I bought the mavic air when it came out and I really need to upgrade after having a lot of issues with it. The air 3 seems really good to me and I don’t think that the camera quality is a massive issue compared to the air 2s as a lot of people complain. The air 3 comes with a better flight time, better obstacle avoidance and a dual camera system. Also the new o4 connection is a big upgrade for me because I usually lost connection after 300 meters or less. I’m also interested in the new functions such as waypoints and slow-mo at 4K/100FPS. For the price I get everything I basically need as I’m not a professional filmmaker or anything…

The censor might be smaller but it is a newer technology. believe me, This camera is way better with the smaller censor.

I had a Mavic 2. Crashed it last year. I’m purchasing the Air 3. Love that it does vertical shooting. 2.7k is good enough. Social Media tends to drop quality a lot. I love the waypoints is added to this. I’m pretty well rounded using drones so this is a great “hybrid” drone

I was wondering if it is more worth it to get the air 2s fly more combo or just the bare air 3 (they're both around 1k USD).

Still going to hold on to my Air 2s simply because the quality of the camera and flight performance are still excellent. Since the Air 2s has 5.4K video, I wonder what the final quality and resolution would be on a vertical crop compared to the Air 3. I also notice that the Air 3 looks super sharp which looks great but some may prefer the softer look in the Air 2s. The flight time, second camera, and better obstacle avoidance are certainly upgrades from the Air 2s.

This is actually quite true, it's weird how most footage I see on the Air 3 is way too sharp, without any sharpness adjustments like the Mini 3 pro has, I heard the work around it is to use the ND filters for it to appear less sharp, though I'm not sure about that one

I think the filters can help reduce shutter speed which will smooth out the movement. Since the fixed aperture is so big on the Air 3, it probably needs a very fast shutter speed in bright light. This will cause movements to look stuttery. @@23Firejet

So the vertical crop is going to be about the same in terms of resolution around 2.7k but a vertical crop on the Air 3 might look better because technically it will have a larger pixel size due to it using more area of the sensor. If you shoot in log, that should get rid of most of the over sharpening. But actually a lot of that is because we are shooting at high shutter speeds as well because most of us don't have ND filters for the drone yet so there's NO motion blur in most of my shots since I had to crank the shutter without an adjustable aperture

I mostly do stills, so I really appreciate the 20mpx on the Air 2S. Is the 48 mpx on the new Air 3 providing additional details? From my experience, the original Air 2 48mpx mode seemed to show no advantage over its 12 mpx images. Thanks

For stills, I think the Air 2S has the advantage, unless you also want the telephoto camera. I found the 48MP mode provided additional detail but not better quality overall so unless you need to crop in like crazy or print massive sizes, I'd just stick with 12MP

Hi Dan, i have a small question regarding the rules and regulations of certain drones in specific areas where you need a license. If im not wrong the mavic 3 classic is a C1 classified drone, is it the same for the DJI air 3? considering it is still lighter than the Mavic 3 air

C1 reaches from 250g-899g. So both the Mavic 3 Classic (895g) and the Air 3 (720g) are in the C1 category.

My biggest question would be how does the quality copare with the different apertures on the M3P. I kow for my M2P I was encouraged to only shoot 2.8 cause that was the sharpest, so even doing manual video, Id still keep 2.8, use my variable ND but then sometimes if im already in the air, just crank the shutter a bit if I needed any macro adjusting onthe fly. What would you say for the quality loss of having the variable aperture on the M3P and is it that much of an edge for just using a variable ND/shutter speed adjustment on the Air 3?

I've done a few tests on quality with the aperture on the M3P and it was good until about F8 where it started to get soft. But I just find landing to adjust my ND if lighting changes is usually not an option so having a few stops of room on the aperture + the larger sensor makes ISO 200-400 usable + you can always push the shutter a bit so you have more room for adjustment

Something I thought of was those floating water pads that roll out for people to lounge on the water. Put your landing pad on that and then roll it up after your drone returns home? Its an idea! Certainly more room for your drone to land that way.

Is there a significant difference in the look of the image between the mavic 3’s 4/3 sensor and the sensor on the air 3? I don’t really like the over sharpened “cell phone” look of the smaller sensors. I also don’t want to pay more for a small difference in the image lol.

The Mavic 3's larger sensor definitely provides better quality for both photos and video. You can notice it. If you shoot with the Air 3 in D-Log M, it isn't as over sharpened but for sure the difference between a 1/3" sensor and a 4/3" sensor is noticeable

I want to upgrade my drone, but confused between Air 3 and Mavic 3 classic. I shoot vertical video and I also like the larger sensor on Mavic 3 classic. Please recommend which is a better drone for vertical format. And if the telephoto lens is useful on Air 3. Thanks

If you shoot vertical video, the Mavic 3's larger sensor isn't much of an advantage unless the Mavic 3 gets a firmware update to allow native vertical video (it could). So for now, I'd say having the 2nd camera and saving some $ with the Air 3 would probably be best since in vertical, the larger sensor isn't going to be much help

Dronography is about the image. You can get a better image from the Mavic 3 Classic and crop the center to make a "vertical" in post and come out way better than with this tiny sensor in the Air 3.

@@therealjimmy5411 If you think about it, even with a larger sensor, the Mavic 3 is taking a 16x9 portion of that 4/3 sensor and then taking a vertical crop from that 16x9 cross section which ends up using about the same equivalent sensor size as using the full height of a smaller 1/3" sensor, especially when you factor in the pixel size of the air 3 is large since it's only 12mp. For photos, you'd be better off with the Mavic 3 since you can capture 4x3 and the higher resolution M3 sensor helps for photos, but shooting vertical video, the Air 3 is actually just as good for video when shooting vertical thanks to the ability to use the full height of the sensor

@@therealjimmy5411 I'm not saying you should get the Air 3, but the guy directly asked about shooting vertical video so a single metric dictated this particular recommendation. I personally use the Mavic 3 because I also shoot photos and horizontal video and the Mavic is better for that with the larger sensor

I will pass on the air3 and wait for the air 3s it will have a larger sensor. And the camera on the Mavic 3 could be used professionally not the air3 the air3 is a mid grade drone a larger sensor is always better than the smaller sensor the air3 would make a good beginner drone just like the mini3 pro they both have the same size camera small

Sold my Air 2s for the new Air 3. The 2s 17 minute real world flight time was a killer. You could watch the battery life tick down like the third hand on a clock. And the batteries would swell up and become unusable after a few months. Looks like you have to pay $1,000 just to get a different main camera when you step up to the Mavic 3 Pro. At $1,099 it only $100 more than the Air 2s price for twice the drone.

In this case I had permission. I was working for this event and video these cars often so was cleared to fly over these vehicles which were owned by the company I was working for. There were about 4 drones in the air flown by spectators and they were definitely not supposed to be in the air. One of them crashed maybe a few ft away from cars worth $400,000 so not smart! Plus literally 99% of my flying would have been over the water and not the cars. I was using the telephoto lenses for this reason so I was far away for everything except 1 test shot

It is funny how every time a new drone comes up, the vast majority of experts (who usually get the drone for free from DJI) start saying that the new one is the ONE. Well, it usually is amazing. Same as a previous drone was a year or two ago. However the thing is the older drones are still amazing for 95% of people. Consumerism model doesn’t care though eh ;)

I mean, it would be pretty bad if every new release was worse than the old one lol. Yes, as new versions launch, hopefully at least a few things get better. The question is if the new features help you or not...if they don't, don't worry about upgrading! Your old drone doesn't get worse when a new one launches but some of the new features might be compelling enough to make you WANT to upgrade

Eu tava afim de pegar um air 2s, acho um drone incrível e se o tivesse, não faria esse upgrade agora. Mais posso escolher o Air 3 pois é um drone mais recente. É o que irei fazer. Tenho o mini 3 pro e estava pensando no Mavic 3 Classic ou Air 2s. Aí vem o Air 3 e bagunça tudo kkkkk

Dronography is about the image. This is a downgrade from the Air 2s. Ohhh but two lens. BS, with different fixed apertures of 1.25 stops apart go fly it and see how fun it is changing lens and being 1.25 stops off of your exposure and having to fly back to adjust your Vari ND and then fly back to get your shot. The Air 3 should have been named Mini 3 Pro Mark II. Hard pass.

Split ND filters are being shipped by Freewell so this is not a problem anymore.

Stronger signal also means that you are less likely to drop signal even in visual range. I often drop signal on my Mini 3 even when I'm in visual range
