Karina Peters Sorry but your analogy is kinda far reaching. Same events like 9/11 are now a rare to non existent circumstance and it's probability is highly highly unlikely. So not letting foreigners in or not let people in from specific terrorist origin countries is actually a good thing. Also there has never been an incident (As I know of) where a plane from one country full of bombs has traveled to another country.

Rik Rocks what about this week's bombing in the Russian subway? or what happened in nice, France? those incidents have happened within the past year. to say that they are rare I feel is not true. However i do agree with foreigners or not, terrorism will happen. the Olympics have always been a target for terrorism. Any time anyone hosts the Olympics, they always beef up security.

Yeah, really. When you're too afraid to do something because of terrorists, you're letting them win. The best way to combat them at home is to set up reasonable and unobtrusive security and go about your daily lives. Refuse to be afraid.

Rik Rocks, most recent incidents of terrorism were from domestic terrorists, not foreigners. Being overly restrictive to travel won't help.

While hosting large events like the Olympics can be a financial burden on the country, I still think that it's an important event that can also help maintain largely positive relationships with other countries, and it can also help with tourism which is always great for local economies.

I live in East London, about 10 minutes' bus ride away from the Olympic Park. Before the 2012 Olympics, many people here were sceptical and negative, but when it happened we loved it, the sceptics included. And in the years following, many improvements were made to our local area. I think the truth is that where the Olympics are held in cities which are already rich, further improvements will be seen in those cities' less wealthy areas, but where they take place in smaller, less wealthy cities overall, the cost will be too much and can burden those cities unacceptably for years. I have no such worries about Tokyo. As a Londoner, I was delighted when I heard Tokyo had been awarded the Olympics, because I know you can afford them, and that it will be a good opportunity for development of one or more of the less developed areas of your city - and frankly, because as an Olympics fan, I can't wait to see what kind of technology you use your famed Japanese ingenuity to invent for the occasion. I look forward to it!

It's different in my opinion because London is already a melting pot, used to foreigners, with countless accommodation choices. I wonder if tokyo can even accommodate so many thousands of visitors. I have been there few times and it's not like you find a hotel in every corner but I guess many people will have to go to less central areas. Back to the London topic, I wonder if olympics meant a benefit for Stratford. Prices have been increased, especially rent. By re-defining the area as zone 2, it is basically more expensive. I guess that is good if you are the owner of a property. In addition, the area has become dangerous (riots, people assaulted on the streets, etc) and a target for terrorism. Westfield has been evacuated many times out of threats. I am sure the Olympics provided some significant income and might have encourage tourism for a while after the event but i can't really see how London is supposed to have improved in the long run.
@russetmantle1
@russetmantle1 7 жыл бұрын
Good to hear your comment, thanks. Do you think "riots" is quite the right word to use here? I live in Leyton, just next to Stratford. My area is not more dangerous. Maybe you get some youngsters being rowdy, but there aren't riots really, are there? In Leyton we've had Legacy money coming down to us and shop owners being given money to spruce up their shopfronts so that the whole place looks much prettier now, and that happened after, not before, the Olympics, as a result of the legacy money being invested. I hear your comment about London being a melting pot already, but I don't think that's essential for a good Olympics. Before the Olympics, we all thought there wouldn't be enough accommodation for everyone who wanted some, but there was, even though it's true the hotels all ramped their prices up at the time. I have confidence in Tokyo being able not just to cope, but actually to ace this.

I'm against it too. Japan currently has many more important issues to deal with, and throwing so much time, energy, and resources into a 2-week event should simply not be on the list. Declining marriage and birth rates? Workaholism? Ageing population (further impacted by a low marriage and birth rate)? Living costs? These are things that should be addressed.

Dual-Citizen here. My experience growing up in both Japan and America. America: "If you are going to come here, learn the language." Japan: "We're having English people coming here, we gotta get better at learning English for our guests"
@acedia4454
@acedia4454 7 жыл бұрын
And both are correct in this situation. A lot of people will come to japan and they all have different languages. The most common one is english, so if u want to communicate with most of them, u should learn english. But if u travel to an english country (for living purpose), u should learn english instead of expecting everyone to know japanese. u have to consider the situation.
@thinBillyBoy
@thinBillyBoy 7 жыл бұрын
We are all taught English in school, it's a way for people to communicate internationally and on the internet, so the English language is a necessity or at the very least a VERY useful tool if you like to travel and converse with people across the globe, work in tourism or watch movies and read books that hasn't been translated into your native tongue. I don't think it's fair to the Americans to expect them to learn that many languages because of the whole melting pot thing and it's not that necessary for them. They learn Spanish mostly from my understanding because it's relevant to some (you tell me), though of course the arrogance is uncalled for.

at least most locals are supporting rather than against, which are very important. as for renovation, eventually you still have to renovate , just a matter of time. and i think japan will not let their new stadium to waste, future international/national sport events will be organize there. BUT, strict regulation is a must, not just visitors, ATHLETES too(which sometimes cause more trouble than supporters)

No Olympics in modern times, except 1984 Los Angeles has made money. So Yuta-san is correct. Japan will probably have a net loss of around 300 billion Yen. This is money that could be spent on many more important things. I think it is also a loss that the old stadium was destroyed to make a place for the new one. It would have been really Classic to have it in the 1964 stadium. That stadium had rich history and was an important symbol in Japan's emergence as a world power. What they are building now will never capture that. It is more opulent. But it will never have the same soul. A lot of the people talked about tourism. I think they will be BADLY disappointed with the results. When I went to Japan it was because I wanted to see Japan -- NOT because I wanted to see wrestling! The tourists will be a lower class of people than Japan is used to hosting. Loud. Rude. Rowdy. All the things Japan is not! The security concerns are not trivial. It will not be possible to do completely effective screening. Being a very civilized people the bad elements won't find they can pick up cases of explosives on the black market. And Japan's borders are VERY easy to control. So the best hope is that those that would do mischief will be unable to obtain their weapons of choice. So a large scale terrorist event is quite unlikely. Being a first world country with one of the highest standards of living on the planet I worry a lot of Japanese are so insulated from the bad elements of the world they are unable to relate to the dangers. On the plus side there are very few countries with a grudge against Japan. So there is less motivation to do harm - beyond the simple goal of messing up the Olympics. The Olympics will be a net negative for Japan and it's people. But likely not tragically so.

@FlorianWernerJapan

I think that might be a little mistranslation on Yutas part. He says "もういっぱい来ているから、いいんじゃないですか。そんな変わらないから。。。" which would be more like (literally): "Isn't that okay, since there are already a lot of them COMING here, so there won't be much of a change." So in the context he is not talking about some kind of long-term staying foreigners, but instead about a lot of foreign tourists already coming to Japan. And as long as you're in the big cities and / or most famous spots (especially including Tokyo), he is not that far off.

I say this as someone who's worked as a professional Japanese interpreter and translator for 2 years now. That isn't a mistranslation on Yuta's part. In fact, it's more of a misinterpretation on your end. もういっぱい来てる translates to "many of them [外人] are already here". Another way to think of it could be すでにいる 来てる, and 行ってる by the way, are subtle like that. 来てる means to come (and still be here). 行ってる means to go (and still be there). The 〜て form + いる doesn't always make the English gerund, "-ing".

While hosting the Olympics is a great honor i think the money would be better spend on more important issues. People are forgetting about Fukushima way to often for example. There are still a lot of people who lost their home, don't have a job and the area around it isn't really suitable for living there anymore. Of course it's still a great opportunity to learn a language better but i also don't think that many people will approach foreigners and actually try to talk to them in english. At least not more than the usual. Anyway i hope everyone will be able to enjoy the event and that nothing bad happens :)

This was very interesting. I'm not sure about the returns from hosting the Olympics either. You can't change a country in three years for an international event that lasts 10 days. "A lot of foreigners" - in Tokyo. There are a lot of them in Tokyo and other major cities. It only seems a lot but in the context of the entire country it's not even 1 per cent. Obviously there's a lot of risks for the influx of foreigners, but nothing that a little communication can't fix.

Just a tad. It's a lot like American English, how it's different in different regions but with just a little knowledge about some things you can understand most natives in the country. It's not like China or even the middle east.

it strange. I have to speak a lot of Spanish in America, because I run a side business at the flea market. I also can say a few words in German and French. 勿論, 日本語も出来ます. it just seems natural to have people around me speaking other languages. feels somehow sad they do not experience this.

I would expect many conflicts and chaoses stemming from cultural differences during the Olympics. The majority of people going to Japan now is either for business or travel. I would think that the behaviours of those who are on a business trip usually are restrained by their work ethics or by their company's reputation, and those who travel for leisure purposes are often interested in Japan, thus they more or less have some respect to Japanese culture. However, people who will travel to Japan during the game are primarily there for the Olympics I suppose, not particularly interested in Japan. Particularly when Japanese culture is quite different than western culture, I would anticipate much of subconscious or unintentional violation of social norms.

I can understand why might people be against it but the main reason for it to occur was for countries to unite. And also it does have a profit because many tourists come and spent money helping the economy greatly...well that is how I see it.

Even though the Olympic Games are expensive, it's such a great event with lots of peoples and sports. It's a great chance to show your country to the world and enjoy extraordinary sport performances. Athletes get a once in a lifetime oppurtunity to win glory in their home country. The Japanese should embrace it. As a Norwegian, I'm disappointed we didn't manage to apply for Oslo 2022.

There are both pros and cons to each side. I don't care much for sports, but hosting the Olympiad is an opportunity for a country to show off its technology and infrastructure. It's also an opportunity to develop new technology and infrastructure. A downside is the cost associated with the development and preparations. All in all, I am slightly in favor of it.

Norway declined hosting the Olympics because there was public outrage some here called it a waste of money, and we are one of the richest countries in the world. Japan currently owes twice the amount of its GDP and this will only add to the debt I agree with Yuta here.

I'm actually very excited for it to be in Japan. As an fan of japanese culture (I'm American btw) I thought Yuta would be eager to share Japan's culture with the world. In my opinion the Olympics are the best way to share your culture . The whole world will be watching and I feel Japan is going to be a great ambassador for the Olympics.

Ricardo De Leon Although I appreciate you thinking America is the world, what I meant was for Japan to share it's culture with the world not the world share it's culture with Japan. Being in America and growing up in the 80's Japan had a heavy influence in our pop culture and I just think stuff from Japan is cool as hell. we live in a different world now where there are parts of world who haven't had that same exposure to Japan's culture. I think the world will benefit from having Japan showcase how dope of a country it is .

Considering I am working with my company and my friends to go live there soon, I am actually against it right now myself. I agree with you Yuta about how it's not going to be making money but spending money, and I think while it will be exciting to sports fans, if the city has problems with all the foreigners, it could prove a problem for me too... selfishly, of course. But It's not up to us... let's just hope everything stays safe and they don't spend TOO much money on this. (hmmm...)

Past Olympic games have proven that if they're run correctly, the host country can make an enormous amount of money. There's not really any basis for saying "I don't think the Olympics will turn a profit" and leaving it at that.

I think the actual Olympics are fun, in theory. Watching the competitions and the spirit of the athletes. But I think a lot of countries end up losing money in the end. Athens and Rio in particular have reported some deep financial losses after hosting. But I guess we'll see.....

Yutas comment at the end was funny. Japan has enough money to afford it easily the Olympics are always a waste of money but it's a spectacle for the whole world and it only comes every 4 years. Japan normally has good showings and they'll probably do even better on their home turf (like every country).

Well I haven't been to Japan, I'll admit, but from talking to a few Japanese-American out here in the States, as well as interviews (like Yuta's videos) and people who say they live/lived in Japan, I get the impression they might be a little *too* independent and/or traditional. I know what it's like having to deal with lots of foreigners that cause problems or are far from being relatable people, but I've found it's good in the long run that you do get those occasional, yet uncomfortable clashes of culture. Helps pave they way for newer ideas and views of current and next generations. I see things in big pictures, but like I said, it's just my collective speculation of Japan.
