DMR is marketed so well . Makes it seem like they auto connect to the closest repeater and then you can easily talk to anyone. It's actually extremely difficult to get started. I don't think DMR is finished developing. Too complex for the average guy IMO

part of the problem is the lack of good quality and accurate documentation and instructions, I read many articles that are either so out of date they are useless or they are simply innacurate and incomplete, even when it comes to clearly explaining the basics

Ron, Thanks for a great video on a difficult topic. I'm an engineer and licensed ham with a Retevis radio I'm trying to get working for a group around my state. I'm going to program it successfully, then make detailed procedures to program for each local area. This programming is not for everyone. It is beyond what most people want to do. But I will assign a sysadmin in each region to program everyone's radio locally. You did a great job, which my notes will cross over to my Retevis radio programming interface. I loved how you worked through every problem undeterred. One of the things that struck me, especially when reading others' comments, is that this was mostly verbal/serial instruction. If there were a graphic or two explaining with a map of the channel, labels, packet structure and a block diagram for the terminology, it would strike a chord with all of us "visual-spatial" learners. Maybe show a couple of graphics up front before the nuts and bolts.

I’m LOL’ing so hard right now reading the commentary about disappointment with the absurd complexities of DMR. Add me to that mix. We need to setup an open , turnkey network. DMR is the Java of radio comms. Hats off to anyone who managed to deploy this tech in the wild before it went mainstream. HK isn’t a city in China, btw 😂. Regardless, thanks a ton for taking the time to make these demos.

Something I learned from another ham about dmr that no one seems to mention in their videos, when you key up a repeater, you have to kerchunk it the first time to get it to see you. Then you can transmit to it after you get the acknowledgement on your radio. There is also a delay with dmr, so key up, pause for 2 seconds then transmit. Same at the end so it doesn't cut your transmission off short. There will be a delay in dmr conversations because of the pauses in the system.

Actually... forgttetting to add the channel to the zone... was pretty instructive... I actually caught it... and when you explained it... I was telling myself "golly I'm starting to understand this". Another thing you said that I realized was causing me problems *last night* was that you have to disconnect the computer cable to hear any audio. I was seeing lights flash... I could hear myself on brandmeister's hoseline... but no audio from the radio... good thing to emphasize. If you compress this, don't leave that out.

I just figured out that every time y'all make one these videos you are adding an extra step. You don't need to add a TG into your Zone to be able to talk to any TG. Once you are connected to the digital repeater all you have to do is select which TG you want to join by selecting "List" then scrolling through. I've never seen this displayed on any video from any source.

Okay, DMR... No problem for one repeater or a pi what ever. BUT, the problem arises when you travel. When you are home you have the parrot, the disconnect and about 8 other TG's or private entries in a zone. The system is so happy. You open that zone, change the "channel" and key down. Voila, you're talking. Now comes the hard part. You want to add 72 more digital repeaters and be able to seamlessly talk to all your peeps when you travel near one of these repeaters. Sure you can simply add the repeater and then select said repeater, click list then select the contact but you're way to lazy for that. You just want to select the zone, (repeater) then channel over to the contact that you put in the zone but alas you must do this for every single repeater. How in the how and without the help of The Apple Dumpling Gang can we make this mucho ezeeo?

You need to have a Windows Based Tablet computer with you. These are commercial radios that are being used in the ham world. Having a computer to program them makes things so much easier. That being said, you can still program and add channels 'on the fly' from the front panel of the radio.

I bought my radio from a local HRO, but you guys have way better videos, download section and support. The only version of CPS I found on Powerwerx was for firmware 3.03 (latest as of today), but that DID NOT WORK since my radio was on 3.01 FW. Not sure why Powerwerx is involved in the 878, maybe they are the importer? Their image came up on screen when booting and they had a firmware warning flyer included in box. Anyway, had to download a 3.01 version from you guys and now I can finally program my radio via the factory CPS. Also tried RD Systems 878 CPS and it was working fine more or less but it can't flash firmware to my knowledge.

Another great video on how to can program your DMR right from the start. Thanks Ron! Just a quick question? From the RepeaterBook page of this repeater you programmed in the radio, I see since it Brandmeister you can use all the Brandmeister TG's, on this page there is also "Open TalkGroup View" In this menu there are 6 TG's Local/Cluster TG 2, Local or Reflector TG 9 and 4 other channels. Are these channels for the BYRG network? I do see these TG's in Brandmeister also! What I'm really not sure of is TG 2 TG 8 Regional and TG 9, what am I connecting to if I put these channels in my radio? Thanks again, great job!

After watching your video twice, using DMR is still confusing. There has to be a more efficient method of locating and connecting to repeaters. Way too many acronyms and abbreviations used to make the video a "quick and efficient" method for connecting to and using DMR. With the video being almost 1.5 hours, too much is covered and by the time the end of the is reached, if viewers were asked to "summarize" the DMR process, most readers would not be able to provide explain the procedure. I am giving up on DMR.

You need to show HOW you key into the various channels, groups, whatever. I have a completely programmed 878 thanks to a very good code plug provided by a friend, and to date the only conversation I've had is with the Parrot on one repeater. All the instructional videos are good, but they are all centered around the computer programming in CPS and not how to actually manipulate the radio!!! Show some screen shots about how to get from point A to point B. All your demo is with you holding the radio and not showing HOW you changed channels, etc.

There is a lot of activity on the local repeater. However, I can't hear anybody. How do I know what slot they are using and what talk group they are in? I have all 20 listed on their website programmed. I'd rather not trial and error it.

Enable your radio's dual time-slot monitoring feature. This will cause it to unmute on all digital traffic. At the same time, it should display the Talk group number and time slot being used. Hope this helps.

@@1500runner357 Yes. I found this feature and have been using it. However, there are also 3-second transmissions coming from the repeater also, with random space between that seem random and I cannot decode.

A GMRS License would only cover radio use over a GMRS Repeater. You would need to get a Technician Class license and a DMR ID to operate on DMR.

I don’t get the appeal for DMR. It’s VOIP but instead of Skype and all the wonders of full duplex + video, you play HAM. I say play because there is nothing RF about it. Sorry, your do radiate between your HT and that other unit that is connected to the internet…wait….doesn’t my iPhone do that using wifi to the router? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️ playing HAM……or what am I missing? Why do I need an FCC license and all this complexity if all I’m doing is Talking vía a box connected to the internet..

Some good information about talk groups, zones, color codes, parrot, and disconnect code. It was a long and painful 1 hour 20min journey to get there, but It did help some. I would not use this as a marketing video for DMR or Bridcomm. Janky execution. I think you can do better. Shorten it to < 20min. Have a camera locked on the screen of the radio where we can see it. Move your studio to somewhere you don’t have to keep walking to the window to demonstrate getting into a repeater. Have a friend on standby ready and waiting in the talk-group so we can see that it works. Have you considered doing a video showing only the radio, computer screen, and maybe a white board with voice over? Just my thoughts…

This is why I'm staying away from DMR, it's just way too complex for what it does. It shouldn't take hours of watching videos, researching, computer programming and complex software just to say "hi" on a repeater. Way too many little gotchas involved with the radio and programming it that will leave you frustrated and the radio dead quiet. I had an 878, spent hours programming channels, zones, talkgroups, slots, codes etc only to have it maybe work half the time and spent twice as long on a computer figuring out why it wasn't working. Maybe it has its place in the commercial market, but for amateur use, it just seems way overly complex to be fun.

@@BridgeComSystemsInc Cool, cool. I'll take this opportunity to warn people that Alinco radios have "Dual slot" as an option, for DMR type, and you might assume that it's the right one for a repeater that communicates on both slots, but it's not, necessarily. The manual doesn't explain what it's for, I never got it to work, and the option I needed all along was plain old "repeater". I would love to know what it is that distinguishes the two options, but the manual does not bother to tell you.
