Saw a cool tip in some videos comments... what about sliding a ring onto a dagger or other item? So you might have temporary abilities based on drawing & activating that.

Random fun: Assassin's Bracer Requires Attunement Rare This magical leather and gold-trimmed bracer is a favorite of assassins participating in high class societies, which allows it to blend in with the extravagant decorum. The bracer contains a dimensional pocket that can store up to 5lbs of equipment that can be no longer than 1ft on any side. I love watching the D&D cartoon as a kid. That bow was fun to play with. My group played the characters from the cartoon in one campaign. The Dm determined the stats for the characters. And we started at 1st with cool magical items.

i like to think of Hank's Energy Bow when a fey wanderer ranger uses a bow for the "dreadful strike" feature - - and made me think of other possible variations of damage category

Very respectable list. I love that you added Hank's bow to the list. I'd actually forgotten about that, and I have the handbook with everyone's personal magic item. Definitely agree that the stat boosting magic items should be a thing. There's no reason that we shouldn't have the gloves, periapt, and cloak by now. Honestly, I agree with 90% of the list as being a valid example of things we should get in 5e. About the only item I honestly would have thought should have been added to this list, that you didn't put on here (and I'd have replace Ring of Silent Spells with it), is any of the shirts that grant you damage reduction (angels, demonskin, bone, chains, fey, ironskin, etc, etc, etc.). Mentioning prior about gaining the abilities of classes, we don't really have a way to gain a barbarian's damage reduction short of a one-level dip, but those shirts could allow you to receive half damage from attacks that weren't magical, or weren't adamantine, or silver, or something else, based on the shirt itself. Besides that, I'd probably have brought up the blindfold of true darkness which gives you blindsight 30 ft, or the belt of battle which essentially gives you action surge.

Nerd Immersion Might have to eventually do a Top 10 Honourable Mention 3.5 Magic Items. I’m definitely not against enchantments for weapons and armor. There’s so many in Champions of Ruin alone that just can’t be beat.

Trust me do yourself a favour and look at 3.5 books, and if the opportunity arises to play take advantage of it, I'm not a 3.5 or nothing fanatic but while it is more work it's so much more free, I had a character get his RAW charisma score up to 44 pitting him 8 above the gnomish goddess of beauty if I remember correctly so garl glittergold made him a god, I had a druid who could land something like 12 natural attacks a round by becoming a German certified and growing horns antlers raptor claws, stingers and more by becoming a geomancer. Had yet another character with the "flaw" (opposite of a feat that let's you take an extra feat) that was "distinguishing feature" whuch for a druid that only wears a 12 inch long loincloth was a 14 inch flaccid cock, so much fuckery to be had

Interesting list, I like the idea of the bow-staff coming back for the kinds of rangers I like to play and Hank's Bow was neat, I loved having that as part of the DVD collection of the cartoon I bought.

In my old 3.5 game we had a joke item, the vorpal spoon. It was basically useless unless you crit, so it only got used a couple times, but damn did the whole table laugh when someone actually scored a kill with it.

Monks belt does work like you think it does in 3rd edition You have unarmored defense as a 5th level monk so dex+wis+1, its just worded weird. I always tried to get this on my mage characters so i didnt have to multiclass monk just for ac

The Monks belt also stacks with Monks which gives them a extra 5 levels

First, you probably mean dex+wis bonus + 10, not +1. Second, it doesn't combine with mage armor which offers an AC of 13 + dex bonus, also mentioned in the Sage Advice Compendium. Only a wizard with a wisdom score of 18 or higher would benefit from it if mage armor is available. It might be useful for other characters who typically have high dex and wis scores and armor restrictions and no mage armor, like druids.

Caster level for magic items has nothing to do with activating it, just an FYI. Has to do with the item's saving throw if specifically targeted and when crafting the item. Anyone can use it if they know how to activate it. This is why Fighter's can use rings of protection, which have a CL.

travel cloak - This lightweight gray-green cloak protects the wearer against some of the hazards and discomforts of outdoor travel. The wearer resists cold as if affected by an endure elements (cold) spell. Furthermore, the cloak sheds precipitation, keeping dry the area of the body covered by the cloak (head to knees). In addition, three times per day, the wearer can reach into one of the pockets of the cloak and pull out trail rations sufficient to feed himself. From another pocket, the wearer may with-draw a stoppered 1-quart metal flask that produces either pure cool water or sugared hot tea. The flask produces up to two gallons of liquid per day. The flask only 'refills if placed back in the pocket of the cloak; if separated from the cloak or wearer, it has no magical properties. Finally, when the wearer utters a command word, the travel cloak expands once per day to the size of a one-person tent. Caster Level: 5th Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, endure elements, create food and water, enlarge Market Price; 1,200 gp Weight.: 1 lb. one of the best items, period. and if I could get a real life one, this'd be my first choice.

Remember with the Monk' Belt, that AC Bonus comes with you Wisdom modifier added to it, when unarmored. That does come as part of the Monk's AC Bonus.

I'm using the 3rd edition Samurai from Oriental Adventures to get cursespewing from the book of vile darkness onto my katana which is an amazing enchantment hopefully I can boost the DC save for it haha.

There is one item in 5e that I wish was like in 3.5, and that's the armblade. The armblade being a magic + nothing weapon is just dumb IMHO, the artificer can't even use both the +1 and armblade on the same weapon with RAW.

The Survival Pouch is nice, but the Travel Cloak from Magic of Faerun tops it easily. It removes the droll keeping track of rations and is just cool. Just my 2 cp.

I get the power creep fear but man I miss magic item crafting and trade economy from 3e. Funny note never played 3.5, did play 3.0 and d20 modern.

3.5 is a lot like 3.0 so it's kinda like the different between dialects if English like Southern and Australian or California and UK or Midwest and Scottish, like similar but a bit different. I actually still main 3.5 my current character is a tiny sized fey forest gnome warlock drag queen with a giant spider mount that can cast spells and helps him preform, you can't get that shit in other editions

I modified that healing belt for a high level 5E game. It worked as healing over 1 minute (10 rounds) during combat. When activated, it does a small amount (starting at 1d4) of healing to begin with and then ramps up through the 5th through 7th round of healing (somewhere around 5-7d4) and then drops off again. It heals everyone in a 30 foot radius to it. Worked pretty well for the few games it was used.

There's artwork for the two headed owlbear from Ted's vids last week (the free content he reviewed) that actually looks adorable (besides the extra head) if you wanted a visual for the game's mascot...I recommend that one.

I had my group, lvl 4's, run into owlbears and now the rogue wants a baby owlbear! I want it to be a little farther down the road that they meet a pet vendor but how did you incorporate it in game or any tips?

@@Temp3rMental what happened: The druid went on a scouting mission in a forest and she stumbled upon a young owlbear (brown bear stats until adult.) Owlbear had a foot trapped under a rockfall and was quite weak due to injury and slight starvation. Druid tried to roll animal handling to calm the creature before removing rocks but failed so Owlbear was mistrustful and tried to free itself further exacerbating its injury. She cast Cure Wounds to take care of the worst injuries which calmed the owlbear as it is not in much pain anymore. Druid then gave some food to it before removing the rockpile. Rockpile removal was a Strength DC 14/15 as there were a few big rocks to shift. In the end, the freed owlbear cautiously and curiously started following the Druid and some animal handling and judicious use of deer meat later, obtained an owlbear whose name is so close to Druid's name that I keep confusing them together. Coin flip for gender and got a female. Settled on personality of a cross between a needy labrador and an imperious cat during feeding times plus a habit of trying to squeeze into small spaces (relative to its size) to follow the Druid. Still doesn't like the wizard who likes to collect pets.

Also, druid likes to ocassionally ride owlbear into battle. Up to you want a baby one. Currently considering a levelling system so it does not die so easily in future fights.

Monk's Belt looks nice. Modification's I'd make for 5e would be. You gain a +1 bonus to damage rolls with unarmed strikes. (This saves calculating levels while doing roughly the same thing) You gain 1 free use of Stunning Strike per long rest. This doesn't feel too over powered, I don't know if it should be attunement. But wouldn't be able to be used with Insignia of the Claw if it wasn't. A bonus AC gain on top of that does feel like a little much though. Maybe as a very rare or legendary item requiring attunement.

Among other things the Sharpshooter feat allows you to take (choosing when it's active) a -5 to hit in order to get + 10 to damage on ranged attacks

One of my players is a druid with a direwolf companion, and another is a monk. I'm definitely going to try and implement the Collar and the Monk Belt somehow in my 5e game. Also I agree, there needs to be more items of X stat in 5e.

So, you mentioned the monk's belt. Having a monk in the group I run for, I liked the idea of that, so I thought I'd take a look 5e'ing it. How does this sound? Monk’s Belt : wondrous item, rare (requires attunement). This simple rope belt, when wrapped a character’s waist, confers great ability in unarmed combat. The wearer’s unarmoured movement and unarmed damage is treated as a monk of five levels higher, and can apply their proficiency bonus to their Armour Class while wearing no armour; and if donned by a character who then uses the stunning strike monk feature, their target has disadvantage on the Constitution saving throw to avoid being stunned. If the wearer is not a monk, they gain the unarmoured movement and unarmed damage of a 5th-level monk, and can apply their proficiency bonus to their Armour Class while wearing no armour.

I LOVE 3.5 ive had multiple characters achieve goodhood, one had a 44 raw charisma because his whole focus was increasing his charisma score and he preformed often enough and well enough that money became but a minor trouble at most, by the time he was at a 36 he started attracting extraplanar attention when he preformed and that helped a lot gods pay better, then garl glittergold showed up and he was a gnome bard and thats how he was introduced to the pantheon. 3.5 is wild and more work but it's home for me

They did make a Bowstaff in 5E. in riddle of the Raven Queen they have Gwa’thern Faln it is a +1 longbow that is also a quarterstaff and once a day can cast Faire Fire. recharge at dawn. considered a rare Item.

I recommend the magic item compendium on DriveThruRPG. Has just about all of them, which is the final compendium along with crafting rules and new rolling tables. I use it currently for my group. It has all the complete books and some of the other splat books like the book of exalted deeds. You can find some nice inspiration from the 100s of items in there.

Instead of the Survival Pouch, I prefer the Traveller's Cloak. It can become a tent, provides rations and either water or tea, keeps the wearer (and possessions) dry wherever it covers, and acts as a continual Endure Elements. All for only 1200 gold. If you have that and the spell Prestidigitation, (maybe from a ring, wonderous item, or knowing the spell itself) do you need much else?

belt of monk: bonus action 1d6 stuning strike by 1-5 round (dex mod), utility for each class improved by not weapon attack a kick count: monk save ki point, a fighter has some cc or advantage in all his attack, magic class has a mele attack for run of Oportunity Attack

That swordbow sounds pretty awesome, other than the rapier/bow combo, as for the greatsword, it could be paired with the over sized bow from the Dragon Heist book.

@WhiskeyHound oh I started in 3.5 even though 5.0 was out at the time. It's a bit more work bit still very possible to find a 3.5 group. Don't get me wrong I live all editions and have even played 4.0 without committing sepuku so yeah irs just my preferred, I've had insane characters like the gnome who's charisma got up to 44 and became a god or the insane spirit shamen who never lost a match in the colessium despite beibg a caster beibg fought 3 times a day back when you had to sleep a full 8 hours to get spell slots back or the half celestial gargoyle who's dad (torm) sent him to recruit the preexisting party into the blood war because a truce was reached so it was a war for the planes, that was my first character and he became a god too (I was jumping into a high level campaign obviously)

But those exist in 3.5e and 5e, and there less of magic item and a one off thing that boosts stats. And there also versions that boost Str, Con and Int

Talking about how in 3.5 it tells you how much it costs and all about it, I was reading through some 3.5 books (I started with 5e) and it gives you a list of DCs and relevant checks for lore and stats about creatures and monsters. It’s fucking unreal, and I’m genuinely confused why something so good isn’t in 5e.

@@chandlerpearce6213 Only reason I can think of is Wotc's insistence on leaving out massive amounts of previous editions so that "DM's can make the call for themselves", ignoring the fact that a lot of people coming into d&d with 5e don't have the benefit of knowing that certain mechanics were even a thing in previous editions and would reasonably assume that as they're playing the most recent edition, there wouldn't be a need to consult previous editions as they should have access to the best version of the mechanics.

The stat items are always a cool idea, but Dex and Wis are power stats, so I know Wizards is skittish to add those to the game. Charisma increasing items would also enhance a majority of the spellcasters and also have a large effect on roleplaying given the bounded accuracy of 5e. I miss those items too, but I can see from a design perspective why they are not included. Thankfully we have homebrew to craft those, but if I included them they would be very specific like Eyes of the Eagle.

Sean Vigil as long as the items only set the stat to 19, I don’t think it would be too bad especially considering there is a way to boost strength to 30. That being said, strength is probably the weakest, pun very much intended, stat. A 30 strength on a Barbarian, paladin, or fighter is still insanely powerful.

@@jaredpuwalski8545 I agree, but at higher level range becomes a huge issue. My players always seem to forget that a lot of enemies fly at higher levels! My casters really do not like using their concentration to cast fly on them. As far as impact on general game-play Str, Int, and Con don't really effect too much or are very class specific. Other than Con those are probably the most dumped stats if you don't require them, well at least my players often do. Lol

You sort of answered your question of “why aren’t there items that boost DEX, WIS, or CHA,” when you mentioned the fewest number of casters use Int. They are items trying to increase the benefit of using classes that rely on underpowered, underutilized stats. Giving a character 29 Str affects the game mechanically significantly less than giving a character a 29 in Dex. I admit they are no brainers to add in as they are obvious voids, but it’s likely due to the abilities themselves being unbalanced to begin with.

More than items, I'd love to see some of the pile of classes/prestige classes come into 5e as subclasses. Geometer, Master Thrower, Ur Priest, Sacred Fist, Vigilante, Acolyte of the Skin, Blood Magus, Fatespinner, True Necromancer, Fochlucan Lyrist, Mindbender, Effigy Master, Entropomancer, Malconvoker, Rage Mage... need I go on?

The whole item enchantment thing does exist in 5th edition, you just have to go onto the Dungeon Master's Guild to find it. I've bought a few different works off of there that cover it, including "Ghesh's Guide to Making Things," "The Complete Armorer's Handbook," "Esquiel's Guide to Magic Weapons," "Xanathar's Extraordinary Vault," "101 Curses for Magic Items," and "Expanded and Exotic Weapons." Together these works should give you all the rules you need to customize your magic items to your heart's content.

Can you also do Pathfinder? I remember seeing the blinkback belt in CR and found out it came from Pathfinder since they transferred over to 5e. I bet there's some good items there.

It's worth noting about your last point that there is a 6 magic items in 5e that can increase each ability score by 2. Strength: Manual of Gainful Excercise Dexterity: Manual of Quickness of Action Constitution: Manual of Bodily Health Intelligence: Tome of Clear Thought Wisdom: Tome of Understanding Charisma: Tome of Leadership and Influence What's also cool is that they each increase your score by 2 and the maximum by 2 so you could get 22 in any ability score if you use them right. Or even 26 if you're a level 20 Barbarian.

Its a permanent increase and then the book isn't magical, so its less of a magic item. Also those existed in 3.5e, so they didn't make it on this list

I believe he was thinking along the lines of the Headband of Intellect where it set your stat to a specific number while attuned and wearing it.

And these are only the items wotc has made for us. In the dmg there is a table for creating magic items depending on what they do. Like casting a lvl 6 fireball 3 times pr day, all spells/feats/supernatural/etc abilities can be tied into magic items to make your character unique, and its not like "cast infinite finger of death pr day on an ioun stond" since the more crazy stuff quickly hits godly prices. But the magic items are balanced out to match the magical beings in the worlds

Belt of Magnificent: increases ability scores and cap by +2; +4; or +6 But don't think any DM would allow it.

... technically yes, but the whip was terrible in 3.5 so you wouldn't. The only use I could find for a whip in 3.5 was to play a nercomancer type character and enchant it to deal negative energy damage, then whip your undead minions to heal them. Even then you'd have to waste a feat on exotic weapon proficiency.

The survival puch is basicly just a way better reusable Robe of Useful Items. I think the Robe of Useful Items is way cooler in it's design. So I would instead just buff that item either by change the patches and/or increase the quantity of them.

We desperately need magic items specifically for Monks just in general. Their inability to take advantage of loot as well as their teammates is one of the main reasons Monks can often begin to fall off towards higher levels. Items like spiked gauntlets to enhance unarmed strikes, monastic belts of varying levels to enhance martial abilities or Ki, or maybe even a unique robe worn by a legendary monk which he left behind when he transcended this mortal plane or something would be highly welcome to non-Kensei Monks looking to keep pace with that Fighter that just got a Flame Tongue.

Don’t really have much reference with 3e because I made a character for it but never really played. Anyways I think I agree with the number one for all but Dex =19 because of how powerful Dex can be. Like if you are gonna put it in a game it would have to be almost a one of a kind item considering how much Dex does in 5e. Totally down though for having an item for all the other stats though

IDK the thing is that wizards is really good at bringing over magic items from older editions and then just nerfing them into oblivion. the sword of sharpness went from a seriously cool magic item, to kind of a joke with huge anti-synergy's, and a big scary 1/400 chance of procing it's core feature, also apparently it's still somehow a ultra rare magic item lol. sovereign glue is now a legendary item, meaning that even though it's really fun to be creative with, it's cost and rarity mean that it's incredibly unlikely to find, and if your DM allows you to buy it for the suggested price none of the proposed uses are really worth the asking price

One of the first calls made after diving into 5e was remove attunement requirements for anything lower than legendary. The half baked attempt at balance using this attunement rule seemed just that, half baked. I see that not wanting the Mandarin from Marvel running around with two fist full of rings, but limiting how many magic items a player can have and utilize is a DM’s sole call.
