tracks will cold drop, others will have 8 bars of beats with a little (EQ-able) bass at the end. And also there are lots of possiblities of how many bars there are in the middle (particularly up until the break and so called 2nd drop, but there are some tracks which don't have that, recent example would be Mala - Expected)

Samuel Hackson thanks Sam. I understand this and have been a dubstep dj (recreationally) for years, but was intrigued by ellaskins technique and was hoping it could transfer to vinyl or if other methods/tips/tricks would work better.
