Can you tell what the Prisoner's Dilemma is? :^>
@robinbernardinis3 жыл бұрын
@@k4r4k0 The original Prisoner's Dilemma involves a pair of criminals arrested for a crime they committed together, despite there being no conclusive evidence. They are kept in secret cells and interrogated, and both are offered a chance to rat the other out. If they both do, then they will both serve 2 years in prison. If neither does, they will both serve 1 year in prison. If only one of them accuses the other, then the accuser is free to go but the other one has to serve 3 years in prison. The Dilemma is such because the best choice collectively is not to accuse the other, because accusing always results in more total years in prison (1+1 < 3+0 < 2+2), but whatever the other person does, each prisoner can save themselves 1 year of prison by accusing the other.

This is a beautiful moment and I do like the ending, but people talk about this like Brennan is upping the stakes but honestly it kinda seems like this moment diffuses some of the tension that had been building up. Like, they were ready to fight here, Lou was tracking Cinnamon’s hit points all throughout that fight. I think if Brennan had just said “your mutual enemies are all dead, you see each other across the battlefield, what do you do?” It would’ve gone to combat. But instead, Brennan took them out of the scene for a bit and gamified the conflict, essentially turning it from a “Ruby-Saccharina” conflict to one between Siobhan and Emily, two people who know, trust, and care for each other deeply enough that they are able and willing to play the other’s enemy. Again, I like this moment, but this is a step towards the happy ending they wanted, not away from it.
@rafaelcalmon28583 жыл бұрын
Also, he threw at them a fairly famous dilemma where the best outcome, or at least the most optimal one, is when both choose cooperation rather than conflict. It could have gone either way, but thinking of it as, like Brennan called, a puzzle means he was asking them to solve it like one. And while any combination would give them a solution, only the one they picked would give them the best solution for both characters.
@adibaby963 жыл бұрын
@@rafaelcalmon2858 exactly! And the thing with the prisoner’s dilemma is that it only really works as a dilemma if the people involved don’t actually trust each other fully. Siobhan and Emily are close friends, they would never betray the other one.
@nvk34353 жыл бұрын
@@adibaby96 that is true, but I also think if this season (and this show in general tbh) taught us anything it’s that all of these players are good enough role players to answer truthfully about what their character would do. I do agree that the pause Brennan gave this moment lowered tension rather than raising it, but I also believe that if Siobhan or Emily thought that Ruby or Saccharina would have attacked, they both would have made the honest choice rather than the ‘optimal’ one. But yeah this moment rules whatever you think about it
@adibaby963 жыл бұрын
@@nvk3435that’s a fair point, it’s also worth mentioning that when they were taken out of the scene and presented with the choice, Brennan literally asked them “do you choose to trust or betray?” Essentially laying out the themes of that part of the plot, of trust and betrayal. And I’ll be honest, when I first saw it I thought it was cheap because I thought they had aimed for a happy ending at the expense of being true to the characters. Looking back, though, I think it was maybe even more honest to the characters than if he had just let them do whatever. Because-and maybe this is just my interpretation of the events, but- when they see each other across the battlefield, the themes of trust, betrayal, and family do come to the fore because Ruby and Saccharina saw what war and grief had turned them into: paranoid, greedy connivers ready to stab their own sister in the back for powers’ sake. They, in that moment, decided what they wanted for themselves.
@devinberry44722 жыл бұрын
@@adibaby96 I 100% agree with you when these characters have lost ALOT thought the season especially Ruby. The WHOLE reason they're having this war is because of everyone's personal greed: Cruller's wants for ruling Candia, Plumbeline's hunger for the throne, etc. Everyone was seeking their own personal wants and needs and it led to more and more suffering and pain for everyone. I do think Ruby would be fucking tired of fighting and killing and death and Saccharina spent the battle attacking the armies but always specifically let people take out their own vendettas and specifically trying not to kill those who people had personal vendettas with. She asked several times if she was going to kill Ciabatta or Keradin with certain attacks and only did so when Brennan said the attack wouldn't kill them. I think both characters would have realized that this whole war is caused by people trying to betray each other and doing conniving shit in the interests of self interests and would look at all the death and devastation it caused and when given the opportunity to betray the other person would realize that would just be continuing the cycle.
@placeholderblankspace3 жыл бұрын
What really bewilders me is how both of them chose to stay silent (in the words of the Prisoner's Dilemma) than confess, when, as Brennan pointed out, the theoretical right choice is to confess. It's always an interesting thing, because whenever someone chooses to stay silent than confess in a PD it really means they care more for the other person than themselves, effectively.
@rafaelcalmon28583 жыл бұрын
This is where the genius of how Brennan played it comes out. When faced with the prisoner's dilemma, people that have developed positive relationships with each other kind of tend toward mutual cooperation even before they start considering outcomes and options. Knowing that, he asked the players themselves to consider what the other person's character would do and factor it into their own character's choice. Setting up this special mood and making them take a step back from the game probably tipped the scales a considerable bit towards cooperation, and I really believe Brennan was counting on that. It was a smooth play.
@HidingSleeper3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it means that they care for the other. I think it means more that they realize co-operation in that instance has the better chance of reduced consequences or to avoid them entirely.
@jackwilliams10392 жыл бұрын
Well morality is in play in the situation, if one struck while the other came to understand, that character would realize that they were a monster, and be struck back mentally. There was backlash to all choices but cooperation because of that.
@devinberry44722 жыл бұрын
@@HidingSleeper I always saw it is both characters see a battlefield full of people dead specifically because they betrayed people for their own self interests and they would realize "If I kill this person it's just continueing the cycle. Amathar was betrayed by Cruller nearly killing him and Jet and Ruby were betrayed by Ciabatta which lead to Jet's actual death. By framing this choice as "Do you want to kill the other person who may not try and kill you?" I got supper immersed in Crown of Candy, and especially Ruby. Saccharina really showed up in that mountain moment with everything perfect about her, she was the answer to all their questions, and I felt Ruby’s pain and loathing in my bones. Not at Saccharina as a person, but at every circumstance around her - her magic, her aspirations, her men, the way she acted (it honestly would’ve been less hard if she was colder, no pun intended). And I’m so sure that if Jet was there when they got to that mountain lair, it all would’ve been different - Jet for sure would’ve been the first to adore their new cool big sister, the first to bicker with Swifty, to make Saccharina a part of their family, and Ruby would’ve been right beside her. But the version of Ruby that actually arrived had no room for love in her soul, and Saccharina had, if we are fair, no need in Ruby but for her love. And at the end of battle, the very moment, the second Ruby was free from her burden, there was no way she’d attack. Because the jet-black darkness never asked for Saccharina’s blood. Because, as she just said to her enemy, there is strength in sweetness, and Ruby is sweet. The time of revenge and fear was over. She lost one big sister, it would be against everything she fought for to kill another one. So, while I was very sure that Ruby won’t attack, I wasn’t so sure about Saccharina. I got a feeling she doesn’t want to, but there was a chance she actually gave up on Ruby and Amethar.

ThereFORE, Amethar could not be king of Candia, because he could not enter into a legal marriage with Caremellinda. Saccharina is the legal, rightful heir of Candia as she is the daughter of Amethar's first wife. So the crown should have passed to her. HOWEVER, it was also found out that Amethar's first wife had died merely five days before Amethar and Caramellinda married; therefore, Amethar was in fact rightful king and Ruby is the princess again. This whole conflict is born because Amethar, Ruby and Caramellinda chose to keep this a secret, further driving a wedge between the House of Rocks and Saccharina, as Saccharina found out the truth later. There's no way Brennan didn't absolutely know the outcome of this dilemma - I felt zero tension during this. Loved Crown of Candy, though. There's literally nothing to gain from this conflict for Emily or Siobhan in attacking.
@Kantilvih3 жыл бұрын
Emily had a kingdom on the one side and a family she has spent all of two days with on the other. Id say there was something to gain/lose for her. The season was set up for game of thrones shit, and she was john snow if john snow had been introduced in season 8.

Honestly was there drama happening outside of the game between these 2? It feels like there was. But I could be wrong maybe theyre just fantastic actors

IIRC they both got way too invested in the battle and trying to kill each other's characters so there was genuine tension at the table, Brennan came up with this to diffuse the situation and get everyone back on the same page

The issue with the dilemma here was that there was no downside presented for choosing to cooperate. "You can either stab each other and risk your life, or "understand" each other." Why would you ever choose to risk your life?
@TheSoulGambit Жыл бұрын
I suppose my question then would be: why do you think that's an issue? I think that's the whole point. Why risk their lives at all? They've just had this huge battle risking their lives over what? Now they get a single opportunity to either continue empty violence, or take a moment to consider if their fighting is actually worth it. That's the whole point, that's what choosing to "understand" means; to understand that it's crazy for us to each be risking our lives like this.

@@OneofOne316 this a very serious moment and not meant to be funny. Both characters appear to have long standing animosity towards each other. This created an intense, dramatic moment, where they could have possibly tried to kill each other in game. The DM used that situation to give the players a chance to resolve the conflict. Out of game, all these people are friends & co-workers. But D&D is a game with heavy player investment. If either character killed the other, it runs the risk of spoiling their actual friendship. What Brennan did here was a highly calculated move. He presented them each the options of: - seek understanding Or - kill the other. This is a moral puzzle. If they chose to fight, it would be a fair duel on their own terms. If they chose to understand each other, the create the opportunity for their characters to resolve their conflict in a non-violent manner. However, the trick is this: If only one of them chooses to attack, while the other chooses to understand, then the aggressor would successfully kill the other. Brennan played it smart, and very carefully explained how the puzzle works. He knew his players, understood them as individuals, and took the time to subtlely remind them of what was at stake, while also allowing them to be true to themselves & their characters. In the end, both players appeared to choose understanding. No one died, and now they can start the healing process in game. Both mentally and literally

The truth is Brennan couldn’t help but guide them to the decision to make peace. Using rhetoric like “you can choose to truly see the other person” made it difficult for them to choose war. He could’ve used less biased language.
