These are my notes on a nice series AD&D module by Dave Brown and Don Turnbull. I provide what I think a DM should look for when getting ready to run this adventure.

Very much obliged for your continued efforts here. My eyesight is not great, and so for my recent 1 e campaign I've been relying on listening to reviews, overviews, and a bit of playthroughs for the salt marsh series. You're deep dives into all of these have been a real source of inspiration, as I've been able to combine the key elements of the three scenarios into one relative Mega session. Thank you so much for all your efforts.

U3. I enjoyed the idea of this series of modules Our DM was experienced and tried to get us through this. We did great with U1 and wrecked on U2. Our DM Had an extra player who played one of the senior Lizard men NPC's to attempt to have us role play with them. It didn't work. You do need to load everyone up with water magic before you get to U3. Also need lots of invisibility and silence to get through this module. And lots of people with infravision or ultravision.

Great review. Thanks! Oh dear! Just way to many reasons not to go anywhere near this! Disappointing because U1 and U2 look great.

While U1 and U2 are great adventures with lots of fun RP encounters, we always found U3 to be a dungeon crawl slog. The stacking negatives of light, water, suffocation, and movement took all the impetus of action from the game. When I run it now, I have the Lizardman Alliance be the end of the series or sending them elsewhere afterwards (A1 is a good choice.)

Indeed, that was my conclusion as well, and the lizardman alliance is a great end.

Thanks! I share your reservations. The group I took through U1 and U2 kind of got bogged down in U3. We all did. I think to some degree, DMs have to be willing to bend the rules of underwater travel/combat (and all that goes with it) if the group is going to be able to complete this one. Also, using longer durations for potions of underwater breathing, enhanced effects of other magic items that assist with this lair, etc. In a sense, we have to compensate for the design flaws that are inherent in it.

I think that's the point, if you are willing to fudge the negatives, make the adventure a more straight shooting 'run', then it would be good, but that also runs dangerously close to just making your own version of U3... so there is that
