Great video. Spent last week unblocking multiple frozen condensate pipes at a school/college. Will be re-routing and insulating the 32mm pipes next week!

I was going to skip through your video but am glad I followed it right through. Last night my boiler desided to fault out after making some strange vibrating / throbing noises it being -3 deg. Knowing about the condensate problem with freezing, I checked the internal tank (Worcester Bosch CDI) and found it was totally full. My external drain to soil stack distance was only about 100mm with 21.5 plastic non insulated solvent weld pipe but still wasn't draining. I had to hacksaw through the pipe and redirect over flow into a bucket as an emergency temp fix. Note I had recently tried lowering the boile roperating temprature to ensure it was in condensing mode more often for fuel saving and this may be producing more condensate than it could cope with given the -3 outside temp. So it looks like upgrade to 32mm pipe and insulate. NB Previous system had worked ok for 3 years

Just had a Viessmann boiler installed. Condensate runs into a 38mm pipe connected to a soak away. There is only a small external exposed section, most of the external pipe is underground but the exposed section is not insulated. Engineer said there is no risk of freezing using 38mm pipe.

Yes they do and I speak from experience. That last frost we had screwed up my boiler for two days before I realised it was this pipe that had frozen and buggered up the heating system. Thawed it out and there you go working perfectly.

Derek, my installer fitted the condensate pipe externally and lagged it with foam insulation. Not only does it look unsightly on the outside wall but also forms a debris trap i.e. always full of leaves. Couldn't the pipe simply have been tapped into the bath waste adjoining the boiler cupboard at first floor level? Great vids btw! Cheers JL

Before the building regs changed I could not understand why my very long exterior condensate pipe in a first floor flat had not been insulated...it seemed sensible to me. Then when the ice has stopped my boiler I could not understand it even more. It was worth listening to your talk. I will have to get it insulated no question.

Worcester Bosch doesn't allow the condensate pipework to be run externally on their 2000 boiler unless a Condensure is used. I think their other boilers have larger condensate traps so don't require a Condensure.

Hi Derek, thank you very much for the information it’s very helpful, may I just ask, if our condensate pipe is not insulated and is made of thin possibly PP plastic and runs vertically down our outside wall over 15 feet into our gutter drain and turns around the house corner horizontally also at the top, the Worcester boiler was fitted in 2016 did the fitters not comply with the BS6798 regulations.

Excellent video. On my system, installed 2 months ago, the pipe taking away the condensate looks like 15mm polypropylene. Am I alright to use standard pipe insulation (all the water pipes in the loft have this around them) to protect the condensate pipe from freezing? There is a run of about 400 mm between the exit from the boiler to the rainwater downspout and a fall of about 20mm
@tomkatgastraining

Standard pipe insulation is not waterproof so it gets wet and then freezes you will need waterproof rubber insulation or you will be just wasting your time and money

The reduction of CO2 in the UK from gas boilers has been insignificant. The future reduction of CO2 from gas boilers will be insignificant. Over the last 20 years boilers have got better and will continue to get more efficient and will not contribute to CO2 reduction. It is impossible to measure.

The UK currently contributes 1.1% of global C02 emissions. accordingly, if net 0 was achieved in the UK (at great expense to the taxpayer and consequent hardship owing to reduction in tax revenue available for other uses - you know, nurses wages, education, support for elderl people, that sort of thing), there would be a global reduction in emissions of 1.1%. Worth the pain and effort?

Did you actually say that you couldn't understand how the customer didn't notice the damage to the copper pipe which was used for the condensate going through the wall? Did you actually say that? Are you kidding? Home owners don't even see anything but the front of the boiler, let alone seeing the pipes. Home owners only want a heating system which works and they hand over wads of cash to people who they feel that they can trust to do the job properly. Sadly, most companies and workmen don't give a damn about procedures and quality of workmanship and the home owner does not have the knowledge to know if they are getting a bodge job. I recently had a boiler fitted and the workman rushed through everything as quickly as he could, without draining down, checking that air isn't trapped in the water system, bleeding radiators or checking them, repairing damage to the flue hole or even cleaning up after himself. The company didn't even bother contacting me to enquire how the job went, only to ask for payment of invoice.
