One of the more common questions I get is: Do you get to fly different jets? In this video I answer that as well as if it's possible to switch from cargo aircraft to fighters and vice versa.

One of my high school classmates flew A-10s out of UPT the after his active duty commitment was up he became an airline pilot and got a contract with the AZ Nat. Guard flying F-16s and was a Instructor pilot in the Lawn Dart as he called it. I also have a friend that Was an F-15 pilot. He went to medical school became a Flight Surgeon to stay in the jet. During the 90s he was one of only 3 flying Flight Surgeons in the Air Force. There was a female Raptor pilot at Langley who I was told transitioned to the F-35.

It would be interesting to see the cars the news pilots are flying. When I lived near Shaw we joked that you could pick the pilots by their land vehicles. F-16 pilots had little sporty cars and fast Japanese motorcycles. A-10 pilots had nice pickups and Harleys.

I'm prior Navy and got commissioned in 1977, so I'm sure things have changed. After T-2/TA-4 training, I flew the RF-8 Crusader, one cruise, then the F-14A two cruises. Then went to shore duty as an Adversary at VF-126 at Miramar flying the A-4E/F and F-16N (with some flying the F-5E as well) simultaneously, so you may have a flight in the A-4 followed by a flight in the F-16N. Then to the reserves (while flying for Delta Air Lines out of Salt Lake City) flying the A-4 Superfox (a stripped down A-4M). Retired from the reserves in 1997 after 20. All of my time was at Miramar, after training. Very worthwhile!

Hi Hasard! Ever since I came across the video "why has the F-35 received so much negative attention", I have become a huge fan of yours and find your videos extremely informative! I work in IT so some of your videos talking about next gen. aircraft development linked to Agile thinking, Machine Learning (AI) and Project Management makes me believe you're an amazing teacher! I know you take questions sometimes and make videos off of that, so two things that have always intrigued me are how the Chaffs work and what they actually look like to a naked eye, as well as how do towed decoys work. Would really love if you could make a video explaining different types of countermeasures and what they do. Nevertheless, I always look forward to your videos! Thank you!

Do aspiring military pilots have to fill-up something called a dream sheet, where they can write down what kind of assignment they want to have & where they want to be assigned to, as well as what choice of aircraft they want to fly after flight school? If anyone graduates on top of their class in pilot training, are they given a choice of whichever airframe they want to fly & wherever in the world they want to be assign to? After pilot school, do you have to go to a base where they do training for a particular aircraft before being given your desired operational assignment?

Where the lift fan door is in the F-35B, the A model has its in flight boom refueling door. The air force prefers the boom method of refueling due to its faster fuel transfer rates which are needed to refuel bombers. The B & C model have gone for the simpler Probe and Drogue refueling system as used by the tankers in those arms of the military near the cockpit instead. Without the lift fan the A & C models also have a longer weapons bay and can carry a fair bit more fuel.

Very interesting stuff. I have so many questions. Can the f22 dog fight? Can a f16 out turn a f22 and f35? I heard someone say the best reliable fighter we really have is the hornet. Is that true?

The f22 is a very good dogfighting jet but would probably shoot the enemy before that.

What happens if during pilot training, you get moved on the heavy flight track rather than the fighter flight track? Is there a way to change your path if you do not want to fly heavies?

What are all the designations of the vipers? Every time I watch a fighter pilot video I'm hearing another model...I didn't realize there are so many versions of one aircraft...can you elaborate please?...thanks

It is confusing isn’t it! There’s a great Haynes F-16 Manual out there which details the F-16 evolution, and all the diff. blocks and letter designations, which militaries are using which.

There are many Blocks of the C model (modern single seat version most prevalent in the world.). The different blocks generally illustrate upgrades to technology and engines along the way. For example, from block 40 to 50 you get a better engine and an IFF interrogator.
