Hi Dan, that was brilliant, especially the South Shore action. I have a couple of Athearn B/Box GP38-2s decorated in CSS yellow, that I picked-up off eBay UK, so it was great to see some real ones at work.

6:59 Interesting consist - Ex-Metroliner cab car, followed by an Amfleet 1 coach, then followed by 2 ex-Metroliner cabs paired together... not usual, I imagine, to see ex-metroliner cab cars put together as if they were married pairs, like when the Metroliners were originally delivered to the Penn Central.

The two paired together are actually “Michigan Coaches” which were Metroliners that had their cabs removed to turn them into regular trailer coaches. You didn’t often see them paired together like that though.

My grandmother's house is barely visible in that shot at 17:27 (the house at the corner of Chicago Avenue and County Line). All through the 90s as a lad I'd just stroll up to Highlands and watch trains for hours.

Some really awesome footage there! I had an aunt the lived in Beverly Shores through the 1990s and a lot of familiar places there. We always went there for Thanksgiving so there was not a lot of freight rail traffic, when we were there. Michigan City was an interesting place to day the least!

That's one of my favorite places. Was very glad to see them restore the depot in the late '90s.

Yes sir, that is a sharp little Depot! Have not been down there for at least 5 years, as my aunt moved to Hawaii. To correct my previous comment- to say the least, not day the least, LOL!

In the first part of his video, what street is that train going down? I from the South Side and I don't remembers this street at all or is this South Bend? Where I grew up the South Shore ran along Lake Shore Drive. The worst accident they had was right off 31st by Michael Reese Hospital. I grew up on 33rd street a block from the Illinois Central tracks which was used by the South Shore train.

DennyDreadBassMan The street running is in Michigan City Indiana. I put more details about all the locations in the video description. I've seen pictures of that south side wreck in the '70s.

Must have been kind of weird pulling up to a stoplight next to a you know...train! Do they still do this street running?
@dlcluley
@dlcluley 7 жыл бұрын
Weird & Cool. Yes, they still have the street trackage in Michigan City. The South Shore runs about 25 passenger trains on weekdays, and 15-20 on the weekends, plus a handful of freight movements.

Yes, the beginning & end parts were on the South Shore. The Metra trains in the middle were on the BN

Dan Cluley Thanks, does the south shore railway still exist.
@dlcluley
@dlcluley 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. Most of the commuters look the same, but they have added some double deck cars as well. The freight engines are now orange.

Around the same time all this was going on, Grand Trunk use to run steel coil trains through Lansing with Grand Trunk and Chessie yellow or orange South Shore GP 38-2s.

Back in 1991, just a year before, I took the train from Lansing to Chicago, to see my aunt. She lived a few houses away from the BRC/ NS 75th street rail corridor. Heading out on the Amtrak back to Lansing, near the Amtrak Yard, and the Grand Trunk main line crossing 79th street near Hayford Junction, were the first places I saw the new railroad crossing lights that are common today. Those lights looked huge at the time!!
