Here I share my personal opinion regarding an old discussion, if Italians build better instruments compared to makers of other nations. While giving credit to German, French, and other nationalities and schools for their exceptional craftsmanship, I express my modest belief that Italian violins have an unique quality: Italian style.
Just as the world of fashion and cars, design is renowned for Italian elegance and beauty, the art of Italian violin making boasts a grandeur and beauty that is unmistakable. Join me as we explore the characteristics that set Italian violins apart and the captivating style that makes them stand out among the rest.
Throughout the video, I aim to foster a respectful and balanced conversation, acknowledging the excellence of violins from different countries while celebrating the distinct charm that Italian violin making brings to the table.
By sharing my perspective, I hope to inspire meaningful discussions on the artistry of violin making and the impact of national traditions in shaping musical instruments.
Meanwhile all the best from Cremona
Edgar

I have been collecting violins from London auctions for the past 30 years. Going by the auction trends I find the old Italian violins fetching the highest prices followed by the French. Modern Italian violins even by some well known makers do not fetch a good price in auctions at all, though they are sold for a high price in shops in the Far East

I am not an expert, I do not really know. I have a very good antique German instrument-replica of the Baltic Guarneri, I am happy with it.

Edgar, do string tension for a instrument has something to do with the thickness of the plates, a thicker plates instrument would need more tension on the strings to vibrate than a thinner plates instrument?? Excellent video 🙏🏻👏🏻

Dear Kalou Souza its not the plates only its the bass bar dimensions the soundpost dimensions and materials the end button materials and its surroundind ring or bezzle or lack there of etc.But I do tend to agree.

Thank you, Edgar. That question was in my mind all the time. It obvious that, there are differences between Italian, German & other violin makers. But what is the main goal that a violin maker is looking for? How much a violin maker balance between fabrication and sound? Thank you agin.

My violin happens to be Italian. Like you said, Italian violins have this unique"Italian" sound, which I really like. Maybe I'm biased, but I prefer the Italian sound. 😄

Hello Edgar, I have huge interest in making violins, however I do not know how to play one. How much do you need play in order to be successful at making them? I have noticed that have people test your violins for you, do you also play?

I’ll try to answer your question. I have a friend who’s a master guitar and ukulele builder. She can barely play either one, yet her instruments are highly valued.

In general I would tend to agree. However there are beautiful sounding instruments from all Countries. I famous maker may from time to time produce a clunker. The asymetry of the Italian instruments may be found in other countries. There may be some German instruments that have asymetic graduation of the plates it all depends on the maker.Not every BMW automobile is machined perfectly. There are blems produced occasionaly. There are fine instruments from all countries. But in general the golden period in Italian Renasance so I have been led to believe produced the finest sounding violins. In general I would agree.😅

I feel when we talk about Italian sound, there is sound of the past instruments which are velvety , round , most importantly human like..and then there is modern Italian sound which is more focused on filling up a large hall, very ringy - to me it's like scracting on a textured glass..not a fan..ofcourse there r exceptions..just my 2 cents.

I've seen some photos of famous vintage Italian Violins where it appeared that the F-holes were not the exactly the same height. I thought it might be some sort of photographic artifact, as dimensions are easily distorted depending on the angle of the lens to the object. Now I'm wondering if F-holes are sometimes at slightly different heights, and if that might even be intentional. Do you know?
@TheGotoGeek
@TheGotoGeek Жыл бұрын
It’s intentional. It can be seen on Stradavari’s patterns.

The asymmetry in f-hole placement is for acoustical properties for those who understand how violins work. For others, it’s sometimes called “free-form” making.

Do Italians make better violins than e.g. Austrians, Germans, ...? I have a theory: In Italy there grows lots of good wine. Where plenty good wine grows there grows plenty culture. Where plenty culture grows it tends to pile up. In such an environment there is the potential of generating freedom to experiment. Experimenting is the basis to find the best results. Ergo: Good wine = good violins.

What makes a violin Italian in the way Master Edgar speaks is the Italian School of Violinmaking, which have different characteristics to other Schools ( which he describes differences towards the end of the video).
