►SCRIPT
Now, the part of the song that we want to focus on is the build-up; which normally occurs 32 beats right before the drop. So that’ll be the only section we’ll be affecting with our High Pass Filter, Noise Filter, Effect and Volume Fader.
So the first technique utilizes the following things: the High Pass Filter Knob, a 1/2 Delay Effect, and the volume fader. And this technique works best in strengthening an already good build up.
So the first thing we’re going to do is select our delay effect and set the beat parameter to 1/2.
Next we’re going to cue point our song so that we can visually see what parts we should be affecting.
So Cue Point A, will be the section, where we should start//doing this trick, and that’s the build up segment of this song, and this is 32 beats away from the drop.
Next, lets mark Cue Point B. This section is 16 beats away from the drop. And this cue point here, will visually cue us, to start cranking this technique out even more.
Because the build segment of this song, will really start to be going off here, we’ll have to match its energy.
[1st Technique Explanation]
So with our effect armed and our track prepped, the first thing we should do when we reach the build up segment, is start cranking out the High Pass Filter knob from the 12 o clock position to the 2 o’clock position.
And at the same time, activate our delay effect, and bring the effect knob from the 7 o’clock position to the 9 o’clock position.
And we’ll do this till we reach the cue point b section of the song
Once we reach that point, it’ll be time now to only focus on the High Pass Filter Knob, and Volume Fader.
So what we’ll do, is that, as we near the drop, we’ll crank out that high pass filter knob to the 3 o’clock position, and at the same time, we’ll be dragging the volume fader up and down to get a stutter-y sound effect.
And finally once we reach the drop. We’ll bring the filter knob back to the 12 o clock position, leave our volume fader at the top, and deactivate our delay effect.
Now if you guys really wanna take this trick to the next level, you can also try cranking the high pass filter knob clockwise and counterclockwise as you near the drop.

Extra thoughts to share to go beyond this: 1) All DJs need to learn phrases, and to be able to hear when a phrase begins/ends. This means you won't need to mark up every buildup you do... You'll be able to hear those markers coming up... Without a marker! That's not to say don't use markers (they're amazing), but you shouldn't need them for this, you should be able to tell when you've got 1 or 2 phrases until the drop! 2) Be aware these well demonstrated tricks are golden advice for newcomers, but also the most common thing DJs do other than just let the buildup go alone. So don't stop at this advice - Develop your own, or at the very least, tweak it YOUR way so you don't sound like every other DJ who does this.

Hey not sure if you're still gonna respond after a year, but the problem I'm having is that I can hear whether a prhase starts or stops, but I can not figure out if it is going to be 8 - 16 - 32 bars. Sometimes I can kinda guess it by the waveform, but it's not always obvious. Does this just require me to know every song's structure by hard or how can you know this quickly?
@74Cheshire
@74Cheshire 2 жыл бұрын
@@strengthgains6827 You're going to find this doesn't change within each genre... Or at least not that I'm aware. In house and drum and bass and most of the long-established genres, it's every 16 bars. I think genres like trap it may be every 8 bars (any trap DJs able to help out here?). I can understand the confusion, it is VERY common that the first 8 bars and last 8 bars of a phrase to be extremely similar, especially at the start of each of those parts.

Nice video, big thumbs up! This video gave me the idea to set CFX on per track and set an empty track to noise while keeping my current playing track on filter. Using the EQ and volume on that empty noise track can even shape the noise sound more specifically. Add on top a subtle reverb on the playing track. Sounds nice to make an intro part of a song to have more texture.

Great video and awesome tips! I was wondering about what the next step is to up my game in equipment. I love my controller, don't get me wrong, but are CDJs the answer? It seems all the main stage djs at festivals and at clubs use those, except for a few people. What's the difference between mixing 4 CDJ decks instead of 2? Faster transitions or certain mixing techniques 2 decks can't do. From what I've researched CDJs could be a step back. More process to set cue points and limited functions. Plus it is expensive! Lol. I wondering how you feel about it all. Thanks DJ Carlo!

I remember when using a filter was the way DJs masked up a bad mix it took over from the spin back ..but now it's ment to be a positive tool to utilize . Have to admit if you have to be messing around so much with settings over and over the possibility of forgetting to changed them back or forgetting something is alot bigger . When you know exactly what your playing & when you find lots of spaces to mess around .. sadly I er the last 10 years what I have seen more and more is over kill with filters loops samples and the likes all crammed into each break down or drop ..it's like everyone can't cope with 30 seconds of just a good beat or a hook . Good tips as always ..but I'm seeing pioneer and Denon are moving back to bigger units without serato etc .. what can be done with just the bare unit ?

Hey Carlo, first of all, thanks for sharing so much, you're awesome! Second, I have a quick question. Can you recommend a way to somehow label tracks that have vocals? So that I avoid playing 2 tracks with vocals in a row.
@qirex9193
@qirex9193 4 жыл бұрын
A suggestion for you, as I've tried tackling this several ways. This is the most efficient and fast way I've found. 1) Setup playlists in your DJ software for categories of tracks you'll have... You could absolutely have one called 'Vocals' 2) As an example, I DJ drum and bass, so I have playlists for DnB sub-genres, like 'DNB Liquid', 'DNB Neuro/Tech/Dark', 'DNB Jump Up', 'DNB Jungle', etc. 2a) You could also instead make those folders, and make the playlists inside them specify qualities like 'Vocals', so you'd then have 'Liquid -> Vocals' and 'Liquid -> No vocals'. Whatever you do, you want all your basic searchable vibes clearly labelled. 3) As you add music to your collection, simply drag each song into ALL the appropriate playlists it belongs in. What this does is if you want to look up a certain type of song, you just look in a playlists full of those types. This is WAY faster than using the tag features, which I tried using, but found way too time consuming in practice.

Can you do a video on how to spice up and embellish breakdown sections that are calm before the build up?

One I like to do is take a Breakbeat and play that during the breakdown, it works best when there's a vocal or some kind of melody. Just be aware of doing this on a song that has a tempo change in the breakdown.
