DJi Mavic Mini | Don't Buy Any Filters | Watch this First !
In this video we take a look at what filters work best for your Mavic Mini drone and what ones to avoid.
We use the Dji Mavic Mini to teach you how to use ND filters and show you the footage from the drone so you can see the difference between Using filters in Manual mode and Automatic mode.
This will be a great help for anyone who has never used filters before.

JUST TO CLARIFY THE POLARISATION FILTERS: In the video there has been some confusion over the filters I use. I am telling people not to buy "Dedicated" Polarisation filters. (not ND/PL filters) Buying a dedicated polarisation filter is like buying a watch that goes at the wrong speed. Ok, it may be right some of the time, and may even be beneficial some of the time. especially if you know the speed at which the watch spins. But for 99% of people, its pointless. Dedicated polarisation filters, for most people, don't have the desired effect they want as they don't plan their drone flight routes or rotate the filter to compensate for the glare. Thus you have no control of the reduction in glare you will receive, from the filter. You might as well piss in the wind and hope for the best. Anyway, back to the filters I use, the ND/PL filters. I got these off eBay, cheaper than a normal set of ND filters- thus the Polarisation part of the filters is kind of useless, unless I really plan my drones flight route and sun angle. Basically its uncontrollable. Hope that makes sense.

Why do you think that the PL filters are useless if you can only set them before the flight? That it only partly true for getting the most attenuation of the blue sky as the axes of polarization does depend on the way the camera is pointed relative to the Sun. On the other hand, if you are interested in attenuating specular reflections on the ground (what you have shown in your video), there is only one optimal way to rotate the filter (perpendicular to the ground). That orientation will give you the best possible result, regardless of the gimbal angle or the Sun position. Another advantage of the PL filter is that it will also (regardless of the orientation) kill a part of a random specular reflections from the foliage, thus giving you a greener, more saturated color. This is true for the same reason that the PL sunglasses are not useless (you can cover most reflections with only one filter orientation).

I use CPL filters all the time with my drone & always have. You'll never had an issue if you know what position it's in & what your subject is. It's not too hard to pre-plan a shoot (video or photo), and adjust it correctly before taking off. Just knowing to shoot in a particular direction perpendicular to the sun is easy, and takes 5 min to land & re-adjust to set up for another shot.

UV agreed, PL however, I'm sorry - for stills I always use one to bring out detail in the sky. Agreed you can't adjust it in flight but more often than not I get a good enough result if I just point the camera at the sky and rotate it to bring out the clouds etc before flying. ND for long exposure stills and video only.

I received the FreeWell all day pack which does Include ND circular polarizing filters and although it makes complete sense why they are not needed; in my experience I have found them useful. I do use the ND filters that came with the Mavic Air 2 Combo and the ones in “All Day” pack; but have found increased colour saturation when I adjust the filter roughly towards the path I am planning to fly to take shots or footage. I also prefer some light reflecting off of lakes. Again depends upon what effect a person is after. Don’t get me wrong great video and very well explained. Just wanted to make a couple of small points.

I enjoyed your video and recommendations about filters for my Mini 2. However... The polarization of my sun glasses are not rotatable either but they generally do a pretty good job of reducing glare. I'm sure that it would be nice to be able to rotate a filter while flying. But I'm thinking that the 'fixed' polarizing would still darken sky and make colors snap as my sunglasses do.

Been flying fpv for over 10 years and I can say without a doubt so far that regarding the polarizing filter that is absolutely incorrect as when you install the polarizing filter on a camera with a gimbal up is always up down is always down this does not change you do not need to spend the filter you simply attach it and it will always separate the light into digestible wavelengths for the digital camera, plus many more benefits only 3 minutes in and had to say that, and I recommend getting an ND filter set and using accordingly but don't worry about needing to spin the filter as the polarization will always stay the same way on a gimbal camera that does not have a spinning lens

My background in photography with SLR/DSLR and medium format over many years immediately had me suspicious seeing PL filters advertised after I bought my Mavic Mjni. How on earth could you get them to work correctly?! I agree with the UV filters. They’re only even been useful as lens protectors (like when I was in sandy, gritty conditions travelling in Africa) and unless the UV filter is excellent quality, it’s only going to degrade your image by putting an extra bit of glass between the sensor and the subject, as you said. Thanks for raising these things for those new to drone photography as other KZfaq channels aren’t discussing those points. BTW I have the same Skyreat filters and now the shutter speed can be set with the latest firmware update, they do the job.

Ok first of all. Polarizing filtrers can be very helpfull if you are recording some sunset over the sea. Since there is no more reflections, its easier to focus on having a great image. Next, ND filters DO NOT get your footage to look that much better. In fact, its just making sure that we can bump down the shutter speed so we can have that ''movement effect'' while performing a travelling or any other camera movement, only visible if there is objects near the drone. I do not recommend using it for photography what so ever. Finally, the mavic mini has a Exposure lock feature. So you can keep your auto mode and it will not change gradually. I still prefer to keep it in Manual mode for better controls. Just wanted to make clear those things if you dont want to buy filtrers.

However I did notice some pretty dramatic differences in the glare of the water while I was filming a waterfall, so they definitely do the job. Polarizing filter seem to make perfect sense with a drone. Gimbal keeps a perfect horizon level. Most reflecting surfaces are horizontal, when filming from air, making reflected light polirized strictly vertical. Thus a CPL filter can be set once. I am about to get into drones and was wondering about ND filters. The brand you mention are reasonably priced but what’s the color cast like when you use them? I have used a cheap ND filter before on a DSLR and not been impressed.

They seem pretty good with the colour cast. I have a video on the variable polar pro Nd filter set, which give a green tint. But I have no issue with these ones.

I dont agree on polfilters. You can still use them to "darken the sky" aaand if you understand how they work you can predict and prepare them before take off. Ohhh and also ocean xD.

while I may agree in principle . . .in photography I use the UV filter to protect my lens and that alone is really valuable - keep in touch anyway - Mauro

Thanks for this; what it did show me is that Skyreat is decent and comparable to Freewell, practically speaking. At half the price, I had to see for myself. Thanks!

Tracking on the Mini would be super, but at that point it's getting too close to the Air 2. At half the price, the Mini would hurt Air 2 sales I think (my speculation on DJI's strategy)

hi. What nd filters are good for sunny days? Are Nd 8/16 good for that? All filters for bright days from freewel and skytreat comes with PL . Thanks
@MauroTandoi
@MauroTandoi 3 жыл бұрын
The mini2 has a fixed aperture of 2.8, so I would say ND16. On mavic2pro I always use ND16, and on a sunny day, they always get an aperture between 4 and 5.6. So I would say for a mini2, the ND16 is the most appropriate.

Emm, good luck. You could try a polarising filter but It wont be controllable like you think, it may reduce some of the glare, but how much and when is really going to be hit and miss. You will probably get just as good results from rotating the drone away from the sun and trying different angles with the camera. Let me know how u get on!

I just got a DJI Mini 2 a week ago and a few days ago I went to go look for sea lions but I couldn't get any pictures because they would pop out of the water and then swim under again and I'd lose them. Do you think a polarizing lens would allow me to see them under water? I think it would be worth tampering with it for a bit if it would allow me to get to cool shots of sea life
@TheCameraManReviews
@TheCameraManReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I would highly doubt it. You may get the odd lucky shot, but nothing that could be controlled or 100%.
