DJ Solitare's Retro Goa Explorations, Episode 58 - X-Dream: Panic in Paradise

The 58th in my Retro Goa Explorations series of videos in which I present some of my favourite 'Goa Trance' tracks from the '90s.
In this series, I go back to my first experiences in the Goa Trance electronic dance music movement starting in late 1994, drawing upon my recollections of hearing specific music at certain events and using my classical music background explore the elements that I believe make these tracks so great.
We are now into music I first encountered in the '96-97 season, starting in September 1996, and this track comes from one of the best compilation CDs I bought after moving to London, a real classic production by an iconic project that consistently got the biggest reaction I saw at London parties: Panic in Paradise, by X-Dream. After I share some background, I present my observations about the music while playing the track; I then give a few closing comments before presenting the track on its own without any commentary.

Absolute masterpiece that I had the honour to experience lysergically at Ozora perhaps 2011. The 303 (-like) bassline, that gliding lead melody and the perfectly executed mix makes up both a highly functional dancefloor stormer as well as a truly beautiful piece, full of positivity. I bought the 12" only a couple of months before my son was born, as a kind of gift to his future self. "This is what made your stiff old father go nuts in his youth".

What a spectacular intro! It immediately transports you into outer space, with its sounds of motion, rumbling, and twinkling portraying celestial objects perfectly. And that bass line? it is indeed a Galloping baseline, injecting the raw power onto the floor 💥 I love that “Knou Know Know” sound repeated throughout the track I can imagine how a dance floor would go Wild on this one, another great track. Thanks Mark, keep em coming

Really love the tunnel records vinyl with protoplasm and psychoactivity this track was on. Still play it quite often. Thanks as always for the video

The sounds and atmosphere and bassline on this track are amazing. The bass line is something else. Maybe suited to a big venue like tyssen street. That sharp rhythmic synth line, remember this ripping through tyssen street. It was completely new and original. Maybe more minimal in melody but in a good way , but amazing for it's sounds vibe and atmosphere.

Absolute masterpiece from x dream. Seemingly, it defined the twist in Goa trance towards darker techno driven madness…. That will blossom in “radio” in full swing.

Had to play this one real loud here now! I first got this on the tip 12" before Phosphorescent came out and in mid 1996 this was way ahead of its time, as if 1997-1998 was leaking into the past. Other artists and labels would follow, with compilations like Black Rhino over a year later starting to traverse some of the same sonic territories. Worth mentioning is the incredibly dense and beautifully sculpted bass that the X-Dream blokes always had, ever since the very early days, making this feel like something completely different from most of the other releases at the time.

@DJSolitare Just on my channel. I tend to talk about whole Goa/ psy albums and perhaps group some albums together. I like that you talk about tracks because, as a follower and dj of this music, the tracks themselves are each special. I haven't done any more videos in a while. We might even have started at around the same time. Peace, brother. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM IN AUSTRALIA
