Hello, I've seen and admired your work for a while now, honestly dont know how long I've even been a subscriber but I've always wanted to buy a knife from you, was still in high school when I stumbled across your channel so I didn't have a job (parents wouldn't let me). Now I feel comfortable possibly forking out the money for something completely custom over even on of your designs. Is there anyway to directly contact you?

Not sure if I’m right, but I’d imagine at that price the diamonds aren’t electroplated. A lot of the cheaper stones will bond the diamond with an epoxy that will let you pull the diamonds free as you sharpen.

Andrew Sabatino that would be a fine reply if those were DMT stones. $10 for a 3 pack and they are all coarse grit even if they say fine. I doubt these are DMT. The mono crystal just refers to how many cutting surfaces the diamond has. Mono being one cutting side where a poly crystal uses in cheaper stones are irregular and prone to fracturing and becoming finer the longer you use it. It could be the case that they used a poly structure and actually applied it in a good fashion like electroplating and they just broke down or they were made at a factory that Harbor Freight uses were they will skim the plate with epoxy and dust it with the diamonds to bond.

Actually, I do own their cousins without holes. They come handy for sharpening mesed up screwdrivers or touching up a mower's blade, even a nicked axe. They're also in my woodworking chest, i'm gonna be hated here, but 95% of my woodworking is done with chisels and planes sharpened on a 200/400 and stropped just till the burr escapes. That's more than enough for my needs and when I have to go higher I do it. I'm French, people here tend to prefer grits too coarse than too fine. In the end of the day you can wear the coarse one to decent fine, quicker than you'd reshape on the too fine one... Diamonds don't hold but considering their bite I just cycle them the coarse becoming the medium then the fine. But hell, they're not flat!

I use the exact same cheap-o diamond stones to flatten my worn expensive wet stones. They work quite well for that.

I got a set from HF out of curiosity... They came all attached to a sturdy rectangular plastic frame and then the whole rectangular prism rests in a tight fitting cup with rubber on the bottom. It seems to eliminate all the slippage you talked about in this video, seems to be similar to the solution you came up with. There were 4 sides, with grits labeled 200,300,400, and 600 (I bet those are about a hundred grit too high), but they still were alright for 12 dollars or so.

@@sampfalcon5128 that's the one I use to reprofile blades, then take them over to a Sharp Pebble 1000/6000 wet pair or my knockoff of the Edge Pro Apex to get the actual edge.

I use the harbor freight 4 way diamond stone (200, 300, 400, 600) for fixing bad chips or on super full knives just to get a base edge going. I even flatten my stones sometimes with the 200 grit side. They took some practice getting used to the fact that they're pretty thin and not mounted to the plastic very well. So I just have to use my free hand to press them down to make sure they are flat. Minor adjustment to my technique but again, I think they are only good for removing a lot of metal before moving on to my real stones. I can go from the 600 grit straight to my 1000 grit stone or sometimes my chosera 800 only because I love that stone haha

I used a these for years to sharpen my chisels, until I got an expensive set. The results were razor sharp chisels although they were a probably finer grit than the set you tried. The only problem with them is they last a year or two at most if used regularly. You could have attached the plastic to the mdf with double sided tape.

I don't know a single thing about sharpening, but one trick I picked up from luthiers that has served me well in similar situations is to lay some masking tape on each surface, and then superglue the masking tape-covered surfaces together. It's surprisingly strong, particularly in the shear direction, and it can be removed easily without leaving a residue.

I used the same set to clean and straighten the edges of cut ceramic tiles when I refurbed my kitchen and bathroom. They're also good for bringing back old wood chisels as long as you have finer stones to actually sharpen them. I've had mine for years and the only drawback was that the metal and plastic parts came unstuck by themselves. I use them on a flat wood surface and they're fine! Well, not fine fine but coarse fine!

The most interesting thing with these kinds of stones is how long they hold up. I've bought some of them in my day and they seem to barely outlast wet&dry sandpaper. Sharpen about a dozen knives with one of those - the diamond grit will break off and even the "coarse" will start to feel rather velvety and lose it's bite.

Had these diamond coated plates for few years. Used it for reprofiling blades, removing chips in blades & it works great removing sharp edges from glass. They are not fine enough for sharpening works. I use a water stone for that. Mine still works well after all these years.

I have that same diamond plastic stones in Portugal. I use them to reprofile blade in conjunction with a fallkniven DC4 and a strop. It works fine for me. Love your work and ideas!

I got these out of curiosity after watching this video.After a month of reprofiling everything from 1095 to cruwear to m390 I can easily reccommend these.I just set them up in a stone holder and they work perfectly. Afterwards i finish the edge on finer stones once I've got my angle set.

they are perfect for flattening my whetstone. glue them on a piece of glass and they will never get out of flat, and they cut whetstone like whetstone are nothing

I have some of these I cut up and bent to different radii, for quickly sanding corners in wood and steel. They work well for stoning some things in a machine shop too, like a tool that's beginning to lose its edge. Also good for knocking edges off of glass.

I just discovered your site and am now subscribed. Excellent stuff. I bought a set of these as a lark about 10 years ago and have just bought a second set as the first wore out. I sdid the same as you, and glued them to some hardwood scraps. I think they are invaluable, but NOT AS SHARPENING STONES. Rather as files, sandpaper replacements, for deburring, all kinda of stuff. You can sharpen things like garden tools very well, repair and re profile damaged tools, do the initial flattening of a worn oil stone, use on glass and ceramics...On and on. They have many many times paid for themselves. Just stop thinking of them as sharpening stones.

I have these, a set of cheap water stones, and a strop. Water stones are much finer, and do all the sharpening. The main problem with cheap water stones is they wear unevenly, so I use these stones to flatten the water stones. Overall I have very good results with my cheap products. Not re-profiling knives, just keeping a good edge on my tools.

I had a set of similar stones on a box shaped arrangement, you turned the box around in the holder to bring up the grit you wanted. Just kept it in my "on site" bag for a quick on site sharpen in case a chisel got damaged, they did the job till I got home and could use my water stone

I bought and used these out of curiosity. In my case besides the issues you described the diamonds just came off. In my opinion if you only have $10, go to an auto store and get some metal sandpaper. Depending on what you want to sharpen, you can get sandpaper in grits to match the task at hand. Sandpaper along with a flat tile or small plate glass or maybe coated mdf (the mdf has issues as it gets wet). is in my opinion can get a sharp edge as good as diamonds but will take a little longer to achieve. That said if you sharpen even a modest amount on a regular basis, sandpaper will turn out to be more costly over the long run than the diamond stones. I sharpen tools mostly so knives may need more precision. Also I've found that the small diamond cards are very effective at sharpening small edged tools i.e. router bits. My strategy at keeping tools sharp is to try to avoid sharpening tool by trying to maintain them sharp by quick tune ups on strop and /or fine high grit. Again just my opinion, you definitely have more experience than I do.

i do that at work where i dont have any stones, if ive messed up the blade(im a mechanic so mess blades up doing all sorts of stupid stuff) and need it sharp i chuck something flat with some wet sand paper on it in the vice and can get pretty decent blade with it

I have these too, different brand but same stuff. Works ok for re-grinding profiles on old neglected chisels and plane blades. 2 coarser ones lose their diamonds really fast tho, but still not the worst thing I’ve my money put. I also epoxied them on straight surfaces.

Well, watched this and got some mini versions of these for $3. Sharpened the kitchen knifes (never used sharpening stones) and I've got to the point where I've wore the course down to smooth metal, bent the medium but the fine is still as new, used them overhanging in a vice. I'm impressed with diamond sharpeners and going to invest in a quality pair. Glad I found this channel since I've learnt a new skill

The most relevant point to test with these products is their longevity . Diamond coated plates have somewhat of a short lifespan , and I expect cheap ones to be even shorter.

I got these same, or similar, ones from Harbor Freight. The package says the grits are 180, 260, and 360. I actually loved them. I had a couple big blades and a tomahawk that I wanted to reprofile and they made quick work of it. It is like having 2 coarse, and 1 a little less coarse. I finished each one off with a different cheap diamond stone that's 450 on one side and 750 on the other, and that's good enough for me because I like abusing my blades anyways.

These are actually nice if you're having to do smoothing work on marble, cement, porcelain structural components or ceramic pours. I used two sets to hand de-surface my house's slab before I did tile work.

In my limited experience I've found that these cheaper diamond plates use a glue or resin to hold the diamonds. Not much different from making diamond sandpaper. The cost of electroplating usually I think would cost more than these low end plates put you into the $25+ per plate neighborhood.

I bought mine at harbor freight I hold the fine stone in my hand and use my stainless kitchen knife every few months. I got them for 4$. I am about to spend a couple hundred dollars on sharpening equipment though. But they are better than nothing.

I've had really good results from lansky diamond bench plates. They're about $20 a piece and come in a variety of grits. I even use the coarse on my axe. (I have a few including extra fine. I also use them for s110v, maxamet, m390, and a bunch of other steels. They have been great.

Several years ago I got a cheap $12.00 diamond set that was a four-sided block. The finest of the four sides was still very coarse, but since it was a block rather than individual stones they were all perfectly flat. It also came in a plastic case with a removable lid and rubber feet on the bottom which completely solved the problem of how to hold it too. I've never used them much, and I have much better stones now, but for someone looking for a very cheap set of diamond stones it does work. I got it at Sportsman's Guide if I remember correctly.

Could you give a link for those? I bought one about 15 years ago from some local store, but I can't find replacement for it anywhere. Mine is about 25x100mm and as far as I can remember it's something like 400-600 grit. It has been in my pocket at work all this time and I have salvaged probably hundred knives on jobsites with it. I have managed to even sharpen (or at least debur) some wood drillbits etc. Mine has lost its grit by now and I really need a new one. I have tried couple pocket sized ones from ebay but not yet found anything usable.

They were sold about 10 or so years ago in our Lidl malls in Europe. Sometimes you could get a sort-of-a-brick-holder for them. Still, they've worked fine for few yars sharpening cheap kitchen knives of mine and my friends. The yellow one is nice.

I have stones like these but about 1/4 size. They're cheap as dirt and work well for my chisels that get abused. I use some nails around it's contour to hold them to a board. Also you didn't have to peel the plastic, you could glue that plastic to your MDF. Lastly, they work better when wet.

I bought pack of three mini versions of these diamond sharpener from a pound shop ($1.50 ish). When at home I'll use my whetstones for a faster cleaner edge, but I carry the fine diamond sharpener on me as my edc because it small, light and can get the job done.

I have those stones that I bought at harbor freight. I've had them for a couple of years and I find they do a descent job. I would agree that they are good for re profiling blade and that they are hard to hold down. My idea was to hot glue the backing to a piece of wood and put that in a vise. I have used them for re profiling a chefs knife I have that had a very chipped edge and it worked well but I don't finish with those. For the final edge I use a dmt extra fine steel. I used to use only the dmt steel for maintaining my blades but I found that it would have to be replaced about every six months. I find it best to use a combination of stones and steels depending how much sharpening is required. For the most part my knives can be maintained with a Wusthof steel unless they need more attention.

The coarse is really good for knocking the grooves out of my Tormek's wheel. Then I go up to the M&F to smooth it out

Heh! I bought that same set around 6 or 7 years ago. My solution to the "slipperiness" problem was to chisel out a 2x4 so that they'd fit in nice and snug and just deep enough that the steel part was just above the 2x4 surface. Worked like a charm. However, I never really liked them and haven't ever used them. Maybe a couple times. Still, was interesting to see/hear your take on them. Also, yeah, DMT is great. I love their stuff. Just need MOAR of it! 😃 I also have quite a few other stones and sharpening equipment. I've been drooling over a TSPROF for a few years now. Not sure when I'll pull the trigger and get one.

I just keep these around my shop for really rough general stuff -- sharpening garden shears, taking burrs off the shank of a drill bit so they sit straight in the chuck. Good for stuff like that.

Double sided tape works well to hold them down on a better backer, such as a piece of granite tile or thick flat wood you checked for flatness. No need remove them from the plastic backer. Just tape them down with double sided carpet tape or whatever strong double sided tape you have laying around. Definitely need a set with finer grits to get your moneys worth, though.

I have an old set that look just like those. And they are 10+ years old. But I still get good use out of them. I used CA glue on them, with the base, on to wood just like you did. But that was also to get them off the table. Anyway. Just wanted to say that for the casual reprofiling and nick removal I do they are just the ticket. TY for the video. Entertaining and educational. Love your vids man! you should do a video entitled 'How to know when youre getting good at sharpening' and go over some things to look out for.. other than the obvious 'your knife is sharp'.

i've been using mine that i got for free from a friend and been using it for the rough finish for the last year and i been using titanium for the most of the time. it works for me

I put mine in a rubber water stone clamp. Easy. They worked great for me too!

I tried those as my first diamond plate sharpener. Worked enough to switch. I found cheapies, like this dont strip so easy if you run them away from edge like a strop. Then they last much longer. The ones tested here, stripped in 2 knives, except for the yellow, Its my junker for the toolbox now. I use pink pencil eraser to clean my diamond stones, my ceramic sharpeners, and my strop. Super easy and quick. Dmt extra coarse kicks butt for reprofiling! My old solingen finally got a bevel, in minutes.

i had these same type of diamond stones in the block form with 4 different grits stones on each side so they were easier to handle out the box, reason i had them was from a xmas stocking filler. i recently made a short sword from an old taxi spring. the use i had for the diamond block was just after i ground the main bevel which was 10 cm wide on each edge i used it to block out the 50 grit scratches to the claimed 600 grit side working the way through all for grits on the block. so for re/profiling they are good in the block form which is around $20. i have a couple of the flat ones in this vid and yeah you will need to remount them. i'm currently making the pommel for the sword mentioned i doubt very much i will use the diamond stones to sharpen the cutting bevel as i do have a sharpening jig for that. so if anyone is considering these for a budget i'd say get the block with 4 stones, maybe you could pick one up as they as cheap and see if the 4th side is smoother than the lowest one you had or they missed out one of the middle ones.

Harbor Freight sells similar ones with a stiffer plastic base as well as a holder/case that keeps the "stones" in place. If you get them on sale or with a coupon, they are under $10. They are VERY coarse right out of the package but after they break in, they become quite usable "shop stones" for touching up tools and bits, etc.. I would not use them for kitchen knives or good pocket knives.. I've had mine for over 5 years and they are still going strong and for the sub-$10 price, they have been a very good purchase in my books..

I was always having doubt either to but them or not and how long are they gonna last from my usage. Now that some of the things are clarified, it makes choosing to buy a diamond sharpening stone easier for me. Now I decided to save some more money and buy a better quality diamond sharpening stone so that it'll serve me better and all my blades can be sharpen fast.

Well, I bought a 4 sided sharpening block made out ot these diamond plates a year ago. And this is the first time I remember I can sharp something satisfactorily. It works in deed. And stil works well after one year using it continuously with Knives, pocket knives, some tools, diferent machetes, an axe and also hunting broadheads. They have writen on a side that they are 200, 300, 400 and 600. I´m happy with it.

They are meant to be glued to a block of wood of suitable thickness. I used simple 1x3 pine. Once you glue them down, they work well. Keep them wiped off frequently with a wet rag to keep the grit clear of metal dust. They are durable and do the job nicely. The better the steel, the better the results. I sharpen my Mora skandi ground blades, my USMC knife, and several hatchets. I modify the Old Hickory knives into more useable types and the diamond hones work great. After the fine hone, use a leather strop and jeweler's rouge for a super mirror finish.

I got a set of thses for yard tools. Like shovel blades, lawn mower blades and "golf club" weed wackers. I dont bother to clean the mud off the tool blades and just hold the diamond plate in my hand like a file. No worries if I loose one or break it

i'm a site carpenter, i can carry these around in a kit bag as they are light weight. i can store them easily as they really thin and take up little space. and the plastic protects the stones from snapping or twisting...for a portable blade sharpener they are good value for money.

Sounds like a solid review. I have a set. Mine are glued to scrap faux stone counter top. Fancy. And like your experience cheap but useful.

I have a similar 10$ diamond stone that comes with 4 sides together from 200grit to 600grit have reporofiled lots of knives on it and keep all my knives sharp with just a few strokes on the 600 grit. Works well no complaints.

I keep a couple of these in my "goes-everywhere" tool bag, and use them to touch up my chisels. Like the man says, they're cheap ($10), but they're easy to carry and they work well enough. Mine (from HF) are 180, 260 , 360.

I have never seen the diamond plates like you have there. However, those same plates are mounted on a big plastic block, 4 of them, one on each side of the block, and the block in turn mounts to a holder which has rubber feet that hold it in place when you sharpen. Harbor Freight has the system for about $12.00 U.S. dollars. They do work very well to profile a blade if required. The colors represent the grit.

I bought those same stones from harbor freight for I think about 10-12 dollars and had the same issues with them that you did. Mine were even more warped so I wrapped them in paper towel and stuck them under a couple of bricks and forgot about them for about a month. Then they were somewhat flat. I think the grits stated on the packaging were something like 180, 240, 360 and I dont believe those numbers for a second.

I have those, i liked the yellow coarse one, it lasted about 3 years and i still start sharpening with it because it's the only one that is effective compared to something else i have! I considered ordering a new coarse stone but I am afraid the diamonds dull fastly. Then i considered buying the shapton coarse stone but i don't know. I want kind of really coarse to start with and then i just move on to whetstones. On the other hand the dmt stone and atoma would be nice because they are straight and you can flatten your whetstones with them more nicer. Great video I really appreciate your efforts to educate people I learned sharpening again in 2017 when i watched your channel and it is still something i like a lot. Gretings from Finland!

i bought a set of these about 15 years ago from Poundland yes £1 and i'm still using them. They are now all very fine grit after years of sharpening chisels and knives but a £1 well spent

Outdoors55, what do you think about a product called "Edge Maker" pre-set sharpening and honing rods affixed to a handle that you lay flat on a flat table then just pass through the rods a few times. Equals very very sharp! What do you think or what do you know about them?

On amazon there exists a “HTS 131A0 6" Double Sided Diamond Sharpening Stone” selling for8.88 that is supposed to be 400 grit on one side and 600 on the other. They don’t suck completely. Wanted to let you know so you could add to your amazon link if desired.
