DJI Pocket 2 ND FIlters: How to use ND filters for shooting video with the DJI Osmo Pocket and DJI Pocket 2
You can use ND filters for the DJI Osmo Pocket and DJI Pocket 2! The good news too is if you have filters for the DJI Osmo Pocket, you can also use them with the new DJI Pocket too! The gimbal head and lens is the same size for both versions.
Because of this, I highlight the ND Filters for the DJI Osmo Pocket and the new DJI Pocket 2.
ND Filters are pretty much like sunglasses for your cameras. Since the DJI Pocket cameras have a fixed aperture (the hole which lets light in from the lens to the sensor), you can't stop down or close down the lens opening when shooting or filming in bright light.
In order to help with that, you can use ND filters to avoid overblown bright areas in video, and to film with a more natural look of motion. This is also how to film or shoot cinematic video.
Here are the simple guidelines I mention in this video:
ND 4 - Overcast, Cloudy Skies
ND 8 - Partly Cloudy, Some sun between clouds
ND16 - Partly Cloudy but mostly sunny
ND 32 - Sunny and Clear.
These are good starting guidelines if you are new to shooting video, and are shooting with the DJI Osmo Pocket or Pocket 2 on Automatic. If you are shooting on manual, these are great guidelines for your conditions outdoors, where you can fine tune your adjustments in camera.

Just wondering if it’s worth buying the pack in terms of actually using them all. So I guess I am wondering if you were to purchase the most common used ‘that u use’ which would it be. @@bgovan64 Buy a pack that has ND 4, 8, 16, and 32 for a start. I have the All Day set for the Osmo Action, and it's great for that camera. For the DJI Osmo Pocket and Pocket 2, these are less expensive, and very similar to the all day kit. I have this one too: amzn.to/3zgDQ2y. Since the lens is really small, you'll still have the polarizers, and additional ND64, and you'll spend less!

Yes, Lawrence! As long as you can set shutter speed and frame rates for video, you can shoot cinematic looking video. If you’re outside in bright light, that’s when the ND filters come in so you can film with a lower F-stop to achieve the bokeh or depth of field you want.

I filmed a few clips for KZfaq Shorts and for Instagram Reels. To get full resolution, you have to flip the Pocket sideways to film portrait. You'll still get stabilization, but just realize the functions change because the Pan/Tilt/Roll axis are changed. Play with it if stabilization is important. Another way is to film 4k/2k in normal mode, and frame your composition so that you can crop vertically in post without losing the framing of your subject. Since most Shorts/Reels/TikTok videos are downsized to 1080p vertical, you'll still maintain good resolution on that mobile format either way.

Chuck very nice and great video.needed this for sure.i have one question,i shoot manually, iso 100,60fps,120th shutter.im stuck with foxus APS or APC,what do you recommend and when using the nd filter lets say nd16,should i lock tge exposure or leave it as it is?

Generally, for focus modes, if you are following something, AFS (Autofocus Singular). This mode is for following a moving object, or if you are moving and trying to maintain focus on one thing. AFC, autofocus continuous is for general scenes, like filming an area and panning. There will be continuous focus on most of the scene and not one particular point as the gimbal moves. When you use the ND filters, you may want to just lock ISO and change the filters according to the conditions (i.e. cloudy/sunny, etc.).

Hi Kevin! ND Filters work best as a filterin bright light and helps to increase contrast of your photos.. Remember the exposure triad for photography: ISO, Aperture, ShutterSpeed. The best and base ISO on a small camera like the Pocket 2 is ISO 100. You are at a fixed Aperture at f2.8 (You can't change it), and shutter speed can vary depending on the lighting conditions. So, in bright daylight, using the guidelines with ND Filters, you can set ISO at 100 and set shutter speed in Auto and see how that works. If still too bright, you can change the filters to get the image you like. Try it, and Thanks for watching!

Make sure you have the latest firmware installed via the Mimo app. The indicator is simply telling you you have a magnetic accessory attached to the lens. When I add the wide angle lens it tells me so, and when I add the ND filter it says so too. Perhaps it’s your firmware? Otherwise, if the camera is filming correctly, it should be no big deal. Hey there, thank you for the knowledge Just got my pocket 2 Got a question, are the ND filters stuck to the lens tightly (does it come off easily when you walk when recording)? And when you record the video outdoor and under the shade, did you set the settings to auto exposure?

The ND filters are small and magnetic. They’re strong enough to stay on! And yes, if you record going into and out of shade you can use variable ISO settings, but you may not always get great results if you’re using ND32 or 64. Plan the way you film to avoid that. The best vloggers plan their shots to avoid exposure issues and rolling shutter, even with the best cameras. Thanks for watching!

As long as you're in outside light, no shade, the following will work at ISO 100-200. I mention this in the video. Ducking in the shade as you vlog will not work too well since the NDs will filter light, so planning your filming scenes even as you vlog is important. Although vlogs are not scripted, you need to plan how you intend to film and for the camera to get a great video image. ND 4 - Overcast, Cloudy Skies ND 8 - Partly Cloudy, Some sun between clouds ND16 - Partly Cloudy but mostly sunny ND 32 - Sunny and Clear.

Hi Chuck, great video.. can I ask a couple of questions.. 1. When you are at the outdoor field, you state an ND64, yet the DJI kit doesn't contain a ND64.. were you using the DJI ND32 or another product ND64 and if so what manufacturer? 2. Hi Charlie and Shell! There are the two kits I have with ND64. Freewell Bright Day Kit: geni.us/DXIfv and Freewell Wide Angle Lens with ND Filter : geni.us/WVi2Ojc. The wide angle lens with ND is great because it has the ND64 and it comes with the wide angle lens adapter too. I only use the ND64 in really bright conditions, but in most cases, I do well with the ND32. Also, yes…I film with auto white balance and do minor corrections in my editing program. I don’t like to do major color correction so auto works well for most of my filming situations. Hope this helps...and thanks for watching!

It depends! What are trying to film? Just general scenery/city life, or are you doing long time lapses of night sky? There are several for different night modes.

@@Joe-mk2yq If that’s the case, you wouldn’t need one at night unless you’re in a really brightly lit city area and the ND4 may help with night time glare. There are some night filters, but those are generally for long exposure photos or extended time lapses with some ambient city lights reflecting into the night sky.

Much better explaining the rule of thumb for making "cinematic video" :D Trick question :D Are there filters that are compatible with both the DJI Pocket and the DJI Mavic Mini 2 drone? :D The cameras seem to be very similar, but when I look up filters for the drone, they all have a fixation on the back instead of the magnet clip. I am looking to by a set, and would be wasteful if it does not work on both - the sensor seems to be very identical :D

When at a retail store, I was trying to compare the filters and a drone user told me they’re very different because they’re made specifically for the lenses of the drone or the pocket 2. I believe because of the movements and vibrations of the drones, they also mount differently. Thanks for watching!

Hi there. Nice video. Honest question. Let's say I'm off from "perfect" EV by lets say +/- 0.3, is it okay to skip shutter to lets say 1/50, or better keep it at 1/60 and accept?

Hi Magnus. If you want to stay with the cinematic rule for motion blur and you're at 24fps and1/50 shutter or 30fps and 1/60 shutter, +/-0.3 is not a great variance to exposure. If it was several stops variance, you could also make adjustments to ISO or by adding light. I did a shot outside and I had a small variance in exposure after adding an ND8, but the shot still looked good because it was about +0.5.

Thanks, I'm going to test these settings. Do you have any tips for regulating the colours. For example, I am walking in a forest area and some areas are bright, but sometimes the trees cast a shadow and my video becomes too dark. Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to deal with it. (I do have an adjustable NDFilter, but maybe just knowing some more info can help me. Thanks!

Hey RFS! If you are filming in a variable situation like this and want to keep with the cinematic 360 degree shutter rule, you might want to just film without the ND filters and use a variable ISO setting of 100-400 ISO max. ND filters in the shaded areas will make the shadow/darker area range too dark, and the variable ISO with 400 max may give you the results you desire in and out of the sunny areas. If you are solely filming in brighter light, then that's where you'll need the appropriate ND filters.

Just have a question regarding your camera settings at the pickle ball court. Were you in automatic exposure, or did you maintain the 100 ISO with 1/60 at 30 FPS?

Yes. Manual ISO 100, 1/60, 30 FPS. This was a bright day, and as you can see, the use of the ND helped increase contrast of the bright areas behind me. Try it out and practice!

Great video. Question though😂. I want to vlog while traveling around cities, my worry with pro is as im going in and out of shops restaurants etc then back on the street. Should i still use pro mode and if so should i set the auto iso to 800 for example? What would your advice be (i do have nd filters) Your videos have been a great help thanks

Use ND filters according to your outside conditions. If you are filming in bright conditions, they work well. If you're going inside, you'll not need ND filters. Also, if you watch most vlogs, despite seeming spontaneous, the ones with the best filming are planned or edited well. If you're inside, you set your camera for inside conditions and film. If you're outside, you'll set your camera for outside conditions. This is often not seen due to great edits and planning of shots. If you watch the run and gun type of vlogging, the quality is not always the best, and can sometimes be unwatchable. The best vloggers make use of b-roll and transitions for the changing conditions between shots.

What would be your ISO recommendations in combination with the ND filters? In PRO, just constrain it to an upper limit of max 800 or something or manually set it too 100?

If you're in bright light, 800 ISO is way too high/sensitive. When outside with ND filters, I leave ISO at 100 for two reasons: it's most likely the base ISO for this device, and you don't need more sensitivity than that unless you're in a dark condition. Remember too, the higher the ISO on small sensors, the more likely you'll introduce noise/grainy pixels.

When turning camera off with the filter attached, original or third party. Would you know what happens? Is the camera lens turned inwards protecting the lens as if there is no filter on, or is it left exposed as if using the wide angle lens? I usually turn the camera off between filming, and of course would prefer if the lens went in to the protective mode. I have my eyes on the Polar Pro, but maybe they are all behaving the same.

The lens turns inward like the Osmo pocket, and most of the instructions recommend taking off the bulky wide angle lenses. The gimbal may flick it off as it turns off. I’ve forgotten a thinner ND filter on the Pocket 2 and it didn’t cause problems or fly off with the camera going into storage mode. I remove all magnetic lenses before shut off so they don’t get lost.

How do you control exposure shifts? New to filters and Pocket 2. Ill think the exposure is good in direct sunlight but then when I transition to shade, I appear underexposed.

Hi Adrienne! Keeping your frame rate/shutter settings the same, all you might need to do is change ISO in Pro settings. Make sure you chose M on the right for Manual, and try AutoMax 400. That way the ISO will stay low in bright sunny conditions, and when you duck into shade, it can auto adjust up to AutoMax 400. AutoMax 800 may be a bit grainy, but you can push it that far if you need to.

I wonder what can you do if you are walking trough a forest, on a cloudy day, or a sunny day and you got parts with no trees covering the sky. If you want not to stop the video to change the filters it would be difficult.

Hi Luciernaga! This is where you carefully plan how you film. With ND filters, you generally use them in brighter conditions. So this is where you decide whether or not to just film in automatic modes to compensate for changing exposure situations. The other option is to film creatively with the edits in mind where your transitions and edits allow for the time you would need to add the ND filters and adjust for proper exposure.

Shooting outdoors for a while, most of the time I’m in an area of “standard” exposure, and sometimes part of the shot is overexposed like the sky. Would it be okay to leave the ND filter in all the time? This wouldn’t underexpose or at least affect the exposure of most of the shots?

This may underexpose your darker areas, and even areas of good exposure. What you might try is a lower grade for the ND (ie instead of ND 16, try ND 8) to bring down exposure of sky. The best part is you can try and see what works for your situation. Hope this helps!

Is there much of an optical difference between the Freewell Budget ND Kit and the "All Day" version ?

I have used the budget ones and find no real difference other than the materials of the frames for the glass. The glass may be different but the budget seems to do the job for less money.

Hi Crash! The All Day kit has more filters and better grade of glass. I have the budget and it has worked well for the Osmo Pocket. It should be the same for the Pocket 2, unless you’re into picking apart images and pixel peeping! (G). Thanks for watching!

Yes they do! While the gimbal head on the Pocket 2 is slightly larger, the lens and magnetic contacts are the same size. Filters for the Osmo Pocket will work for Pocket 2 and vice versa.

Do you know how to disable creating LRF files on DJI osmo pocket 2 ? I don’t need them.

Unfortunately, DJI says no in their forums. The LRF files are low-resolution files used for playback on the device screens or on mobile screens for their app. Some have used these externally as proxy files for editing on DaVinci Resolve. As with best practices, once you’re finished with your project, they’re removed when you format your card for your next project.

Since you’re outside and filtering light, the lowest: 100. Anything more sensitive defeats the purpose of filtering bright light. Thanks for watching!

DJI filters don’t alter the focal length of the Osmo Pocket or Pocket 2. They simply go over the Pocket Gimbal’s lens, so it’s whichever focal length of the Osmo Pocket is or the Pocket 2 is.

idk 180 degree nd vs automatic smae more or less, wonder in nature footage though. I think for regular viewers they can't tell much of a difference

True, but I've done some panning and other movements in bright light without ND filters, and the Pocket filmed at very high frame rates. When I edited the video in a 24 or 30 FPS timeline, it resulted in dropped frames and some jittery motion. Your results may vary, so try it out without the NDs for your needs.

I’m clearly challenged by the nd filter story🤪. What settings is one to use when one, say comes from an indoor to outdoor setting. I have set my frames/second to 25, shutter speed to 1/50, clear sunny day, nd 32, and it’s just not happening for me😕. Clearly I’m doing something wrong?

Hi Petra! You've got it right with the FPS and shutter, but you can also go 30FPS and 1/60 shutter. I use this for transitioning to outdoor shots and I set ISO to Automax 800. This sets it to an auto ISO setting with a max of 800 which is good for indoor exposure with the least grain. Now with using ND, I plan my shots so I can put the ND filter on for outdoors. This will also help white balance too since you don't want shifts in color from outdoor light to indoor light, and you have the opportunity to put that ND filter on for better motion and light control. Play with it, but plan your shots is best because moving indoors and outdoors can cause exposure and color balance issues for. your shots and viewer experience.

DJI and filter makers suggests you remove magnetic filters or wide angle lenses when powering off the Pocket and Pocket 2. When the gimbal calibrates at power on and when it powers down. They may get in the way of the power on/power off movements and can get removed/flicked off from the gimbal head. If the filter or lens is too large, it could also get stuck and harm the the motors too. Put the filters on after powering on, and take them off after filming before powering down.

I shoot in AUTO mode (4k 60fps), and I'm not interested in changing the motion (to get the 'cinematic blur'), I just want to get not-too-bright footage in a very sunny day. I guess using a filter while filming in AUTO doesn't make sense, then? if so, my only option would be getting in PRO mode and lower the EV? (and letting all the rest in AUTO). If you're not interested in getting smoother looking motion, then no filter would be your option. Just set to 4k 60, and exposure to auto. If you're able to adjust ev values, PRO mode give you more options for exposure and even variable ISO. Play with it and see how it works for you. ND filters are an option, and will avoid over exposure since the aperture on the DJI Pocket 2 is fixed. If it wasn't you'd have another option to avoid over-exposure. I use ND filters on the DJI Pocket and DJI Action cameras because of this. Try it out, and as you do, you'll get faster at just looking at the light and determining "It's really sunny...I need at least ND 16 or 32." That's how it's been for me, and I'm so much faster in the process. Thanks for watching!

No green screen at all. I don’t know how to do that In Davinci Resolve. The pocket has sharp focus in bright light, and people were waiting to use the court. You can also hear the cars in the background.
