So when I first received The Armorer's Handbook for review, I had no idea how much this would impact my own homebrew games. Boy am I glad that I do these reviews, because this is one of my new must haves and favorite DM's Guild product. This fixes some of my major complaints around armor, weapons and equipment in 5e in a way that just makes sense. I don't often say to go and pick up something outright, but if you want to expand/improve crafting and armor/weapons without having to make everything a magic item, this is 100% what you're looking for.
To pick up a copy for yourself, head here:
www.dmsguild.com/product/3003...
Here's what the description on the DM's Guild says:
"This supplement is a comprehensive modular framework that allows characters to improve their equipment as they see fit by finding some artisans and spending some coin! Chapter 1 covers nonmagical upgrades, which approximate the basic +1-3 progression of magic items in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Chapter 2 introduces rune magic as a means to imbue your equipment with magical properties, including a fully-realized crafting system for characters wishing to create their own runestones using simple gemstones."
Catch us LIVE playing D&D 5e every Tuesday night at 8:30PM Eastern and every Monday night at 9PM Eastern!

Sorry I didn't think it needed to be mentioned as they were just additions, but yes i know that Silver weapons/silvering weapons exists. (PHB 100gp) And that Adamantime weapons were added in Xanathar's for an additional 500gp. (Attacks against objects are critical hits).

The point of 5e wasn't just to sell new books, it was to simplify the game for the players and for the DM. These are 3rd edition styled hard bonus numbers, which nobody can ever remember or keep straight, thus they have to start looking things up, which slows down combat rounds. Waiting forever for your turn is nobody's idea of fun. Destroying the bounded accuracy system is an even larger betrayal of the core system. In 5e players hit two thirds of the time, and they almost never have to worry about the type of damage they're doing (blunt, slashing, piercing) as on the few occasions where they do have to worry about it, it's only a 50% reduction, not some hard-cap number which could completely eliminate all damage. Unbalancing that is only going to frustrate players when it's a boss ignoring their efforts, and frustrate DM's when it's a player taking zero damage because it means they have to use more dangerous monsters which can actually challenge their players. That's a major problem for DMs because while some players might be able to withstand their brutality, there will invariably be other players who will be outright smoked. This whole book is an example of wastebasket thinking, where stinky old ideas are dug up out of the garbage and thrown back onto the table.

@@LockSteady Using the DMG monster creation table, player are supposed to hit 65% of the time. There is one level where they hit 70% of the time but might be an error in my calculations.

@@LockSteady Yes... kinda... pathfinder and 3.5 are still hugely popular because of some of these customizations. yes they can get complicated but... for more experienced players 5e can almost be too simple. small modifications to weapons or armors can make an item feel unique instead of Rimrun the longsword made by dwarfs... is just a long sword... maybe a +1 longsword. however if you make the fact that it was made by dwarves important it becomes so much cooler. suddenly it doesnt need to be a +1 sword because the sword has its own properties because of who made it. the sword might be different if made by elves or by giants. or simply a master smith made armor special for you with properties that fit your character. I have literally watched players throw away rare magical items because it doesn't fit their character or because the item wasn't what they expected. this allows an item to grow with a character. that heirloom sword left by your mother can now be upgraded so it gets more powerful with you. instead of being thrown away because you have a +1 sword now.

Hi Ted, thank you so much for taking the time to do a review! To address your final comment: I'm new to the DM's Guild stage, but more such toolkits are coming as time permits! In the meantime, if you or your viewers are interested in more like this you or they can download a copy of my Alchemy Almanac on Google Drive (link: drive.google.com/file/d/16cxfcOsZmQ3jF8lOLvaml_cN2aHqyZvW/view ) for free! As its now been in-use for a few years at my table (and has improved a lot since the linked version), an updated and expanded Almanac is going to be my next major toolkit release.

Now that an official Artificer class exists, how's that balancing act going? - Also, why is Silvered an improvement tag rather than a special material? The way it is here, recreating a basic +1 weapon (100-500 gp) costs a full *_1,700_* gp.

NEED. Both as a player and a DM. Yeah. 5e's crafting is so bare bones that tool proficiency in and of themselves are almost pointless. And what is there isn't practical. You are kind of left hanging. Potions, poisons, gathering herbs, crafting, etc. Always comes up and it sucks when you don't have anything on hand to tell your players.

As a history buff I saw “leather armor is gambison and studded leather is a jerkin” and immediately went to look to buy the book. I also always disliked how D&D had basically no improvements from design, you just get magic items, and this makes equipment so much more interesting Enchantments should do cool things and +1s should come from “sharpened” or “balanced” and such. Cause that’s how we always describe them anyways. As a dm I say “magically sharpened” and “feels well balanced” for a +1 so intuitively it would make a lot more sense if that weren’t magic
@colocado6685

So whats padded armour? And wouldn't it be better for studded leather to be scaled linothorax? Considering how the linothorax was most likely tube and yoke armor
@colocado6685

I mean, yeah. Studded leather is a misinterpretation of the brigandine, but the AC doesn't make sense for it to be brigandine
@TheodoreMinick
@TheodoreMinick 4 жыл бұрын
@@colocado6685 "Padded" drops off the list. There is also a proper Brigandine, which replaces half-plate. Half-plate, in turn, becomes step 2 in building your full set of heavy armor. Basically, you get a cuirass, then add tassets and pauldrons to make half-plate, and finally finish with the greaves and vambraces to make the full set. And every set of heavy and medium armor comes with a gambeson, or you can get a discount by already having one.

This is by far the best splat I've seen from DM's Guild. They managed to nail the balance on expanding options while not pushing the envelope too far. The Focus on balance at the beginning and end is what really made me happy about this purchase, as it does give one a leg to stand on when presenting new ideas to the group. It also give players something to do with their money which, without being able to chase magic items around the market, was kind of a problem. This adds a needed money sink and downtime activity.

If I may add to this, Esquiel's Guide to Magic Weapons and Xanathar's Extraordinary Vault are two other DM's guild items you may wish to look into for crafting, and I recommend both. E's Guide gives many new weapons, loot tables, a weapon generator, racial designed weapons, blessings and curses, as well as some background lore from the Faerun universe. X's Vault gives many historical conversions to 5e of weapons, armor and gear, many new magical gear variants as well as bringing back some of the things that are missing in 5e from older editions like glamour and shadow weave, and ideas/rule sets for crafting from gathered materials and some very interesting mounts and vehicles, all rolled in with xanathar's snarky little comments. I also HIGHLY recommend Elminster's Guide to Magic as well. A complete book of spells, sub classes, items and lore. Edit: If you would like a preview of some sort, I would be more than happy to provide, as I own all of the above (obviously).

Some of it is basically a conversion of all the material & weapon rules from pathfinder into 5e. That's not a criticism - as a previous player of pf now DM'ing for 5e, I sorely miss all that stuff & have already used a couple of it's ideas in my games. I will definitely be picking this up & I can even see this along with the runes significantly overhauling my current approach to gear progression in my campaigns. Having said that, I already had plans for it in the base rules, but with this supplement an artificer build I had thought up could be incredibly powerful very quickly XD

One thing I do for my players in D&D 5e (and earlier editions) is use a gradually increasing (graded) cost increase that the player can pay to have an artisan imbue your base armor from the book to a +1-5 (graded G.P. cost of course) The cost for each of these bonuses increases exponentially based on what the artisan will charge for labor + the cost of the highly magical ingredients for the infusion. This keeps their armor getting better and better, so that it can stay on a relatively equal footing with the increasing power of the monsters they face at higher and higher levels.

I recently found that armor proofing in this system interact extremely well with the feat Heavy Armor master. Since HAM gives a damage reduction, and armor proofing makes any non-magic damage that is 8 or less deal no damage. You basically makes anything that deal 2d6 impossible to deal damage with, as only a max damage roll deal damage without modifiers. If you also add adamantime that lowers any damage by 3, you take no damage on non-magical attacks of 14 or lower. The Champion (CR 9) enemy will have 46% - 36% chance of deal any damage to you at all *IF* he hits all of his attacks when you got 3rd tier armor proofing and HAM.

Honestly, the in game disadvantage on stealth doesn't need to be there, also it was most likely far more common than leather, and given its commonality, was probably superior to leather, and even if not it would be far easier to repair. I read that table as them removing "padded armor" and renaming leather armor as such.
@The_Yukki
@The_Yukki 4 жыл бұрын
@@JeikobuI agree, padded is better for protection than leather, and the disadvantage makes no sense, it's literally 2 pieces ofcloth with varied stuffing between them. But that's kinda game balance. cheaper=disadvantage same way there are 2 medium armors with same ac, one is cheaper but gives disadvantage. Another thing is, that DnD is a fantasy game afterall, and it's a fantasy trope that best "light" armor=leather, ideally get black or dark brown with optional studs. If u wanna play a gritty realism game? sure go for padded, if u wanna make it full realism, remind that full plate fighter/paladin/cleric that plate is heavy and has no airflow so with gritty realism wearing plate for a day would be 1point of exhaustion (fuck that came out passive agressive, didn't mean to sorry ;-;)

The main NPC in my campaign is: - a dwarf - a rune knight fighter - the second best smith of his clan - and loves pimping armour with all the jewels my players find. I NEED this.

These sound like potential "magic" items but i wouldn't feel too comfortable adding in all of these tags and options as a whole. But it seems good to pick from

Really? If anything, I'd say the costs seem a tad exorbitant. Though I guess the Critical tag could be pretty potent for certain builds

I've picked this up because of your review @Nerd Immersion, I think I'm going to be using the rune and hieroglyph magic from Kobold Press Deep magic to add rarer armor upgrades. Eversense the Artificer became official I feel rules like these are needed more then ever.

Your videos are recommended to anyone who is subscribed to d and d channel. This is good because it means your views mean you will be recommended more, but it’s bad because people have less incentive to subscribe.

That adjustment to make greatclubs count as heavy is such a boon to one of my character plans (possibly my favourite one). It now works without having to fudge in extra multiclass levels or feats that I don't really have space for, just to match the RAW. Of course it also just makes a lot of sense! The only thing that seems missing to me is stone as a weapon/armor material.

Funny you released this video like maybe 4 days after me buying this pdf. Yea I like some of the stuff in here and plan to use some of it and help inspire some of my own ideas. I'd love to see more content like this. Maybe take a look at harmunds guide, pretty cool idea of monster bits and what you can or how to sell stuff you skin off varies monsters it is Pretty cool. There is a lot of gms guild stuff I'd love to see videos on.

I do like the shield options, that was something that has annoyed me that they didn't have it. Sure I could homebrew it, but when I was running adventure league it was a no go. Being strapped to rules as written can be quite difficult due to 5e vagueness

This seems awesome. I've bern working on a whole magical items system where the items bind to each other and then give you bonuses if you have similar items like str sword str shield etc. Very basic explination bit this book may make it alot easier. I wanted a system that you can progress your character in more ways than just leveling and gaining those bonuses. I will have to get this and read it and see what I can come up with from it.

My friends since 3.5E have always wanted weapons that grew with them. If you gave them a material, they'd get it via questing. Oh it needs to be a scale from an iron dragon? Well, guess we're going out dragon hunting. 5E has been very barebones and required a lot of invention and testing to make weapons feel like their progressing while not being too broken.

Is there anything said, one way or the other, if Forge clerics can use their channel divinity on any of these upgrades? I did catch the line about NPC's needing to apply tags, just hoping there was more to it.
