They had to roll for everything and kept failing. Pissed all over himself. Druid tried to kick him and got his leg stuck in the mud and fell down. DMs who do this are just looking for opportunities to punish you. I played a game where i had done something to upset the Dm. So when we were going into a sewer, and they made me roll to go down the ladder, I ended up rolling low, and so they described my character falling in and literally eating a huge shit.

These type of DMs also love to introduce critical failures to everything that normally doesn't have them. Of course, the enemy NPCs never slip and stab their friends. Nonono.
@mars7304
@mars7304 5 ай бұрын
At that point just call them out. They're actively making the game one-sided because every action you take has to not only be approved by the DM (Bad DMs make stuff up to keep players under control all the time), but then it ALSO has to succeed the RNG dice-check to bail them out of acknowledging any decision you could make. These guys just want to shove their cool NPCs down your throat and play wargames against the players.
@tallonaseves5841
@tallonaseves5841 5 ай бұрын
Well, I think that’s one of the groups that do that. The other main reason that DMs do it is when they’re afraid to just take hold of the reins and dictate reality. It can be scary for new DMs to wield the power they have over the world of their game. They feel unqualified to just say “that happens” and move on because they feel like they have to game-ify every aspect of the session.

The rolling for every sentence thing reminds me of a dm I had once. Basically we were infiltrating some place and a guard noticed me after I failed a stealth check. I tried to convince him I belonged here and I was asked to roll for deception. But then the dm made the guard absolutely riddle me with questions and every time I had to tell a new lie he made me roll for deception again. We were like 7 rolls deep before I finally failed and ofcourse the guard then immediately tried to arrest me, no further questions asked. Turns out he had some big escape scene planned, and it was admittedly pretty cool, but railroading should be at the very least subtle lol.

@kotlolish
@kotlolish 5 ай бұрын
I still do this as a "fairly new DM" But only for opening doors I know something is dangerous behind it like dungeons. I got chewed out on a different comment for doing this, but in reality.. I just wanted to stop my sorcerer from opening random doors in a dungeon by themselves...so the strength checks were a good way to dissuade them and get others to help. These days the door rolling mechanic is still in place but only for heavy doors for abit of tension. Since they learned in dungeons: "Try to check for things behind the door 1st." Still better then "Congrats you just opened the door to 6 guards who will most likely outspeed and murder this sorcerer in 1 turn" (though said Sorcerer DID in their 1st battle run ahead and got critted by bandits and went down, didn't die.. but it did teach them to stay behind allies in battle wich they do. But atleast allies were in walking distance not 3 turns away.)
@hobblesgames9376
@hobblesgames9376 5 ай бұрын
Well I do rolls for anything that could REASOMABLY fail. Opening a door is easy and should work everytime, kicking a door down requires strength so str roll. Now a fail for that doesn't do anything and a crit fail is a sore ankle for flavor but doesn't affect anything (although I've had players ask if it could). It's all about being reasonable with expectations and outcomes. Also trust between you and the DM that they aren't trying to hurt you. Plus it's important everyone understands how the game will be run and if that isn't their play style just talk to the dm. :)
@hobblesgames9376
@hobblesgames9376 5 ай бұрын
@@kotlolishI'll be honest, that's pretty excessive. If the door is heavy that's one thing, but dont set up the heavy doors just to protect the players or prevent an action. What you were doing is essentially railroading and preventing players from making choices, even if they are bad choices.If they want to split up that's their choice as a player, if something bad happens as a result, that is a consequence to those actions. Now if I know there's a tripwire on the door, I might give them a perception check to see if they feel the tension of the wire as they are opening it, If not, they get hit with the trap. Let the natural consequences teach them, not arbitrary rolls. Think about it from their perspective playing a game where you can choose to try damn near anything. "I want to sneak into the next room cuz my character isn't attached to the party yet and he's always scouting ahead". Instead he's met with "well you have to have help from the party to progress cuz this door is heavy" it's no longer about the players character or their choices Not trying to bash you, just genuinely help you improve.

Had a monkey paw (bird claw for flavor) with one wish left. Also had an elemental stone (my character was an earth genasi stolen away from his family by the church) he got from an elemental commune. I used the wish to fuse the stone and its connections to his ancestry to his soul, turning my character into a Zaratan named "The Great Basalt" that I got to control and curbstomp Baphomet with before he became an NPC that roams around with the Prison on his back. ❤️ He's currently a floating island, and none of it would be possible had my DM gone "yeah can you roll to see if youd be wise enough to come up with that? I'll sometimes ask for rolls that have no actual effect on the success of an action but will determine how the success happens. This is usually just for humor and description. Unfortunately, by the time I changed, my players who were mostly first time players had already gotten bored and quit. I'm starting up a new campaign though, and I'm really excited for it, plus it's with a group I've been in for a while as a player so they all know what they're doing and there's not as much pressure cuz they'll have fun just hanging out no matter how much I screw it up

I allow player ingenuity to circumvent dice. If they come up with a plan that lines up according to previous rolls and strategy, they don’t even have to roll for the plan outcome, it automatically succeeds (or at least lowers the DC of that outcome). This helps get them more actively involved than just chucking the mathrocks.

I use a fair number of unnecessary rolls, but for those rolls failure is more like mildly silly success, and success is cool badassery success. Also helps give players something to do when all their desired actions are extremely mundane. You wanna roleplay shopping for clothes? Well suddenly changing room checks are a thing. But, conversely, if we are fighting a dragon in the ruins of an ancient kingdom you obviously don't need to roll to rip that damaged door off its hinges if you have 18 STR and are currently raging. I kind of view it like keeping the players' path interactive, so what I make them roll for depends on what is available to create an interaction out of. Mundane event, mundane rolls. Epic event, epic rolls.

This is also why i love the concept of "take 10" in pathfinder, say i have a climb of +15, as long as I'm not in combat if the DC of the climb is 25 or less i can just make it with 0 rolls, and it prevents this sort of thing all together (also you cannot crit fail skills)

I went with the easy rules of: If they're not under pressure, and their passive in the stat passes, then they pass. Passives start at 10 plus whatever bonuses they have in the skill (which I'm only going to bother looking up if it's something they shouldn't know I'm rolling for), so anything DC 10 or lower is an auto-pass. You know, like the book says (but most people don't seem to know all skills have passives, not just perception) I have had them roll to break down a door, though it was specifically a bandit hideout's door with an alarm spell linked to the other side. A success would be they break down the door, a failure would be they break down the door but it was louder than expected or took longer or stumble into the room (triggering the alarm) or something that might be inconvenient to the situation but isn't directly harmful.

As a GM it is up to u to decide when and where a player rolls for their character and if u care about pacing it can be one of the biggest contributing factors to player engagement. I refer to this as Micro/Macro storytelling - micro storytelling: important for things like combat and moments where decisions are important. Also for significant/intimate conversations > downside takes up a lot of game time - macro zoom: u can gloss over most conversations and make assumptions on the players behalf without any rolls for the sake of brevity. Most GMs are so zoomed in all the time and want to make every decision important that they forget this is an option. How do the party get to the tavern? Doesn't matter, they get there. Whats the general store like? Doesnt matter, the players just want rations. Macro checks are also great to make a player who built there character for a specific purpose feel great. If the rogue makes a stealth cheak to infiltrate a fotress u could make it a exhausting anciety inducing experience where every choice may lead to death, or u can assume from their one successful roll they made all the right decsions until the most critical junctions > downside: less intimate, more likely to miss opportunities to add atmosphere. Its okay to assume the big bad barbarian intimidates the child, or that the Ranger wins a fight against a bear, or that the Rogue blends into a seedy neighbourhood without a long line of questions and rolls to explain how their character does character things
