About me (the guy behind the cryptic three T's):
my name is Tom David Frey. I'm half Swiss and half German and have lived in many fantastic places, from the United States to Israel. Somehow cool.
My age? Well, it rapidly changes. But you can surely do the math: I was born in 1992, somewhere in a small town in mid-Rhineland-Palatinate.
Now the relevant things you came here for: I have a strong passion for cameras and drones. I got my first Sony at the age of six and started my own business when I turned 18 (don't ever let people tell you that you will not succeed; Live your dreams!).
Nowadays, I'm shooting videos in many countries. I have private clients as well as major companies I'm working with, f.e. Netflix. And everyone knows that one, right?
But, more importantly, I love to fly and shoot (video) with my drones. I've flown in so many countries already (China, Switzerland, the USA, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Germany, and plenty more) and love to explore the world from above in all its beauty.
That's why my main business is all about drones. I capture the world from above. And I share my experiences, knowledge, and the best new inventions with you.
Drones and cameras excite me so much that I put a lot of time and hard work into creating my videos. And I love that you guys appreciate them!
Now, join me on my adventures and subscribe to my channel.
Stay tuned and fly safe!
--------------------
The fine print quickly summed up 💻
Some of the links above are so named "affiliate links". By using those, I can get a small provision for purchases you guys make. That way, I can stay true to you because I don't need companies to pay me for creating videos. I'm independent and loyal to you - the best audience!
Therefore, if you purchase your gear through my links, I can keep up the honest work. 👏
The videos on my channel are property of Tom David Frey. Duplicating and re-uploading them without a written permission is prohibited. Sorry, guys, but that's necessary. I work hard on my content and somehow need to make a living. Maybe instead share my videos, by spreading the link or embedding it to your websites or forums. But please, don't steal my work. 😎
By law, I have to mark my video as a "commercial." I herewith do so: this video is a commercial. Though I promise to be honest to you, my audience, all of the time. I like nothing less than fake reviews and videos that spread half-truths just for the financial gain of someone. I believe that being honest to you is much worthier in the long run than making quick money by spreading fake information. Truth rules! Don't believe me? I already had to give up on two promising cooperations because the companies found my videos to be too honest. I call that my occupational risk. 🦾

Great points, great tests. You really did you due diligence to create this video. I work in the printing industry and I can tell you the reason your colour test was off so much on both cameras is that all digital cameras have trouble reproducing ink pigments. Both cameras are probably better than they looked in terms of colour accuracy when filming natural colour scenes.

Thank you for putting this video together. It is very satisfying to have some definitive answers to some very technical questions in the public discussion. I liken these distinctions to those of food connoisseurs and deeply involved photo editors. Most consumers and even many professionals would probably never be able to tell the difference. Image quality at this level is all relatively fine over all. You did however settle many nagging esoteric questions that hard headed photo experts have brought up about DJI M2P vs P2P. Thanks again

Great review, I own and use both these drones. Your "best" settings found by technical methods match exactly what I have found to be the "best" settings found by trial and error, although I never go above ISO 100 on my Phantom 4 Pro V2. However, the IQ of the Mavic 2 Pro is still really good also. (In HQ mode). Love both these drones, and highly recommend them both. The dynamic range on both is also very good. I'm not a hardcore DJI fanboy in that I also fly Autel, but from a technical standpoint I got to call it like I sees it ha-ha.

Thanks for the hard work on this. I am curious how the two compare outside, also the MP2 in comparison to version 1. I mainly use my MP1 for photos, but don't like most photos against the sun. Is the M2P better on this? Also the flexible aperture should provide benefits? Furthermore when light disappears, I would expect there is a larger difference with the 1" sensors, isn't it? Thanks from Germany

Thanks so much for your hard work, Tom! Your thoroughness is very appreciated!! FWIW, I contacted DJI about the M2P barrel distortion and, in a nutshell, their answer was that the M2P simply does not have the onboard processing power (within a small foldable form factor) to finalize when shooting in DLog-M or HLG (10bit) color profiles. ...but it DOES correct/process more when on the standard color (8bit) setting...which I find still surprisingly good. Perhaps it would be interesting to compare the two drones both on 8bit standard color modes... as possibly the M2P is compromising maybe a bit too much to get that 10bit color. ...as well as to see if on the M2P alone if there are differences in sharpness between the 8bit in and 10bit color modes. It would be great to see where the M2P compromises and where it does not. Thanks again and Cheers! Joe NYC

Joe, I also wondered about that. So I shot about the same view in Normal Hlog and Dlog and honestly I found that, it was a very cloudy day with blue spots, the normal mode gave me the most detail within the white clouds -excellent dynamic range. But at the same time it is more difficult then to color correct. However the dlog is so flat, that you seem to do anything when faced with difficult lighting.

Aurora07 D-Log looks like it’s got so much more latitude for highlight and shadow- but apparently -at least for the Phantom series- it’s not possible to fully bring back your end points to true white or black. It crushes the ends of the histogram. D-Cinelike really improves your detail on both ends and allows us to bring the ends back to get the full use of the tonal range. That’s my understanding of it anyway.

Great comparison mate. I guess you need to ask yourself the question. Do you wan't something small to travel with or does size not matter to you. If size doesn't bother you then The P4P is your best option. But if you travel and want something that doesn't need a suitcase. Then the Mavic is for you. Either way, you can't go wrong with either of them. There are many videos from KZfaq travel vloggers using the Mavic now due to its ultra small size. And the footage is stunning. If you are a typical KZfaq viewer watching videos on a smartphone or a table. You wont be able to tell the difference. Watching on a 70 inch 4K BIG screen though, can reveal a different story. In that case the P4P comes out a winner in my opinion..

one correction, the Mavic 2 Pro doesn't actually have 14 stops of Dynamic Range. That's a marketing claim for the HDR mode. In normal mode it should be close or a little worse than the P4P. Good vid btw :)

Great test. I was surprised to see some of the results of the M2P, I thought it was a bit better than it showed in those tests. Still, since the P4P does processing, even in DLOG, it's not a fair comparison of the camera/lens capability on a couple of the tests. Either way, I'm glad I don't have the money right this moment to buy as I'd go crazy trying to pick one! I like the M2P for its compactness, stability in wind and it's better low light/night performance. I like the sharpness and quality of the P4P's camera for daylight shooting, and I also like the zoom capability of the M2Zoom. I guess what I want is a M2P with the M2Zoom's lens zoom capability and the P4P's daytime clarity and quality. Lol. I hope the new Mavic Pro comes out soon (maybe around the time the Phantom 5 comes out) and then we'll see.

Good effort. Although no one who is a little more technical and well researched wont use the dlog on p4pro. Its not technically feasible and should not be tested at all. Mavic 2 pros final result is underwhelming and its not debatable. Maybe you could do the same charts for photo as well? Interesting to see the raw result comparison at identcial settings.

Thanks for this very involved work, Tom. I have been trying to choose between either the Mavic 2 Pro, the Phantom 4 Pro + or waiting for Phantom 5. With no real indication of a release date for Phantom 5 in sight, yesterday, I chose to order Phantom 4 Pro +. Why? I wanted to get the best overall performer in this general category actually available now. I gave up 10 bit color, portability and the coolness factor of the Mavic 2 Pro because of the sensor cropping, distortion and slow implementation of promised features through firmware updates to date. Phantom 4 Pro is fully implemented and will, although with less color depth, require less post processing. Yes, i will probably regret purchasing yesterday if Phantom 5 comes out next week. Such is life.

in Australia we have a company called "office Works" you can get prints as large as that on a single sheet for around $40 Au. Approx 1.2 m x 0.9m. i think the sizes were called things like AO, B0 or something. anyway, I had a couple of lightning photographs that I had taken blown up. I was extremely satisfied with the price and quality. If I wanted a giant test card (which I may well do some day soon) I would get it printed at office works. I Tom, I love your work. I’m only half way through your video, but have noticed that you didn’t reframe the drone’s cameras, so that they cover the identical area. Hi Tom, as I said before, great technical comparison. Nice Job. Tom, a difficult question I suppose, but I own the P4p v1 and considered the M2p for a back-up to my P4p, do you think when you show up at a clients site the perception is there that the smaller drone M2p is not professional. There is a stigma that bigger is more professional like the Inspire 1 or 2. I have to explain the P4p is capable machine some of the times, I am little concern I would have to explain a lot for M2p. Would you invest in the M2p if you had the P4p or save a little more and get the Inspire 2 or wait for Phantom 5? I am leaning towards P5. The Inspire looks to be a nightmare to transport. I think I would like the portable size of the Mavic series. So torn on what to do......... What would you do?

I can't get past the horrible outlines on everything high contrast in the P4P footage. You can't get that out in post! Also... the DLOG-M profile is intentionally unsharpened. That's to avoid that extra noise and artifacts we see in the P4P. If you want to compare sharpness between the two, it needs to be done in the normal color profile. DLOG and DLOG-M are not the same. Either is an amazing drone and camera. Get the one that suits your needs best. Great video!

Thanks for posting this Tom - just been trying to decide which to go for (ok I really want both yeah ... ) :D. The P4P is really impressive but with the final sharpness there is still the problem of ghosting around contrasted edges which is nasty. I'd really like to see how the zoom compares too.

Lol. We know that right now M2P is not processing lens distortion in hw in dlog, while P4P does. If you are shooting in Dlog, post processing is mandatory so I don't get why applying an easy lens correction in post can pose any problem! Good job on color accuracy, and interesting result on the best aperture. Everyone on YT seems suggesting about F3.5 or F4

Digital sharpness was compared with - 3 2 + 3? What

I still think the P4P is the best drone on the market. I own the Inspire 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro. I wouldn't sell the P4P.

just want to say one thing after "studying, and using sony a7s II for couple of years. They all recomend to apply shaprness in POST, NOT in the camera :) I believe thats a generasl rule, and thats why all pro recomend to turn off sharpnes in cam, this is obvoiusly for us, that always grade footage :)

I'm always running +3 on the DJI and even increasing some sharpness in post makes it look nicer.

imo phantom on sharp setting 0 still uses digital sharpening and on -1 is the best

Could you be fixed with firmware on the mp2?
@LukeMaximoBell1

Probably actually, but I don't think DJI would ever do that. Unless the camera processor isn't as powerful as P4P.

Great review; but "clearly" there is not enough difference in image quality to consider lugging around a P4 type of drone again. For me the mavic 2 pro hit the mark.

I agree-if portability is the name of the game, I'd like to see Tom do a test of this type between the Mavic Pro original-and this.Although the new Pro2 has many other great new features ( more sensors, quieter props and a better radio as examples), which attract me to it.

I agree. More portable, better flight time, cheaper batteries, more sensors, more capable (hyperlapse etc), more flight range, more dynamic range, but most important... 10bit color is the future.

I prefer the phantom 4 pro. Sharper photos and more natural looking colors. I am not a mavic 2 pro fan.

I thought the same, when I first noticed. But he did explain why. Plus the P4P still beat the Mavic even with disadvantage.

Considering that you can now get the Phantom 4 Pro for much less than the Mavic 2 Pro, unless portability is a must, the P4 pro is a much better purchase. All comparison videos I have seen from well known youtubers basically show the same results!

Thanks for this review! Really great job. However this is only valid for filming in FOV. We photographers should REALLY go with the M2 because of the dynamic range and the color depth. All these reviews without that particular info witch I think is an important one.
