Tbf, most die hard football fans don’t understand this stuff. This video is more or less for players than fans. But it’s super fun to watch and play along with. I would definitely love to see you guys getting into simple play calling and defensive schemes, maybe not quite on this level though 😂

Just remember, these people have grown up since a kid watching and playing football and they still learn something new all the time. These are fun to watch! Some oversimplified takeaways: one can often tell what kind of defense is to be played pre-snap although the defense can try to disguise it. Quarterbacks can not keep track of every player and movement on the field so it's simplified into "keys" (focuses) and "progressions" (decision steps). Just before the ball is snapped you must make your final judgment based on the defense setup and play-call to the first watch this player, if they do one thing then you throw here, if not then look at this player, and so forth.

Very well said. This, in combination with watching film for your specific opponent to remind yourself the types of things they run, which narrows down your options even more and helps with decision making

The routes Fly route - Straight down the field fast as you can go Flag route - Straight down the field andtoward the flag at the goal line Post route - Down the field a short distance then run toward the goal post Dig - Down field and then an abrupt 45 degree angle crossing the linebackers Button hook - Down field, then an abrupt turn back toward the QB Whip - Down field, quick turn in and a quick turn out toward the sideline Fade - Back corner of the end zone Offensive Formations - T Formation - Full back field directly behind the QB and two half backs on each side of the full back. this was the oldest original formation in football. Ususally had two tight ends. Delawre T - QB and FB in astright line behind one another with the two half backs lining up outside and just behind the tackle. One half back goes in motion before teh snap of the ball toward the QB to provide deception and an additional potential RB at the snap. I Formation - QB, FB, and Tailback are in a straight line behind each other. Used on running plays with a fast elusive tailback. Power I formation - Like the I, but with an extra half back beside the fullback for power running to one side. Wishbone - FB behind the QB, half backs on each side of the FB lie a T formation but a couple of yards back like the wishbone of a turkey. Empty Set - no running back in the backfield Wildcat - Single back or empty set wit lots of motion across the field just before the snap. Trips (short for triple) means three receivers on one side (can be invarious configurations). Twins means two receivers on one side lined up closely together. Slot means there is an outside receiver and a second receiver in the gap between that receiver and teh line of scrimmage. Two (double) tight - Two tight ends (usually for a designed running play that requirs extra blocking) Over balanced line - A line of scrimmage with an extra guard or tackle on one side taken from the other side of the line to assist in power blocking on a running play. Trap play - Less a fomratoin than a movement. A trap play is what it sounds like. When a defense is lined up in such a way that linemen can't get a proper angle on a defensive lineman, an offensive lineman will block a player closer to the ball and let his defensive player through while a guard or tackle from the other side of the line will pull to the first side and using the angle block the defender out of teh way of a running back. Timing is everything on this. Play Action Pass - A pass play desinged to look like a run. Draw play - A running play desinged to look like a pass. Each team has its own names for each of these plays and formations in code so the other team cannot anticipate the play by its name.

One way of looking at it is if the route is "capped." Is there a defender in that deep zone presnap. With the corner down in the flat the deep 1/4 behind him is uncapped so that is where you are looking first on corner route. Now post snap if he bails deep the route is now capped so you come to your next read..

11:26 the corner would be expecting to pass off the receiver to the deep safety in that coverage, so if the safety bites on the dig, the post becomes a pretty easy throw. These reactions are awesome btw!

Depending on the system you play in, some concepts can change a million times over depending upon to most most misiscule detail. Down, distance, weather, stadium, strengths and weakness of an offense or defense, health of the players etc. Quarterbacks are some of the smartest athletes on the planet when it comes to the complexity of the game and making reads.

I played football for seven years, and these were not easy questions. Especially the first two. A "post route" is when the WR lines up out as far as possible and he runs straight, then cuts on an angle and runs toward the goalpost. A "skinny post" is when the WR cuts towards the goalpost but stays outside the hash marks. We used to call a "whip route" a button hook because you would stop running and turn your body towards the QB, then you would run either towards the hashmark or sideline. You guys should look up a receiver "route tree." It might be helpful.

This is far more advanced than the vast majority of fans would understand. It's specifically for people that play quarterback. I'm pretty sure I'm more knowledgeable than most fans but I wouldn't have a clue how to identify coverages based on pre-snap alignments. I know what all the terminology means, but knowing how to actually dissect it on the fly isn't really relevant to most people.

15:20. What is happening is the qb is unsure of the coverage. So he keys on a defender. Its a bit of an educated guess. You look at what would the two defenders would normally do in man or zone. In zone, at the snap, nickel guy would sit on goal line and CB would back up to goal line to both cover their zones. In man the CB will follow closely the slant or short route and nickel will somewhat wait for his man then follow closely. So the CB moves in completely different directions at the snap while the nickel stays somewhat stationary for a moment. That is why you key on the corner.he will instantly tell you man or zone. And the play is designed so only slant is open in zone and corner is open in man. And QB must read it correctly then make the correct throw.....QB is hard. Lol

You don't have to pick a favorite sport. UK football is a different animal with a different set of skills and sensibility--more like basketball and hockey--with give and go plays, back-doors, etc. US football is I think unique with its mix of speed, power, collision, grace, but also hugely complex strategy. Don't be disappointed if you can't see it before it happens--it takes QBs years sometimes to get competent and they have time to go through lower levels of complexity as they learn--grade school, high school, college then pro. And then of course each position has its own knowledge base that it needs to master.

Now to get an idea of what a QB has to go through, do this same thing with hundreds of different plays and over 1000 different scenarios. It's the reason that the best QBs like Brady are doing tens of hours of tape study per week to be prepared for every scenario on every different play.

I love EVERYTHING about this. It's got even my old football brain working like it's 20 years ago all over again. Remember how I once told you guys that the cornerbacks' eyes were among the most important things to notice at any given time on any given play? Probably not, but I love that this dude is confirming. Being a CB was absolutely brutal for that reason among many others. Just another example of us dumb Americans making up dumb soft sports where everyone needs pads and just runs into each other before taking needless breaks amirite 😂

On any given pass play, your quarterback has a progression to go through. You don't make the Quarterback look back and forth like in a schoolyard game, the play is usually designed to go to someone specific. If that primary receiver isn't open, a well designed play will let the QB scan gradually across the field, and see his secondary options (or throw it away, depending on the design). When you want to help a young QB, you'll often have him roll out, and only let him look at that side of the field to make things simpler. You put one receiver short, another at medium depth, and another one deep, hoping the defense doesn't have enough people there to cover them all. You try to put all three receivers in the QBs field of vision, so he doesn't have to look around, he just has to choose the one that's open. When they say high-low, that means you're hoping to hit the deep receiver first. If he's covered, the medium depth. If those are covered, the short one. Low-high means you planned a short play, but if the defense reacts to the short pattern, you have someone lurking over the top.

A post route is a moderate to deep passing route in which a receiver runs 10-20 yards down the field, then cuts toward the middle of the field at a 35-45-degree angle. A skinny post would be where you angle in 10-20 degrees. A "slant" is just a short post - basically go 5 yards and then angle towards the safety. A "go" route is where the receiver runs straight down the field, a "fade" is almost the same thing but the receiver drifts to the sideline. The "In" or "dig" has the receiver make a sharp 90 degree cut, towards the middle of the field, after a specific distance, like 5 or 10 yards. A sharp precise cut helps the receiver get open. "Curl" and "out" routs are generally timing based where the QB reads the coverage and is making the pass right right before the WR is making his cut. Basically the WR turns around and looks for the ball.

On the first one, there is not enough information pre snap to know its cover-2. It could easily be cover-1. It could also be cover-3. This is a gross oversimplification.
@chonzen1764
@chonzen1764 6 ай бұрын
Its a presnap read. You aren't conclusively saying its cover-2. The defense can always roll to a different coverage. But cover 2 is the most likely and alos best defense given their presnap alignment. It could be cover 1 but the leverage of the defenders is not good for man. It could be cover 3 but again its going to be hard for that safety to roll to deep 3rds from that alignment. While not shown this Ohio concept isn't great against cover 3. So on the backside often you have something threatening that opposite seem. If they try and roll the above alignment to cover 3 great! With the FS so far outside the hash whatever you have coming down the opposite seem vert, skinny post is money. When you try and hide your coverage you are giving up something because you are not in as good of a position presnap than if you just ran the coverage straight up.
