I have a recollection that i installed this machine or the Demo evaluation setup at S4C. It was quite a long journey to get there and back in a day from Newbury. Thank you for jogging my memory. I started at Quantel as a spotty nerd apprentice in September 1987 and left in December 2001 where is was working in from the Field service team until December 2001.

Cut down versions of machines always make me think of the Rick And Morty Butter Robot. "What is my purpose?" "You're a stillstore." Nice to see these machines back to life and getting used to their true potential, keep it up!

Great video as always - it's really cool to see all our hard work on the Security PALs and passwords coming together to bring a new Paintbox into the world!

Fantastic video as always - really interesting to see the whole process from start to finish; very much appreciate you making one decent length video too, instead of splitting it into a series. It's surprising how capable the machine is with the stock cards, even before you installed the upgraded bits to it.

As much as I want one, defo think the museum idea is the best. And thanks for the shout out!

so great to see you crack a Picturbox into a paintbox. Always found those machines to be impossibly frustrating because even at the time I knew they were 'hobbled' paintboxes and I knew about the security chip.

Great video and channel! I was obsessed with the Paintbox during the 80’s and 90’s. When I was a student I managed to get into all the major facility houses in London to see Quantel machines in action - Framestore, MPC etc. also BBC Pebble Mill. I was particularly interested in Graphics Paintbox and got to see it in action at Harmer Holbrook and BPCC Video Graphics and saw how they retouched photos. I also applied for a job at Quantel and got the full tour of the factory, labs etc. Alas didn’t get the job. When at college I was using a Spaceward Supernova system which was used on the Knightmare TV series and did some work using this system at facility AV houses. Not as good as Quantel.

Weirdly, the first V-Series I bought (from NI Broadcast) was from S4C, too.

20:12 "heddiw" in the file names. Yeh, this was definitely used in Welsh TV, S4C.

Have you seen the RMC channel he is setting up a space for people to use and experience retro tech he might be able to make use of it or have some contacts definitely think it should stay in the public domain not a private collection, as a welsh viewer its funny to see the S4C childrens slides as my children watch it now and the slides are identical still

how would the reporters upload their images to it? could they do it remotely I wonder?

Mark, I've got a bunch of old Quantel MO discs and a SCSI drive. Is there a way to mount the Quantel disk and partition format on a PC? I'd like to see what I have on those old discs... I have a copy of the old Quantel Edit Box - Pixal Translator FTP software not sure if that is helpful or not. I remember that the Unix ImageMagick suite of programs will convert the old type 300 VPB images to SGI, TGA, and TIFF, if I remember correctly... But I can't mount the Quantel filesystem in Linux or DOS... Cheers! Dan

I wonder if PiSCSI would work instead of a Scsi to SD? I'd hope that one of the computer of media museums would take the Paintbox if you can't keep it, but if you want to keep it I have no objection.
