In Germany vets promote this as well. It is quite common there and Guinea Pig websides provide owners with lots of information on wich foodgroups they can feed. The logic behind it is that those foods contain lots of moist wich is good for the kidney’s and the chewing movement is more natural wich prevents dental issues and there is less boredom and a healthier weight. At least that is my interpretation, a vet said the same to me. The guinea pigs that we adopted were used to pellets so they still get them, with freshfood and extra vit c like childlife. But I understand now why some vets say this, it is a good thing if you know about all the different natural foods they can eat. But when we don’t know it is less good.

Yes, all the years I've never been able to get my piggies to eat them. My Vet says the same thing. I've tried all SPS & Sherwood with no luck. They get all the Oxbow Timothy and Orchard Grass Hay, Veggies, & Child Life vitamin C every day❤🐹😘 As A treat they get Peaflakes.

My vets where I live (I always went to an animal clinic where they specialize in rodents) always said pellets can be fet but ONLY as an addition but they are not necessary if you can make sure that your pigs get enough vitamin C anyway. It's very important to give a lot of hay so their digestion runs properly (and pay attention that there is no autumn crocus inside because they are poisonous!). Also hay is helping with dental abrasion as well as keeping them occupied all day long. If you decide to feed pellets definitly have to make sure that they are not made with molasses or simmilar as binding material because the sugar in it may disturb the natural bacteria in your guinea pigs bowels which in extreme cases will cause deadly diarrhea. I'm sure though Scott is very well informed in what he feeds his piggies. :) I just don't agree with the part that pellets are necessary because mine lived up to 8 years and never had them but in the beginning. I only fed hay, vegetables, grass, herbs and sometimes fruit as a treat. You can also occasionally give oilseeds (like but I wouldn't recommend them if your piggies are in the upper weight range. :) (sorry for any mistakes english isn't my mother tongue...)

If you notice the small pets select bags are not transparent. Vitamin C degrades in sunlight. That's why I suggest supplementing with child life liquid vitamin C. Fresh hay and fresh veggies also make the difference. I said not all pellets are equal

It is important to have a minimum of 8² uninterrupted feet. You could have a 100' but if it is just in little sections it doesn't do any good. Also laying the hay on the floor will make it dirty and waste much more. That's why I recommend the snack shack as I said in the video. I won't hold out advice I will always share it with everyone. But if you are asking me to OK something I haven't recommended you will have to decide for yourself.

I believed that too for so long! It was only recently that I found more accurate information regarding the teeth topic: The only thing that is solid enough to grind a tooth down is another tooth. Meaning that it is the amount of time spent chewing/grinding that is crucial. Much time grinding is best achieved when guinea pigs eat lots of their natural foods, which is grass, herbs and greens. Rodent teeth are made for soft foods rich in water and fibre. Solid foods are chewed very differently from grass and greens: Pellets have to be squashed, which puts a lot of pressure on rodents' dental roots their teeth are not made for, ultimately resulting in preventable and very painful teeth problems (and other secondary health conditions). Also, when fed pellets, guinea pigs spend less overall time chewing because of the energy density. I do not know if there are any well researched websites (backed up with a lot of veterinarian literature) in English, I only know of the German site Meerschweinchenwiese and highly recommend it. Hope some people find this comment helpful, it comes from a place of care and curiosity.

Being sentimental about a cage if it is not appropriate for your pet does not make sense. I'm sorry for your loss but you can always keep a store bought cage for traveling or in case of an emergency or if you find another animal in need or for short term fostering. The one I usually feed her and have no problem with is the Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition and it’s basically the 8lb bag. I haven’t seen any problems with I mean with her health or something abnormal. She’s a pretty picky she doesn’t even like carrots and I would give them to her and nothing she won’t touch them!! I would leave them at night and in the morning it’s still there she won’t touch them!! And well I do find that weird!! Any advice on how I can feed her carrots? Since that’s their main source for vitamin c!! She does eat green or red peppers she likes them and well half C there!!

Change the brand of pellets you use. I've been using the small pet select brand that Scotty talks about for 3 years and my guineas always eat it. I believe on the SPS website you can get a sample bag to try. All their products are a great quality.
