Nice to see someone on KZfaq doing road work that knows the fundamentals of working a road. So few know the importance of good drainage. I spent 40 years building and maintaining roads so I know a little about it. I came to learn about how to use the box blade I just bought and know very little about. Great job! I have a 29 hp Kubota with a loader I’ve used for years. I just bought a box blade and discovered what a useful implement it is. A hydraulic top link, and hydraulic side link are pipe dreams for me. But the manual links are still really useful, and easy to adjust, but not on the fly. I can see from watching the piston adjust that the hydraulic top link gives you precise control and the ability to make fine adjustments as the terrain changes. 👍

Did my first boxblade job this week. I used your techniques. Thanks very much. What a great tool. All went well except my neck hurt at the end of the day!

I have about a mile of gravel road going up and down hills. I use a rake angled as necessary to pull the gravel from the shoulders back to the center of the road. I then use the box scraper to shape the road. This really works great and means that we seldom have to have fresh gravel over the top. I have a sub compact tractor with 3 hydraulic cylinders for the 3 links, which makes all the difference. Great video and appreciate the effort. Also echo other comments - working very cheap.

Great film which explained over and above the normal comments. I am looking at modifying a scraper with a three point hitch I already have to make a box blade for general leveling work around the house.

Nice work! I did my first pay driveway job last Saturday. Charged 50. The guy gave me 80. It took two hours but the driveway was cut really bad and about 200’ long and I put a load of dirt he already had on it and pulled some that had washed. I really enjoy doing tractor work. He was very happy with the job and wants me to come back and cut ditches and crown his road that comes to his drive. Anyway enjoyed the video and nice job spreading them rocks with the truck.

When it is good and damp like in this video I find that dropping the chisels down a few inches below the blade helps to loosen up the packed down gravel and bring it back to the service. I have a thousand foot driveway and have put a many a truck load of gravel on it over the years. That gravel just keeps going to China. It's there, it just has to be loosened up and brought back to the service with a box scrape with the chisels down. This has saved me a many a truck load of gravel in the past 5 yrs or so. Now I wish I had that packer, nice real nice.

Thank you for the advice! I’m 20 running small excavating company and I use our loader tractor for a lot of finish grading. It’s just so much easier to haul around than my small dozer. I need a tilt like bad! There so convenient!

Great job! I am a retired grader operator and I set my my own NH tractor similar to yours but also with one side cylinder for tilting. I also added 120# of weight to the rear of the box using 10# barbell disks, so the weight is adjustable. Works great for driveways, parking lots, new lawns, walking paths and finish work.

That New Holland tractor did a great job and the roller you had on it later also did a great job and you must be so pleased at how your driveway is looking now. I have to hook my tractor up to my box blade and do some leveling in my yard, and get ready to do the same in my sister's yard once the contractor is through building her new house. I don't think they will level it like it should be, but with my box blade, and landscaping rake I should be able to get the job done. My brother may give me a hand using his tractor and box blade also to get the job done. I loved the work you did and your wife must really appreciate you making it better to get into and out to the road.

Hi Dennis, Great video with a super job well done and many, many extremely good tips. I did a lot of tailgating of stone back in the day and I thought I'd give you some of my tips, especially where you have power lines and or tree limbs. Before you start, climb up and check out how the quarry loaded the bed, your going to want most of the stone back against the tailgate. What I would do is raise the bed up maybe 1/2 way pull forward and hit the brakes so as to knock the gravel back against the tailgate. You might check your progress out by climbing up and seeing how it went. You don't need it all back there, it'll raise your front end off the ground if the bed gets too high. Definitely do this before encountering that power line and you won't have to have the bed up very high as there's plenty of stone still back there against the tailgate. Once you clear your danger zone then go ahead and raise her up to where all the stone is out....... You probably knew much if not all of this anyway, but just in case.

Very good. I use a T8.330 with an 8' box blade which has two angled blades that allow the hydraulic top link to control the net deposition left, right, or center. These farm tractors have digital lift control with a toggle for up and return which makes it easy to set the exact cut and come back to it time after time. I live on a plantation in northeast Louisiana with 4 miles of main road to maintain. I have found that just using an excavator with a smooth bucket allows me to maintain about a 6" ditch along both side for drainage, something that a homeowner wouldn't likely be happy with.

As a truck driver, I love the look on your face as you 1st see that wire. You're one of the few people on here that knows how to actually use a box blade properly. The smooth drum is top notch finish work! I got the ol water filled roller, but at least it gets a little compression until the 1st rain comes thru. $100? Hmmm. I'm doing this for a couple cases of good Leinenkugel's beer. Great video, much appreciated

I find using a regular angle blade first to cut the sides and pull the gravel back towards the center of the road and then come back with the box blade to finish off works best and although you need 2 tractors or have to switch blades it ends up being a faster and better job. You are right on the hydraulic top link for the BB, it makes a world of differance.

I sure wish you were in the Southeast Texas area, I need to hire someone who knows how to use a tractor like you do! I found an ad on a local website where people advertise goods and services for sale in my area, and it was an old man who said he could fix my driveway. But he didn't have a clue of what he was doing. He made it even worse. I still paid him though out of the kindness of my heart, and because I felt sorry for him, but now I've got to find someone else who can fix what he did wrong, and then fix what I originally wanted done in the first place. You did an excellent job on that driveway!

When I got tired of living out of a suitcase travelling the UK and abroad chasing construction project. I started my own company employing 7 men doing much the same as you. But boy I wish I had known about a box blade, it would have saved us a lot of trouble. The way we laid and /or resurfaced gravel driveways was with a JCB 3cx backhoe, fitted with a 4 in 1 front bucket. To adjust for camber we would slide the hoe to the low side and swing out the bucket, this would tilt the whole machine. Then blade the old surface with the front bucket fully open as a dozer blade. To final grade the crusher run we'd close up the bucket till just 3' or 4" open. Then blade out the open bucket would prevent the machine forming dips. You ran that load of gravel out just fine. Have you got an hydraulic tail board, or was it held on a chain as we did.

The only thing I questioned was running for 8 ton of stone. You're already paying the trucking fee might as well haul a full load. Extra Stone never goes to waste

I have the same box blade. It is an amazing attachment for this type of thing. It also works great for leveling building sites. I have on occasion cut and filled feet of dirt with mine. Its like a tiny little cat and scraper

It took me three years before I could get my neighbor to understand that he needed ditches for his driveway. I kept fixing his driveway and kept telling him he needed a ditch to make it drain and finally he figured it out. The top hydraulic does make life a lot easier.

Love the control you have with the hydraulics on top link! I checked, $900 to install on my tractor, I am thinking about it.

Have you ever used a track spreader? It’s just a v type deal that attaches to your apron and diverts the rock into the tracks. I don’t always like using ours but if you have a road that’s rutted bad it sure helps sometimes. It also makes a load go like two or three times further. We use ours mainly on oil lease roads that don’t get graded much just added rock. It’s something to think about anyway. I built mine out of some plate and mounted it with a receiver hitch. Also my favorite truck to spread with has a manual hoist control that doesn’t shut off the pto so you can raise and lower the bed as you go under stuff.

couple points not brought up in this vid. and thx by the way for this vid. it's useful info on box scrapers. the points missed 1. to remove pot holes u most often have to cut below them, and regrade. 2.potholes might be caused by higher edges, which are genreally caused by soft spots, saturated below the pothole, thus downward pressure Squished the sides up and out. 3. I never never lay fash rock over a surface that I haven't scarified.I was disappointed to see the ripper teeth up. logically, in this vid. the blade cut the surface of the tire tracks and scarified. but such was not covered in the narration. breaking the surface of packed material creates a bonding surface for which the new rock can adhere. otherwise it's like laying marbles on the floor and trying to walk on them. in very short order they get side cast. the new rock must be locked in. this fellow clearly is expert in his field, but mentioning these points helps those who are not.

Your right, $100.00 is way too little. I used to do the same kind of work as you and made a good living. We would do the job a little differently from each other but would end up in the same place. You defiantly know what you are doing. I started out in the 60s with a Ferguson TO 20 @ $12.50 per and went up from there.

If I was doing that I look back in the pond be running over the road because I cut too deep cut in the side of the pond lol. What a beautiful job I wish you lived around here a hundred dollars ain't even worth pulling the tractor out of the shed

How you feel about those Grading boxes or Levelers as opposed to the box blade. I need to buy one or the other but im stuck on which to get. The leveler seems to work very well also but is twice the cost.

The hydrolics are nice, but with the right cant to the box you can run the outside down one side, up the other. (still providing crown)(
