Thank you for your comment, Abbas! This sentence is quite tricky because it mixes a lot of the things I teach in the video. To be technically accurate and anal, it only refers to a true probably fact because DIDN'T SLEEP is a SIMPLE PAST INDICATIVE due to the presence of LAST NIGHT 😉

Thanks! And that's a very good question! My own accent is a whole topic in its own right haha, in the sense that it really varies based on how I'm feeling, the situation, how tired I am and, most importantly, who I'm talking to. What doesn't change is my enunciation: I always pronounce everything very clearly and, funnily enough, my KZfaq videos are the one situation where I enunciate the LEAST. I notice it all the time when I watch them back while I edit them. My videos are not natural in that everything I say is carefully scripted because I want to give you the maximum knowledge with the maximum clarity of explanation; but at the same time, I want to use advanced and fairly fast English as I target advanced speakers/teachers. All of this puts me under quite a bit of pressure when I record and it shows through the fact that sometimes I swallow sounds ever so slightly or I keep them a little bit shorter than I should. I would never do that in real life, but the pressure does take its toll on me. And although I enunciate everything in real life, I naturally speak very fast, much faster than on KZfaq, and that, too, gets to me as I'm always trying to strike the right balance between my natural superspeed, the very slow pace that most videos use but I don't want, and the mid-advanced pace that I do want so I can challenge my followers without letting it become detrimental to comprehension. My most natural accent is very annoyingly on the posh side, and I know it's extremely off-putting and not friendly at all. And even that is a bit of an issue for my videos because I do want to give you the best English I have, but I don't want to sound too stuck-up and unfriendly. When I used to teach students, my accent would automatically switch to a friendlier one to create rapport. In my everyday life, it depends. If I meet someone for the first time, my accent goes friendlier again, but if I am around my solid friends, I might dip into my more posh one because I know they know me and won't be put off by it (although they do mock me for it haha)

@@EnglogicSam I had realized that you spoke slower for the benefit of clarity. However, it doesn’t make you sound foreign, it’s natural in that sense from my perspective. Even your neck muscles move as you speak! I also know you’re an actor which probably means that you have had a voice coach. Posh is good, but I can see how you may have to adapt a little to establish rapport with your students. It’s so interesting that you’re able to change accents though. @@Mr.S65 Oh wow! I'd never even paid attention to my neck muscles! Yes, my accent can get me into trouble sometimes. When I was younger and did trial shifts as a waiter, some of the other staff instantly didn't like me purely because of how I speak haha As for my American accent, that was a whole journey in its own right. Let me lead off by saying that I'm not entirely sure the few bits of American I use in the videos are 100% native because I'm out of practice, but it's great that they sound so to you :) I'll be 100% honest: I much prefer British to American, but as an actor it's a great skill to have, so when I was trying to be one, I decided to shoot a scene of my showreel (a selection of clips that we use as our CV) in American, meaning that I had to learn it, although I did not enjoy the idea of it in the slightest. But as a pronunciation teacher myself, I loved studying all the subtle differences that we have, especially those that not even I would ever have noticed if an American accent coach hadn't pointed them out. And I love(d) the fact that now I can spot a fake American accent a mile away based exactly on those same little nuances. Also, when I watch films, if an actor makes one single little mistake (that no one would ever pay attention to), I hear it immediately and then know they are not American (or British if that is the accent they are going for). If you want to see an actress who's great at accents, watch ORPHAN BLACK. The main character is Canadian but she plays several clones of herself, the main one being from London and the others American. She is so good you'd think she's British putting on an American accent, but it's the other way around. BUT in the whole series there was this one word she mispronounced and still to this day I remember it. She said 'PATENTED' with /æ/, which is the American version. It's also possible in British, but we would only really say /eɪ/, so it sounded jarring to me. By that point I already knew she wasn't English anyway, but it really stuck with me. Again, it's not a terrible thing because it does exist in British, but it's not common. When I learnt all the rules, I decided to speak only American for the whole month leading up to the shoot. I never spoke a word of British on my own, with my friends or with new people. And as much as I originally disliked American, it became infectious and I really liked being able to do it! Everyone I met thought I was American! BUT (and I should probably make a video on this somehow) I don't think I ever spoke to Americans. I spoke and fooled foreigners or Brits and that is NOT a good benchmark. The fact that I fooled them doesn't mean I sounded like a native, because it's much easier to fool non-natives. Only when natives believe you are one of them should you believe that you've made it. But I would have loved to know what a real American would think of my accent. I was very confident about it and I wasn't nervous about it at all on the shooting day, but when I watched it back, I could clearly tell I wasn't American and I was gutted about it. I guess the nerves of the whole situation did get the getter of me without me realising. But hey, it was too late. But it was a much more thrilling experience than I thought!

It does but it's very unusual. It means that yesterday she looked like she had known the solution to something the say before, and this context is a bit rare. Also, KNOW rarely uses the perfect aspect
