In this video i begin a big project to restore a 1995 vintage Quantel HAL Express back to working.
The HAL was a post production video compositing and effects system from the 1990s. It helped bring onto your screen all those edgy graphics we saw on TV in the early 1990s.

Early HALs used Fujitsu 2380 Parallel transfer disk packs as per Harry. One for Luma, one for chroma. Two of those in a 5U rack gave 75 seconds of storage IIRC. Dylans came later not long after that.

Wow, ok i never knew that. I thought HAL only used Dylans. Did you maintain Q hardware or work at Q? Would love to have you part of the community if you have working knowledge of the early 1990s machines.

I wonder if they did use the obscure "spindle sync" signal for the SCSI storage box. Almost all SCSI harddisks of the 90s had an extra pin that you could hook up to which was labelled "spindle sync", and it was basically a signal that triggered once per platter rotation. Back then I always wondered where this was used, as even enterprise RAID systems of the time didn't use it...

The HARRY and the Paintbox were a good team. I got a Harry (and a PB) up and running, many years ago at a post house in Southern Ontario. That was my first experience with buying and selling frames back and forth between the devices! Those giant 384 MB drives were formable indeed!

The Keyers and tracking in the Henry were simply amazing! The HAL Keyers were much less capable than the Henry, but they were still very useful machines indeed!

I believe on HAL Express there's an option which gives HAL the same keyer as Henry and Editbox.

We had a Hal, Henry, Harry, Paintbox, and later a Domino... The Henry was around $500K Canadian if memory serves...

In one of the old Domino demo rooms at Newbury there was a large hole in the plasterboard wall. I asked what caused that and was told a demo of a new product was not going to plan and someone launched part of the kit across the room

when I freelanced on Hals during the early '90s the rate was $600 per hour, of which I could sometimes get $125 if I happened to be double booked - not bad for 1990s!
