the album is SUPPOSED to be through an antagonists perspective. and ultimately if you listen to the album in order, you see that he is the one that gets destroyed by his behavior in the end. it’s actually genius. house of balloons sets up the plot and shows how he enjoys his lifestyle. thursday shows the pain that the weeknd inflicts on valerie (the girl that fell for him), and echoes of silence shows that his actions ultimately end up destroying him and he is the one hurt in the end.

@Adam Beckner This. People always ignore that Abel has said in interviews that The Weeknd has always been a character. Also, his actions are constantly criticised in Trilogy
@AJXO-303 жыл бұрын
@@alvaroalejandroramirezrami874 I disagree tho, while I do think he can play a character really well. I think this was him during the phase of "being on the streets". His psychedelic descriptions of taking these drugs can't be simply played out. A line I just caught after some years was from XO/The host "Specially when your nose red from that K, special diet coke". He was talking about the drug ketamine 👀 I don't think the average person would know these type of drugs, specifically names like those. Normally there is a street name for it. So that led me to believe he has experiences with stuff like this. His description of the effects of certain drugs, like "Lying on the floor.....you can't breathe" shows me that he has some sort of experiences with it. I looked some of the side effects up and it was accurate, some of them are respiratory depressants. Etc. I'm rambling lol 😂 TO THE POINT: (MY INTERPRETATION) The weeknd described his encounter with different women that were basically depressed and on the street. In a song he says "Just don't blame it on me that you wanna come and party with a nigga like me", this tells me that some of them knew what they were getting into. I'm not justifying some of the things he did, I think he was 100% wrong, but he was a low life, so I could've understand his standpoint then when he made some of those songs. It's good that he has changed now, I think. I think his music was something different, dark, and new, that's why people gravitated to it. In a world where people were constantly singing about the "Happy-side" of love in rnb; this was definitely something different and an area that wasn't explored much at the time.

@xXHuntereyeXx3 жыл бұрын
Before I watch this, let me say this: I've only recently listened to Abel's entire catalogue and I must say that House of Baloons might be my favorite mixtape of all time, so I finally understood people's frustration with the score you gave it back then. However, I was also shocked to see you put trilogy in your top 200 albums of the decade, which is why I went back to your Echoes of Silence review in which you said that you thought Thursday was okay (since you did not review it at the time). So I was thinking that the remastered versions of the mixtapes on Trilogy might have had something to do with it, aswell as maybe the context of the mixtapes as one complete album. I'm curious to what the real answer is
@cheesecakelasagna3 жыл бұрын
Probably also the unfolding of the era that became the today's sound. And how serious Abel leaned into the dark aesthetic both sonically and image-wise, which made him look like one of the definitive catalyst of the movement. Reminds me of Ant's change of heart on M.I.A.'s MAYA album because Death Grips happened.

Let’s get a video like this on Mac millers “Swimming.” It has the highest dislike to like ratio on your channel, and it’s not just because were looking at it through a loss lens. It’s an incredible album and I’m so curious if your thoughts have changed with time. No disrespect, I love your videos - but I just have no idea how you interpreted “swimming” so negatively. Especially with how you reviewed “circles.” Like so Anthony can see, and hopefully address it.

Melon is just simply biding his time so that he can correct the heinous mistake he made years ago when originally reviewing this . Now he says he’s warmed up to it more, in a year hell be saying it was ahead of its time, and in 5 years hell be calling it the greatest album ever. He must correct his mistake and close the gaping hole in his soul.

Or maybe he just didn't like it back then. How can it be a "mistake" if he actually didn't like it. Dear yikes. Hope you're joking.

ngl i got so surprised when i found out ppl don't actually like this album. honestly there's just no one bad song, i listen to it back to back! lyric wise ur right but i tend to focus more on the beat. echos of silence is too dark i think but at the same time very mature

It's only Anthony who hated the album, it is widely regarded as a masterpiece by most

Trilogy is top-tier! Each mixtape is incredible for their own reasons. Echoes Of Silence is my personal favorite out of the three but House Of Balloons will always have a special place in my heart and defined the sound of dark R&B over the past decade

I was actually really hoping you would upload this one day. Edit: I also can’t be the only one that wants a Yeezus redux review.

Man, Yeezus together with Pablo was my biggest grower for Ye. I actually found both to be very unimpressive but after more and more listenings, it turned into a sobering experience for me, that musical perception can transform heavily over time.

Since I personally prefer Yeezus to all of Kanye’s albums (unless we are including Kids See Ghosts), I would like to see him come around on it, but if anything I think his opinion has soured on it more. He did name it Kanye’s worst project, in the worst-to-best, and I’m not sure if he would put it below Jesus Is King, tbf.

I'd be happy to see an "official" re-review of the project. Idgaf what score it gets I just wanna listen to your changing perspectives in an in-depth, track-by-track manner

well i'm glad to hear you're thoughts on this record. i remember seeing it pushed around 4chins when it came out and i didn't really get it. but recently i went back and listened and i really liked it, especially knowing now that The Weeknd went on to become soo huge it was cool to listen to his ambitious mixtapes.

Thanks a lot Anthony for this re-review! I'm a big Abel fan that loves House of balloons and was so happy when you posted this. Even though I still disagree with you on some things, I'm glad you came back to this project and saw some good in it!

I absolutely love every Weeknd song he’s released but I do agree with Anthony with liking Echos of Silence more than House of Balloons. Everything is legendary on the Trilogy but the Echos of Silence do have the most enjoyable songs.

Those lyrics were predatory AF and when I first heard it in 2011 I felt it was soulless. It definitely grew on me and I do think it was hugely impactful.

Would've liked hearing his thoughts on Thursday too, it tends to get shunted in terms of the three even though it might be the best of the lot. Barring one extremely long and tired song, it's perfect all the way through.
