The treatment of clavicle fractures has been changing for 20+ years. When do we consider clavicle fracture surgery? When is a sling ok for clavicle fractures.
Most clavicle or collarbone fractures will heal fine without surgery. The risks of surgery on the clavicle nearly outweigh any potential benefits for most of you. There are a few indications or reasons to operate on clavicle fractures but these reasons are not present in most of you. These fractures are usually treated in a sling until xrays show that the fracture has healed enough to start motion and use.
See this post for more in depth information about clavicle fractures. www.howardluksmd.com/orthopedi...

WOW. I am impressed. I think far too many surgeons rush into surgery and the truth is that the body is amazing. I love this approach. I love how you do share the dangers and risks of surgery and it is not always best. I think it is downplayed with many surgeons. I have seen this personally. And to highlight that no 2 people are the same and no 2 injuries (even if the same injury) will be the "same" in different people. This was great! And helpful.

Yeah. The body is amazing that is for sure. And using herbal remedies and such can help a ton. My gf husband broke his back and it was really bad but they could not do surgery due to the location of the break. The prognosis was not very good and (his wife called me and asked what could they do if anything) and he used herbs and essential oils; (and massage as soon as he could); and his healing was remarkable. The doctors were absolutely stunned. I do not think nutrition and herbs and things of this nature get nearly enough attention. I have seen them do amazing things. My daughter had a complete rupture of her hamstring (complete tendon avulsion) and it was completely reattached in 3 days with natural remedies; massage, tons of raw milk and basically a meat diet. We continued that for weeks and she has no issues with it to this day. That was 10 years ago. She was/is a dancer and was able to dance on it in about a month; and never had any pain or issues. I hope someday this knowledge of healing makes it to more people. It could help a lot of people.

I was riding a bike down a hill and I went flying over the top of it and it hit me as well and I broke my collarbone. I didn’t think I needed a sling and I constantly threw it off. Nearly seven years later my collarbone really hurts from a few push ups. Probably won’t go and get it checked out.

Hello, what would you recommend with these findings in my case? “There is a acute nonarticular oblique fracture through the lateral one third of the clavicle with 2.5 cm overlap of the fragments. There is 1 shaft width caudal displacement of the dominant lateral fracture fragment”.

Great summary. I smashed mine into 6 pieces (bike) and also broke x2 ribs which weren’t discovered until 2 weeks post surgery. My surgeon gave me the option but later said he was happy I opted for surgery as “it would have never healed”. With the fact the shoulder was moving the ribs, I would have continued in pain for a long time. Now 3 weeks post surgery I’m starting to get reasonable movement although it may take longer as I’m a 40y.o. with T1D of 30 yrs.

Yup...The gents describes my experience and healing to the T. I have some overlap and I'm good at detecting barametric pressure changes....but otherwise fine. I've seen clavacle surgeries and I beleieve it's 10X the trauma for the body to deal with. You also have a piece of metal inside of you that you don't want. The body is remarkably good at healing itself and can deal with a broken bone better than you think.

I wonder if muscle strength and development around the clavicular would help pre and post breaks? Yes I broke mine in Feb and actually had an upper arm DVT within 48 hours. I think it was the figure of 8 strap that caused it. I am a 51 year fit slim non smoking male with no existing health issues.

I broke my collarbone playing soccer when I was 15 years old. Doctor said I didn’t need surgery and it would fuse on its own and he was right. It healed and I continued playing soccer through high school with no issues. However, after high school I got into weightlifting and noticed within a year or so into that journey that my collarbone was definitely affecting me a bit. It fused just a little bit crooked and has caused some weakness and muscle atrophy in my left shoulder and pec. I’m 29 now and am still big into weightlifting/bodybuilding but have continued to deal with that issue. In hindsight, I do wish I had gotten it surgically fixed when I was 15 but there’s no way I could have known I would get so addicted to the gym and ironically that’s about the only pursuit it would have an affect on. Just something for you young guys to think about.

Hi, was one of you give me some advice… Went to the doctors for a lump on my shoulder on the side of my deltoid… I’ve had no pain no issues but still the lawn for me so I got an x-ray… Found out that what I believe to be my collarbone is broken and has been for over a decade but I have no pain and no issues or mobility… Have any thoughts? The doctors were very curious as to how that was in there sending me to a specialist… It’s been fine until today when they did certain movements and put pressure on it… It’s in pain but not nearly what I’ve read it should be. Mobility still fine I would really like to hear your thoughts… I have the x-ray but don’t know how to post it.

Kindly advise me if there is any prescription medication that I can take because whenever it's cold I'm completely numb I can't feel my hand, head, lips, and leg well to feel better I massage using my right hand. I broke my collar bone after a car accident about 6 years ago. I never went back to the doctor after my initial hospital visit. I was given a sling and didn't use it as long as I was supposed to and continued to carry my daughter who was 9 months old at the time. I actually dropped her once because my arm gave out. Luckily I was putting her to bed and she fell into her crib.. However now, 6 years later, I continue to have pain in my left shoulder and my sciatica is REALLY bad now on the left side too. Is that related? (Sciatica and previous unhealed collar bone?) Makes me wonder. My pain is getting worse and worse with age. I can't even sleep on my left side because it's too painful in the mornings if I do. I wonder if I should go to a doctor to get it looked at. I'm scared of surgery. But this pain is even harder to deal with. I can't even work because it's too painful to stand for more that a couple hours at a time. I try excersizes and stretching which gives momentary relief. But it's always back within a couple hours or the next day.

@@thedistance1155 yea its functional like your normal shoulder would be just pops ocasionally, hurts when doing heavy benches or lifting random stuff. very worried i'll get osteoarthritis in it at some point but we'll see. surgery is an option but its not an emergency or damaging so insurance wont cover it. just got screwed by the doc.

Hey Bro try keeping your shoulder in place. Using a song bag for at least 3 more weeks. It's going to take forever but you will get great results. I didn't get surgery. I couldn't afford it. Just keep your shoulder in place. Ypit bone will heal. Try not to smoke or drink during the process. (it's not necissary for you to get surgery)

I broke my collarbone 2 weeks ago and currently wear a sling (no operation). I was wondering if an 8 brace is better when it comes to healing compared to just a sling. There isn't really much literature out there. Some say a sling is better while others say an 8 brace is better. I would really appreciate your opinion.

I'm a 51 year old man who broke 3/22/2020, my non dominant clavicle (left). I had surgery and everything is going well. Before the surgery I had a lot of pain. Now I'm in a sling all night and when I go out. Pain is minimal.

I think the traditional 2 cm of overlap is way out of date. Mine is not overlapping but the ends are side by side with my shoulder lower. I was given a sling not surgery and at 5 weeks have daily shoulder pain. I am getting a second opinion this week and want surgery to get my shoulder back in the right position. Be aware even with less than 2 cm of shortening you are highly likely to have biomechanical problems with your shoulder.

I know what you mean. I´m in a slightly different situation, in that I had surgery a week after the accident. I had 1.5cm of overlap, but I´m fairly certain without surgery I would have kept feeling that daily "burning" pain for a relatively long time afterwards, since the bone can take months and months to fully heal. I had conflicting advice and I had a much tougher decision since my own father who is a radiologist told me that I should go with the conservative approach and not have surgery. The orthopaedic surgeon told me I had something like a 30% chance of bone union without surgery so in the end I chose to have it, and I´m glad I did since i can´t imagine having that pain for potentially months afterwards. I´m now two months post-op and no longer have any pain, just numbness in the area and currently still doing physio.

@Romans8-9
@Romans8-9 4 жыл бұрын
@@aeroraj No complications thus far. I am 3 months post surgery. I do experience random bouts of numbness and minor pain but very brief and not constant. I´m no Doctor but if you are not experiencing pain, its probably fine not to have surgery. That said, I would see a Doctor soon and maybe get an X-ray to see if the bone is healing. If you didn´t have any major displacement you will probably be fine. Good luck.

These doctors I swear... I had my left side collar bone fixed with A plate and 6 screws 7 months ago and it healed perfect and was great. I now broke the right side and I have doctors like you telling me what your gonna fix and what you aren’t... you aren’t the one who will be in pin or risk of improper healing. Both are overlapped now I’m arguing with this doctor as my skin has a bone popping up into the skin, and is pinching the nerve and or muscle when I take a big bite. Why don’t you do what patients ask instead of your high and mighty opinion. Y’all play god to often I get your experts but y’all sound scared to operate or fix people.

This type of surgery is very risky. There are so many nerves and blood vessels and major stuff so close to the clavicle that the risks of clavicle surgery are much greater than others so many like a more conservative approach. My gf is a surgical tech and works at a level one trauma hospital and they have some excellent surgeons. She said they rarely do a clavicle surgery since it is that risky. The need has to be very great for them to even consider it. The risks are more serious than other surgeries.
