Tips are supposed to be a reward for service, not a paycheck - it's gotten out of hand - one way for customers to reverse this trend is to tip less, not more - employers will have to pickup the difference to retain staff - if you agree, stop tipping and reserve it only for exceptional service at say 10%

I am annoyed at this issue. Especially when buying to go. I bought shelf items and found myself facing the tip thing, the women behind the counter saw my annoyed expression and was so quick to press "no tip" (for me). . During COVID this was a way to sort of help out the stores. But tip-flation has just grown out of control and is quickly becoming a custom, to the point that I simply don't go to certain stores because I don't want to pay $14 for a latte and slice of banana loaf (including tip). . . At a Thai restaurant I got a fantastic meal (at a good price of about $12). I ordered a beer and an ice cream (price not listed). They gave me a mini tub of ice cream that was a bit too much for me. The beer price was not listed but when the bill arrived I notice the beer was $13 (more than the meal) and the ice cream was a whopping $40. What started as a budgeted $20 meal landed up being $65 plus tax AND they expected me to pay a tip on top of all that(I paid $0 tip).

This entire conversation their having is, "workers are being underpaid. Yet throughout this entire video, it is never expressed that companies should be paying their employes better, then relying solely on the customers to cover their employe wages."

I have an idea, why dont we just pay people enough to live and skip the tips???

The problem is that now it's creeping into other things that doesn't require tipping like takeout. People get offended that you don't tip when taking food to go or even in food courts where not big corporations but not local restaurants would pressure you to tip.

You completely lost me when you talked about minimum wage being a reason we should tip. It is not my responsibility to subsidize employers who are underpaying staff.

For decades the accepted tip was always 10%. And it was done almost surreptitiously, leave some cash for your server under a saucer so they weren’t embarrassed. A percentage on the inflated meal cost is still a percentage; it’s more money. I refuse to subsidize greedy restaurant owners who won’t pay their staff properly or be shamed into paying more by a look from a server. Boycott those establishments!

I dont live in a country that tips but i’d say “sorry, im not rich, i cant leave a tip everywhere i go. Im not your boss, i cant pay your salary.”

No need to tip. The customer is supporting the restaurant business, and they expect the customer to tip? The restaurant should be tipping the customer for coming in to support the restaurant business.

When I was in Thailand recently the tip for some restaurants was already included in the bill. Service fee or something like that.

In this economy, us choosing to spend are money in your establishment is us supporting your business and staff. Without customers, corners get cut, your staff gets laid off and you go out of business. Don’t add expecting a tip to the pile. We will either make it ourselves at home or find somewhere else where we aren’t expected to tip.

Some people earn less than the person who is working in the restaurant. If customer is happy with the service they can appreciate with a tip, which should be shared with the whole team. Tipping before service is offered doesn’t make sense to me.

I never tip tattoo artists. They are contractors, you agree on a price and pay it.

Consumers should tip based on the quality of the services received. Putting food in a bag for takeout - is that really a service? Most consumers seem to be more than happy to tip when they receive very good or excellent services. Anything less, thenn tips should not be expected by the person providing the service. A tip should not be "expected" - it needs to be earned, in my opinion.

Tip nothing. It's the business owner's job to put the proper cost of wages into food prices without playing this psychological manipulation game with customers. Tipping is nothing more than an excuse to under pay employees and no poor people shouldn't eat out less just because they can't afford tips. I used to deliver customer prescriptions for a Shoppers Drugs Mart in my youth. Never once got a tip for delivering potentially life saving medication yet it's customary to tip food delivery people. I didn't care either way, easiest job I ever had but it highlighted to me how weird tipping culture and etiquette is.

In Taiwan, many restaurants include 10% tips in the bill, and the policy was written on the menu. If you are disagree with the policy, just leave, no pressure at all.

It's getting insane!!!!!!!!!! even the liquor stores are expecting tips now!! WTF??? I would normally tip 10% on takeouts or a nice coffee IF that staff were really nice & friendly to me..... 15% at casual places like Boston Pizza and 18% at The Keg simply because of the levels of attention/service... but honestly 18% is a bit much..... but down south, the Americans are all doing/expecting it!!!

I tip for table service at restaurants, for food delivery, for haircuts, for cabs/ubers/etc, but not for all the self-serve stuff that we are being asked to tip for lately. On that note, some self-checkouts are now asking for tips, which is beyond ridiculous.

My mother's on a limited pension in Ontario her Landlord says he provides her with a service and wants a tip from her monthly. Mom is to received a new lease soon and is scared he will add tipping to her lease on top of rent.Wich she has not signed ) because he says to her, he expects a 18% gratuity every month for all the work he provides her. (On top of her rental payments.) Mom has called landlord and tenant board because she says this is unfair and unlawful. They too say it's unlawful, but asked, do you at least give landlord a gift every Christmas??? WTf?? Why ask that???? Tipping HAS gotten too out of control. In Ontario servers make $15.50 - $16.50 per hour.. and they still expect tips at take out and self serve places.. These big corporations need to pay staff living wages, however pensioners never get rate increases but get treated horribly when we don't tip or tip lower than 20% Tipping has to stop.. it will get to the point where ONLY 50% tip will be acceptable

It's definitely gotten out of control. I'm old school, typically tips were only given out at actual restaurants where the staff would give you a menu and wait on you - i.e. full service. I don't mind leaving a small tip of around 5% at coffee shops or fast food where it is not full service but expectations have gotten out of hand. Just the other day I ordered out pizza on half price Tuesday but they tried to base their tip on the full regular price plus tax plus delivery fee! I simply went to "custom tip" and calculated what 15% would be on the discounted price before taxes or delivery fees.

For delivery with Skip or Door Dash.... always be generous tipping 15% for the driver.... simply because you just don't want any unwanted 'extra stuff' in your food.... don't be naive and think that stapled packages must be 100% safe and most bags aren't stapled anyway...... !!

15% is a fair number I believe. I ordered 28 dollars worth of food tipped the driver 4 dollars and 50 cents which is 15%. There’s times I don’t tip though and I don’t feel bad about it. It’s optional not mandatory so don’t feel bad.

Tipping in Canada and North America is becoming more of a cultural thing now. However, there is the only time not to tip. I usually go to my typical Starbucks. When I pay in cash or debit card. They have a tipping option. Since the staffs knows me and always have never had a bad experience of that location. I do give me $1.00 tip minimum. If I order my Starbucks drink through the app; I do not need to tip. One time, I ordered Pizza Hut online and now they are asking to tip before it did not have that option. First of all, I am just grabbing the pizza and I am taking up my own time and gas of the vehicle to get to Pizza Hut for pick up. That is the time I don’t tip. I went to this local Brazilian business that sells this popular tear drop chicken bake called Coxinha. The man deep fried the coxinha, but then he was away from the kitchen hence it was too burned. He said he is going to fried another one for me. It was fined, but when I had a couple bites. The coxinha taste cold from the inside. I had their ball shape chocolate dessert called brigadeiros. I had it many times and the other time I took a bite and it taste dry. This is the time I don’t type. I went to this Vietnamese restaurant to pick up a few food. Why would I tip; if I am not dining at their restaurant and also they live in a big property and drives luxury German cars hence they are beyond rich. Starbucks is a billionaire company that can afford to pay for their employees a better living wage.

I usually use this rule when tipping. If I'm dining out, then I tip 15-18%. If I'm taking out, no tip. If I'm taking an Uber, 0-3$ tip depending on the comfortability of the ride. For other services, no tip.

I went on a Gray Line bus tour around Montreal during which the elderly gentleman guide, who was very knowledgeable about his home city, added that rents in the city were particularly cheap compared with other cities in the country. At the end of the tour he reminded us that tipping was customary in Canada & he depended on it as part of his salary. It seems odd to me that we tourists from poorer parts of the world should subsidise people in one of the richest nations. It's a con & a ripoff.

The rule is very simple... Tipped employees only make a couple dollars an hour and most of their salary is from tips. Like it or not, that's the system and they should not have to work for free. Therefore, if the person is a tipped employee (wait staff), then you tip them. However, if they are NOT a tipped employee (cashiers, hosts, emcees, managers, etc) then they should not be tipped. If they ask for a tip, they are double dipping.

If I sit in your restaurant and have you refill my water, my drink, clear my plate, bring me utensils, bring me ketchup...keep checking on me, I used your hydro and bathroom...I will tip but on the go...oh hell no. To Go is ridiculous...I took public transit or walked to get my order and bringing it home myself. I didn't sit in your establishment, I was there for a total of 4 minutes. A delivery to my place yes I tip. My hairdresser I tip. I will not tip for anything else.

Why do I need to tip for someone doing their job? Most of the time the server just takes the order and brings the food and that’s it. Servers now get paid same minimum wage. With due respect, minimum wage was never meant to be the “living wage”.

Tipping is not about the $amount. It is recognition for the service provided by the person serving you. Tip well if you're well served. Tip less or none if the service wasn't great. At the end of the day, the service staff should always be appreciated with not just tips. A compliment or a smile also goes a long way.

I can't afford a decent tip, but occasionally I'd like to go out for dinner. Should I be banned from eating out just because I'm poor? I think tipping should be done away with. They don't tip in Europe unless the service and food was excellent, if that. That's what tipping is supposed to be for- excellent service.

Tipping is such a scam.... there are SO many service industries that you would never tip for... Do you tip a fireman after they jaws of life you out of your car? Do you tip EMS after they save your grandmother? Do you tip a cop after they charge a rat who broke into your car? Do you tip a soldier who has emotional or physical injuries in service of their country?

They forgot to mention that restaurant servers pay4.5-7% of the bill to tip out the kitchen/ bartender. So if you don’t tip the waiter then theyre paying 4.5-7 % of your bill just to serve you. Restaurants with bigger bills like steak houses really suffer from this. This is happens so the restaurant can pay their kitchen staff under 20/h but give a little extra out of the tips the servers make
