How to Improve Your Echo Out Transitions

The "echo out" transition is a great way to improve the flow of a mix, and DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of its masters. While we can't all play like Jeff, we can learn a lot from his techniques and apply them to our sets. Watch above as Mojaxx demonstrates some of them in this week's episode of DJcityTV's "Tips and Tricks."

Great vid! I always use a combination of a (little bit of a) high pass filter and the echo effect.

I use Traktor with a Z2 and have been using the post fader effects to get that effect. I use delay as the first effect with a high amount of feedback and combine it with wormhole as the second effect to get a slight reverb with a funky kind of filter added to it as you turn the knob. As close as I have gotten to Jeff's technique.

Hey man great video. I just want to say that I own a Numark em-260 with the kaoss pad built in. The faders are bad but im a mixing type a dj not a scratcher. The point is that the echo effect on this mixer is great it help me so much in cutting off the song that is playing when im mixing to the next. I also use serato dj sl2 and DDJ-SP1 and im a happy person. I bought this mixer brand new back in the day.

DenonDJ's washout on the 1800x is THE most organic transition effect I have ever used in over 20 years doing two or more songs together. For me as of now it is up there with the backspin. It is that good, to me providing you don't abuse it... and if you know how to use effects it sounds so good that won't ever happen anyway. The two direction knob emphasizing two perfect timings coupled with a lill bit of filter complete kill with a natural roll similar to, well the ROLL it's just pure dj mixsex

I use Traktor Scratch Pro ... after pressing the hold button as in your video, use the dial or knob below it to the 1 o'clock or 2 or even 3 o'clock on the X1 to adjust the tempo of the echo out.

Great tutorial - I'm trying to work out how to replicate a DDJ-SZ (or 2) colour FX echo out can be replicated onto say a DJM900 Nexus 2 as it defo isn't the same!

Hey Mojaxx, what external effects hardware would you say works best for this? I’ve got an Alpha Recording System 9100, so ideally wanna avoid units like the KP3 and RMX, as they don’t quite match the sound quality. I’ve also dabbled with the H9, but really struggled to emulate a clean echo out, I don’t think those unit handle full tracks so well and are definitely optimised for guitars and keys. I’ve been eyeing up the Benidub dub, but would be good to get your suggestions on this.

My only beef is all those mixer except the traktor one cost soooo much still... The pioneer mixer jazzy jeff uses still goes for $400! Might as well get the rane mixer

***** ?? scratch djs usually use more simple mixers because mixers usually dont last as long due to all the heavy stuff you do it practicing, etc... my denon mixer ($200) actually outlasted my rane mixer ($1000)

The ttm 57 is a battle mixer with serato built in. It's the standard for turtablists these days. All the big scratch DJ's use the same one

If you turn the colour effect on the DJM 700 to around 8 o’clock (without engaging the filter button) then hit the effect on/off button, that will also give you a high pass echo as well. Just wish the 800 or 900 could do the same : ( Anyway, another great video as always !

Aaron Elliott Oh my God. I started out rocking school parties with two cassette decks and a mixer because I couldn't afford records. I still actually have all my tapes and some pro decks. I could also rock a party with youtube open in two browser tabs. Pardon me while I gag on my own dick now mister real dj.
