The DJI Pocket 2 anamorphic lens and wide-angle lens from Freewell are what I've been dying to get since they came out. Freewell kindly sent the combo over to me in which you get the wide-angle lens, the anamorphic lens, and four individual ND filters that snap onto the back of the lenses. You can also buy each lens individually and you'll get the ND filters as well. In this video, I try them out and see how the footage looks.
Spoiler alert: I think they're great! In particular, being able to use a wide-angle lens on the DJI Pocket 2 with ND filters - just brilliant!
Though Freewell sent me the anamorphic lens, wide-angle lens, and ND filters I didn't receive any payment to make this video.

100% agree. I use mine all the time to film my little girl as I can't always take my camera and my gimbal when we go out, and often don't necessarily want to as it's too much faff when also wanting to play with her and whatnot, so the Pocket 2 is a great alternative. And also for vlogging.

Quite unrelated to this one, it would be awesome if you were to show some behind the scenes when shooting with the pocket 2. Just watched the 4k footage at 30fps, and as someone looking to do a bit of shooting myself, I found myself curious to see how you shifted views, what you cut out etc, to get to that final version. Would also be cool to see a vid about some basics of getting started...especially with the pocket 2. I'm getting mine in a week and I know nada. But even if you don't get time to do all this, you still have cool stuff on your channel, so thanks for all that.

Thanks for the comparison. I already own the wide angle filters and I think I might pass on the anamorphic filter. I would struggle to find an instance where this would work for my workflow. After correcting the aspect ratio in post I would need to crop in to remove the bars. Since the 1/1.7” CMOS sensor already has a hard time in low light I feel like it would be too noisy to match my A73 footage.
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's fair enough. I quite like the black bars so for me it's ok. I only use my Pocket 2 for vlogging so I'll most likely use the anamorphic lens in that instance, so my a7 III is still my main camera for actual productions and client shoots. It has made me consider getting an anamorphic lens for the a7 III though.

Subbing Tamara, good channel, nice to see the night demos too as I am almost always out at night after work and if not summer light levels suck. Awesome! I love them, I use them all the time. The Pocket 2 is just brilliant as well. If it makes you feel any better, I often leave my a7s III at home in favour of the compactness of the P2 because the quality is so good, so I mainly use the a7s III when shooting my videos indoors or doing client work. Hope you start to feel much better soon. And thanks for subbing too 😊

@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK Жыл бұрын
The higher the number the denser the filter, so you’ll want to use the ND16 or ND32 when it’s a really bright day (depends how strong the sun is) and then ND4 or ND8 when it’s overcast and dull.

Looking at the wide angle footage vs the anamorphic footage it seems like the horizontal fov angle is pretty much the same. Is this what you are seeing? The other question I had was do you notice additional detail in objects if you zoom in (in the editor not with the camera)? I film my youth soccer team and additional definition of the players at distance would be very helpful. Thank you for any thoughts!
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they're pretty much the same in terms of horizontal fov. In terms of zooming in the editor, I wouldn't say you can see additional detail, it just gets a bit blurrier as digital zoom loses a bit of quality.

Hey Barry. I was pretty impressed with the Freewell ones, the image didn't seem any less sharp using the anamorphic lens than not, the only thing I noticed was that there was a bit of a warm colour cast, but nothing horrendous that you couldn't alter in post if you wanted to.

Hey Andrew, thanks so much ☺️ Haha, being bigger than PM, that's doubtful 😆 But I guess we all start somewhere! I could do an interiors one, sure. Do you mean in terms of using the anamorphic lens indoors in small spaces vs being outdoors?
@andrewjditton

@@TamaraGabrielUK Thanks for the reply Tamara. I meant the anamorphic lens compared to the regular DJI wide angled lens in small spaces, to see if it’s worth cheapskates like me investing in one. I got my Pocket 2 to do caravan and motorhome interior tours, so this comparison would be useful. Thanks a lot! 😁

I prefer the one with the anamorphic lens and ND32 filter. I bought the same filters for about $100. They are out of stock almost everywhere. I was lucky to find them on amazon before they disappeared lol!!! Btw which settings usually you use when you put a filter on? Also I tried the anamorphic and the blue glare was not like in your video. Perhaps I gotta try them more with better lighting. Just got them today

Yeah, they've become really popular, they're such great lenses and filters. With the anamorphic lens it's gonna depend a lot on the light source whether you get the blue line and how the blue line looks. In terms of camera settings, in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prJlpKh_tODIpaM.html I do mention about setting your camera up to shoot with manual exposure when using NDs, have a look at the description for the specific chapter as you can jump straight to that bit of the video, but within the next week I'll be putting out a video going through this in more detail 😊

Tamara Gabriel thank you so much for your tips. I was sure that the blue glare is depending a lot from the light source. Im new with the pocket 2 and...I would like to learn everything rightaway! Lol!!! But it’s not possible!! It takes a bit of time to get used to it. I also noticed that slow moves help a lot getting a cinematic footage.

Haha, I know the feeling - when I get a new piece of gear I want to know everything NOW 😂 But yeah, for sure, slow movement is the way to go for cinematic shots.

Tamara Gabriel exactly!! Honestly I’m driving myself crazy!!! Ahahah! Watching all the tutorials I can!! Lol! I took some footage around NYC some are good and some not! I’ve decided to leave the AUTO setting on PRO. Cause im sure it will come well. But now with filters I wanna switch on manual.

@TamaraGabrielUK

You have to bring the highlights down if they're recoverable, but sometimes if it's a really bright day, it's just not possible. In this particular video though, it was an overcast day so the sky isn't really blown out as such.

for my taste I prefer the non-anamorphic but I do like how it looks like a music video, as well as it seems like the anamorphic is less grainy in low light? definitely fun to play with both!

Yeah the anamorphic lens is definitely a subjective look. Using the Freewell wide angle lens is so useful for the NDs.

Freewell could have made this the ULTIMATE kit by including just a blank lense in addition to the anamorphic and wide angle. This would have allowed the user to use the ND filters without the wide angle or anamorphic effect.

@@TamaraGabrielUK I know, but it is just another added expense to buy more ND filters that I already have with the kit. I am just wondering though, could I just film all the time with one of these lenses and never film as is straight out of the camera? Like, are there times that is makes sense to film with just the camera and other times when it makes sense to use the lenses?

I shoot in AUTO mode (4k 60fps), and I'm not interested in changing the motion (to get the 'cinematic blur'), I just want to get not-too-bright footage in a very sunny day. I guess using a filter while filming in AUTO doesn't make sense, then? if so, my only option would be getting in PRO mode and lower the EV? (and letting all the rest in AUTO). You can check a video I took last week, in a very sunny day: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8xyp9CW1rjelJ8.html (in the last 15 seconds you can see everyone is so white!) and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKtyqsaTspvSmX0.html (at 00:40 you can see them so white as well)

@@TamaraGabrielUK thanks! how about CPL filter? would that work to darker the footage? (in AUTO)
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 2 жыл бұрын
CPLs reduce glare and give a better contrast look. If you want to control your exposure yourself, using manual exposure is the way.

Why would anyone want a lens or filter that requires post-production manipulations so that it looks "normal"?
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 2 жыл бұрын
It's just because of the certain look an anamorphic lens gives over a regular lens. The "normal" look is just about desqueezing the image because of how an anamorphic lens captures the frame, but you still get the look of an anamorphic lens over a regular lens.

@@TamaraGabrielUK I get that, but I don't want to waste a bunch of time on a PC just to make the recording viewable. It's different sitting in front of a PC when you are playing with bits and pieces of footage (btw, what do you call it now?) to make an infomercial... or to sell something. I want to be able to record to whatever conditions are present and then use the recording as is. Here's an example, remember that this is on a Hero 4 Black in a Sennheiser mic case. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN6Bo9WgyNzDgp8.html The Pocket 2 with a 4th axis gimble is going to get some good shots, I just have to figure out the best setting. I really like and appreciate the video. Very informative. Haven't heard about this lens kit, but I'm glad I have now. But please DON'T FEED BREAD TO THE DUCKS. It's very unhealthy for them. Their digestive system isn't made to process white flour products like ours are. They can get sick and even die.
