What is a Typical Morning in the Army? | Infantry Platoon Commander
Hi everyone - I have had a lot of requests for this type of video so I thought I'd show you all what happens in a typical morning in the Army when in camp, through the eyes of a platoon commander in the Infantry.
It usually starts with PT and in this video I jump on a company/platoon run with C 'Essex' Company, 1 Royal Anglian. Details of the run:
- 4 miles steady state
- 8/8:30 min/mile
- 1 water stop
Fitness is a big part of Army life, particularly in the Infantry. So doing some sort of PT happens most mornings.
If you like this sort of content, let me know if the comments below and drop me a thumbs up - thanks!

Meanwhile in the lower ranks block. The lads are heaving from going out on the lash the night before and ushering out some pad brat or slapper they brought back the night before. Skipping brekkie and running on pure alcohol and spewing up all the way round the PT course. I miss them times haha..

As a CSM of a rifle company in BAOR, PL commanders were actively discouraged from interfering with the smooth running of the way PL SGTs sorted out the administrations of their blokes in the mornings. But very pleased to see them after NAAFI break.

I’m not going to roast you as the military has evolved via science since my Commission into the Royal Marines in 1987. First was the terrible running in DMS mk 2. Plus the RM have psychopaths as PTI’s. It really looks so more evolved and almost SF sensible level of respect. Thanks for letting me grumble internally about “In my day” Best Regards Greg

DMS in '87?? No mate I joined in '85 ( Royal Artillery) & we were issued combat high boots. Infact I remember 29 Commando guys came round to recruit & they all wore combat high boots. Definitely in '87 no one wore DMS. I was in '87 attached to the Green Howard's in Londonderry & they had combat high boots & the SA80. I still had an SLR.

Have the British Army scrapped uniformity these days? It would always be on the Company's daily detail what the OOD would be for PT (Issued green T-shirt/Company T-shirt, navy shorts, white socks) and god help any man jack that didn't observe the daily detail.

How many soldiers, including the officer in charge, typically make up a platoon in the British Army? Is the commanding officer of a platoon a Captain or a Major? Do officers such as Majors, Lieutenant Colonels, and Colonels engage in direct combat with troops on the front line? I’ve heard that officers from 2nd Lieutenant to Captain typically fight alongside soldiers in the thick of battle, whereas those of Major rank and above primarily assume command and control responsibilities.

Oh so different from when I joined the Jnr Para Coy as a 15 year old in 1972. Then when we ran in the mornings it was in full combats and DMS boots, bunny hops and casually carrying along the way. We lived approx 14 to a room and we where constantly hungry. No helping yourself to portions then, a untrained cook would issue with the portions, try and steal another sausage and you would get a ladle over your wrist. No doubt the army has evolved but turning up without the uniform running gear would have ended up with you on a disciplinary and extra PT

To prepare psychologically, sit at your computer all day, staring at the screen. For fitness preparation, drink until 0300 then at 0800 run until you are sick and practice the art of masking your pain despite the fact that your lungs and teeth are burning and bile is building up to an explosive vomiting session.

Prepare by learning about how to use a gym and 2-5k runs, simple as that don’t over think any of it and go to training with a fresh and malleable mindset 👍🏼

Just one observation all that running on hard surfaces going to wear down joints knees ankles real bad, end up at this rate early onset arthritis age 40. Why not use treadmills or bicycles for exercise keep soldiers fit but preserve joints
@djrxp
@djrxp 2 жыл бұрын
In fairness, a good point. And we do use treadmills and bikes now and then, it's not always road running. But considering how many of us there are that are doing PT everyday, it would require a lot of equipment that isn't available and is largely impractical.
