This tip comes a little late for me. 😂 I spent about $400 on the Leigh D4 Dovetail Jig so I could build a cradle for my son, using beautiful dovetails. He outgrew the cradle in a few weeks and will be 24 tomorrow. I haven't used that Leigh Jig ever since! (But I have great plans to use it!) But hey StumpyJames, thanks for another great video. I've been a fan for decades. I DO miss the old, tongue-in-cheek sarcasm from way back, but I understand that the world has changed. Keep up the excellent work, and wishing you the best with your continued success.

After 35 years practice I'm pretty good at splitting a pencil line with a Japanese saw, but I still dislike chopping the waste away from the pin board; your router jig will make that removal much quicker and more accurate; thanks!

Thanks, that looks far easier than setting up the expensive dovetail jig that I bought and is gathering dust in my workshop because it is too fiddly to use for one off projects. I reckon that I could make your jig in and set it up in about a quarter of the time that it takes to set up the one that I bought.

i've been impressed with your videos after browsing them the last few days. as a woodworker in industry, i gotta say i've done many things with a trim router outside of its normal usage and i can say fairly authoritatively that a 1/4 hp router just isn't up to the task of that much milling for very long.

Very slick, Jim. I think Glen Huey published a similar method for through-dovetails in Popular Woodworking quite a ways back. In his method, you created a template which bore a resemblance to fingers on the end of a board, the width of which matched the width of the drawers you were making. He recommended making the template using a dado stack on your table saw! Then make the pins using a dovetail bit and the template, and a bandsaw to make the tails. Unless one plans to make a LOT of the same size dovetail joints, your method is far simpler. Thank you.

Actually, dovetailing pine offers distinct challenges. The fibers crush if your tools aren't very sharp, and it's easy to bruise, leaving gaps in the joint.

I have a question hoping you can answer. I don't want to name drop so not sure how to proceed, but I saw a youtuber use some sort of jig to turn a table saw into a jointer. I love your safety videos and all your detailed explanations. My husband and I just started and we realize now all the stupid mistakes we made. I saw in one of your videos how you talked about using the table saw for only even pieces and using a jointer prior to table saw use. This other video was intriguing due to costs of extra machinery, it looked sus, but I'm obviously a beginner. I could post the video or a name or title if you have the time to view it? Maybe could be another safety video in the works.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs Жыл бұрын
Jointing on the table saw is usually restricted to edges, and the crooked board is usually not passed between the fence and the blade, which could lead to a kickback. This type of jointing with a table saw is safe: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j92FnNt0qs2uk58.html If you use this process to joint edges, and use a sled and a thickness planer to joint the surfaces, you could get by without a dedicated jointer. But it will take longer and more effort to prepare many boards for larger projects.

@@StumpyNubs Interesting, In Germany we lern to cot the pins first and trace the tails
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs Жыл бұрын
American-style dovetails often feature very narrow pins, leaving little space between the tails for tracing them onto the pins board. So the pins are often cut first. But there is no single right/wrong way to do it.

No No No No No, just learn to cut them by hand. It’s not that hard and the satisfaction you get from hand cut dovetails will never be equaled by any semi-machine cut dovetails. Do it the old way, the right way!
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs Жыл бұрын
LOL- many people only cut dovetails once every few years, at the most. To suggest they must learn and maintain those skills through such little use is not realistic, nor is it true that a machine cut dovetail "will never be equal" to a hand cut one. There is no single "right way" to cut dovetails. The results are what matter. And there are ways (such as shown in this video) to create dovetails with power tools that look and function exactly like one that is hand cut. There is literally no difference, despite what elitists want people to think. And this is coming from someone who has cut PLENTY of dovetails by hand/
@patrickhotra9241
@patrickhotra9241 Жыл бұрын
If they look like they are hand cut, and they are not you are offering a piece of work that's a fraud. Hand cut dovetails require time, patience, and a degree of hand tool skill that must be earned, and that is what you are showcasing. Blurring the line between hand cut and machine cut can lead to customers not knowing the difference, and not caring. I've cut over 4,000 by hand, and had to learn all of the associated skills needed to maintain the tools. I've also seen finished work with machine cut dovetails advertised as "museum quality". I'd rather see you encourage hand tool skills to produce these.
