Oi G'day,
James Prime here.
I like hearing other people from around the world attempt the American accent. Since I'm in Australia at the moment, I figured why not make a video about it? So that's what I did! Thanks to everyone who participated in the video!
Here are some time stamps that may or may not be useful:

This is because there is no such thing as an “American Accent” scientifically speaking. It is simply the lack of an accent. Every other English speaking country is the one with the accent. That’s why when you sing really loud or yell in English you sound American because you have no choice but to sound as natural as possible
@piranhaplantX
@piranhaplantX 4 жыл бұрын
@@c_lowe15 This is incorrect. The reason everyone sounds American is due to how much syllables are stressed and elongated while singing. So you lose a lot of the finer details you get from most regional accents. Which just happens to be how the general American accent sounds, since it's very neutral and straightforward.

For those of you that keep commenting that there is more than one “American” accent and are confused about which accent I’m talking about. Yes I know there are dozens of accents in the US. But the thing is if you actually go to Australia and have a conversation with someone from there, it doesn’t matter which “accent” you have. They see all of them as the same “American” accent. You could be from the The south, east coast, west coast or the best place of all, the Midwest. It doesn’t matter, all of those accents still fall under the “American accent” category. For those of you that are getting too caught up in the, “ThIs ViDeO dOeSnT mAkE sEnSE bEcAuSe tHeRe aRe DoZeNs oF aMeRiCaN aCcEnTs!!!!.” Imagine if an Australian came to the US and you started talking to them. You would just recognize that they had an Australian accent. You wouldn’t say, “ oh you have an east coast Australian accent mixed in with a little bit of mid eastern Newcastle flow.” No. You would just say, “Australian accent.”

The thing is the southern American accent and Northern American accent sound completely different while people from different parts of Australia are all using a variation of cockney. It's really not the same. If they can't hear the difference that's honestly weird. Or can they here it and just call them both American accents?. I get that they are all American accents but it is confusing to an American we aren't a tiny island like england or mostly desert like Australia. We are as big as Europe. We have 400 million documented citizens not counting undocumented ones. Australia as 26 mil. It's like comparing Madagascar to all of southern Africa. Your saying the Americans are getting confused but that's because we don't even slightly understand the lens other countries puts on America because we are all so different and our country is huge for being part of the English empire. It'd be more accurate to compare a single state to a country like Australia with such a small population. Also in America we are big on not grouping people together who don't want to be. Aka Yankee and southern Americans haha. A city boy in Australia vs someone on the outback is a huge difference in accent. That's the same in America. In ever single state. Not just the whole country haha. Btw I'm not upset or anything we just like to share our culture and well correct people if they are looking at it the wrong way haha. We aren't shy

James Prime Dozens? I can only pick out like 6 American accents... shows what I know, lol. I think he's thinking of the stereotypical Emily-Richard-Gilmore-Transatlantic accent. The one that we associate with posh elocution, but actually was adopted because its nasally as hell and punched through shitty radios during the early to mid 20th century. It became synonymous, through the radio and theatre, as the accent of "important" people, so, it just kind of hung around, even though it's actually a mutt dialect that's sonically the worse of both the New England and British accent. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdamkqyctMW-cok.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLKEYLaCuqi2dKs.html This is what foreigners think a Transatlantic accent sounds like, because actors, like Cary Grant, used a Transatlantic accent and Cary Grant was sexy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o56crdySssCRnXU.html This is what the Transatlantic sounds like when the guy on the street uses it: Ever heard of Inspector Gadget? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bs1pqa9ilqm2lWw.html

@@IAm-qf2xb yes, I agree. But that hard New York accent is a Italian dialect. Yiddish sounds closer to German. In Pennsylvania many of the Jews did speak Yiddish as the crown heights neighborhood. But it was abondoned about 100 years ago, as was German. Most Pennsylvanians spoke German and had German schools. What I am saying is those ethnicities in those regions shaped the overall accent. Crown Heights citizens keep to themsleves. It has to be a widespread population to shape the language.

As an Australian(that’s spent 3 week in the states before) I find that we have a similar accent to Texans just because of the slang and we sound completely different to brits but I can tell how it can be confused Also my personally opinion of the American accent it does sound very extra, I have a vivid memory of overhearing a girl talking to her mother while walking in LA and to me she sounded her up herself and demanding but it was completely different to the accents I heard everywhere else!

Brooke :/ when I first got to Australia I had hard time separating the Australian accent vs the British accent. Some Australians have a really soft accent that makes them sound almost British. She just sounded like British person who grew up in the country and looked liked one too. Much more down to earth though than a British person. That's basically what Australians are or were though so. As for the LA bit we ll sadly that's just how it is there. It's superficial and uber narcissistic due to proximity to Hollywood. It permeates all of SoCal but LA is the epicenter of it all.

I met a few Canadians while I was there, but I was the only American with the (I don't know what to call it.) It was Vacation package deal. Most of the travelers were Japanese, and only about 5 or 6 of us spoke English. We cleared customs faster as they needed a translator for everyone else. I visited Cairns, Queensland. I feel like New Zealand and Australia are very similar to how America and Canada are. Very similar in ways, but unique enough to be able to differentiate the two. I think Australia was a bit more laid back compared to New Zealand. I think Australian food is better than New Zealand’s, but not by much. New Zealand is very small so you could see pretty much all there is to see in a month or two depending on how much time you’d like to spend in each place. New Zealand is incredibly beautiful nearly anywhere you go. Australia has heaps more land, which isn’t as scenic as New Zealand, but there are some BEAUTIFUL places in Australia. I think New Zealand treats their indigenous population better. I could go on and on, but those are just a few things off the top of my head.

@@carlingas666 No. South America is a continent and North America is a continent. Big Hoss obviously meant the United States of America, which is usually shortened to tje U.S. or America. If you're going to try and be a smart ass, atleast be smart.

Elizabeth LeBeau you need a real education because you were falsely educated. You need to reread the name of this country and look up its name. It’s not America.

I'm Texan and having a very hard time hearing everyone's suggestions that an Aussie accent is like a Texan or southern accent with British 😅

Well, the South and Australia were populated predominately by Irish and Scots in the 17th century, sooo that's probably more accurate than you think.

@@IggyTthunders that makes a lot of sense, it's probably because I live with the accent and speak with one so I don't really hear it

@NotJo My understanding about the Southern dialect is that the South, besides boasting the oldest colony, Virginia, also boasts the oldest *penal* colonies in America, which were replete with Irish and Scots, which informs the Southern accent.

I will say from personal experience, I was given a lot of compliments on my completely run of the mill Midwestern accent when I visited Brisbane. First and last time that ever happened.

Your topic the American accent is great because there are several styles. Southern, northern, Midwestern, and west coast. But do other countries have different accents depending on the location. You know N-S-E-W. But like I said I loved it. No offense here.
