great break down. I'm trying out some preprocessing on audio doing it in obs first (I have reasons) but exact same variables apply there as well. I setup compressor, EQ for treble and bass and sounds fantastic

man I just spent several hours watching DJI & Rode mic videos, and I love the way you do things more than all the others I saw. I've really been going back and forth and almost went for cheaper DJI 1 after much deliberation because of out-of-box sound quality (for most of the time when I want to use it as my live zoom/discord mic or just instantly upload whatever I record, instead of EQing which I'm learning about), but the clarification you added at the end of this video just solidified I'm going with 2. Thank you very much.

I tried using the DJI mic on my iphone and it sounds horribly muffled. These settings didn't help at all unfortunately, I have no idea why the mic sounds so bad and muffled :/

Haven't got to EQ but I think out of the box with Low Cut turn off it sounds better than when on. But barely noticeable. On the other hand the Noise cancelling is another factor which RODE Pro doesn't have. Lastly haven't tried the new DJI Lav mic. Heard it sounds better too.

which software were u using to adjust the mic? i'm really confused if we are changing the actual quality of the mic when speaking into it or we're changing the quality afterwards in the editing software. so for example if i stream trough my phone using the mic, or record a video, will it sound that good or is that only when u put the clips into an editing software?

Ill try to explain. The DJI Mic and most quality audio products record in a "flat" or "neutral" response so that it can work with ALL different types of peoples voices (men, women, deep, high, squeaky etc etc) It's our job to tweak the audio in "post" via an editing program to get the desired sound. That's how professional audio equipment works, just like a RAW photo or a LOG Profile video. SO in short the good sound is always there you just need to polish it up. Also im usine adobe premier but these setting would be similar in other major software.

To thumbs up for honesty about the low cut filter being on :D It’s slightly annoying that it turns on by default when doing a factory reset, and items on when the device is new and taken out of the box.

Thanks for this Fredo. Have you had the chance to try out the MIc 2 with the new DJI lavalier mic? I noticed that with the lav mic the mic 2 sounds a bit brightener. I also tried the Rode Lavalier Go, and the DJI lav sounded better to my ears. I'm not an audiophile, so I could be wrong but so far I am liking the Mic 2 with the lav. I also own the Rode Wireless Go Mic I & II, btw. I know people are having doubts about the Mic 2, but I want to give DJI a chance. They offer so much convenience and connecting them to the Pocket 3 or the Action 4 without a receiver is a win for me, not to mention the 32 bit float. The other day I connected my Korg keyboard to the Mic 2 and with some EQ in Logic, the 32 bit float file wasn't bad for a quick recording without mixers, extra cables etc. I have faith in this tiny Mic.

How much better does the Lav sound vs the internal mic? I just got the mic 2 and was pretty disappointed in the sound but I also ordered the Lav so I’m hoping it makes it sound a lot better.

@@Tanner_Teves after some testing I still add eq with the lav mic. The lav seems to help a bit vs without. I hope DJI can brings us a firmware to make it sound better. But for now, out of the box will still sound muddy but some EQ helps.

I’d have to give them all another listen to be fair and impartial. Rode and Hollyand both did an amazing jobs with their products. The real “decider” is 32bit float and form factor. For my application it’s DJI, maybe for more serious “professional” the time code and locking lav I respect both use case and recommend you go with the system with more Pros than Cons for your use case.

A little confused about the 32bit float..is it for both the receiver into the camera audio and the transmitter or is it either or? Not sure if it’s on the camera, the transmitter, or both?

Simple. 32 bit float is only on the internal recording of the transmitter (DJI Mic 2) device. I pump audio into my camera via the receiver BUT also record a backup track w/ 32bit on the Mic itself, just to be safe.

You want to turn off the low pass filter. Low pass filter just gets rid of “low” frequencies like fan or rumbles or just “General Electric” noise but depending on your voice it can “muddy” the sound. It’s always better to have RAW audio and tweak in post.

Finally something useful, thanks!! I've watched a ton of side-by-side reviews out of the box and the DJI Mic 2 sounds significantly worse than the now cheaper DJI Mic 1, which would be a big problem and disappointment, but I mean I wouldn't expect my $3k camera to work perfectly out of the box. I always process my audio and nobody else has answered whether the data is there to process it into sounding good. Low cut filter off, EQ applied (which I'll create once and save as a preset), and it sounds great. Might be nice to see DJI release a firmware update with some EQ settings for those who want a flatter sound or something that's more ready out of the box, but I feel a lot more confident to buy this knowing that it can be easily adjusted to my space and voice

What you are perceiving as “loud” are the EQ settings highlight my vocally frequency. The clips are essentially at the same level

Great content. This mic has been a real hassle for me to dial in with or without the lav for a our podcast. Definitely going to try the EQ setting but during our filming theres a lot of times where we are screaming and even with the mic at -10 and the receiver at -10 and the camera at 2-3 (which is weird because the audio quality seems to drop) it STILL peaks and causes a horrible popping sensation. Going to try the 32 bit float but I am almost certain its going to be annoying as hell for me, where the DJI peaking was a more bearable bad sound 🤣

I watched your video, great content. I did hear the popping sound you're speaking about, might be because you're both so close to each other and made a loud sound. Could be some kind interference, I would try recording in mono mode vs stereo, also curious if you have low cute filter enabled and noise canceling.

@@Fredo.heavyy It would be low cut on, low cut off, noise cancellation on, noise cancellation off, 32 bit float on vs. off. It was all the time. I ended up having to return them because I had tried every single setting. I didn't, however, try stereo. While filming our podcast outdoors I used the lav and had each mic recording seperately, but I am not a wizard on resolve with the audio editing (to be honest I couldn't get to the audio settings screen you were on which makes me think it was premier.)

hey great video. mic 2 sounded great after you "fixed" it. sadly, i dont have the knowledge nor the software to do what you just did. i do play around and experiment with the mic 2's audio thru an old filmora editing software. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. i still believe the rode wireless pro sounds better with minimal processing. but dji is a lot easier to work with given my current filming set up. still, thanks for doing this video. an eye-opener to say the least.

ok so im really happy that the noise cancel button can be disabled ! .. but this is what I dont get ... this tx is small , so most men have banana hands and holding the tx to put in their pocket , its easy to hold the power button and turn it off including recording ! .. how is this possible ??? surely all they had to do was a disable all tx buttons via rx !! its just so frustrating ,,,.. please can everyone message dji ? all we want is a hold option like the zoom h1 which is ancient !

your voice has a lot of sibilance. the problem is that your trying to fix your voice on already expensive product. for something 349 you shouldn't be playing around with EQ trying to make it sound good. Rode Wireless Pro sounds amazing out of the box with a lot of extra features that dji doesnt provide for the price point. Unless dji has an software update I will be returning it.

Did you watch to the end of the video? You might have missed something more important than “sibilance” You should be able to play around with any content (audio/video) that’s the creativity component and is probably true irregardless of price. Do you think the EQ improved the audio? What system you rocking with rn? Appreciate the comment

@@Philomathethere’s are so many problems with the dji mic 2. Why should I be stuck with a broken product? I bought the lav and spent over 420 dollars. My time is valuable. I have to have turnover or else I lose clients. And if I can’t use it for professional purposes then what’s the point? I am not the only one concerned there are more established channels that are saying the same thing. You might not value your work but I do and my clients do. Advertising false information is not the right move.
