Nothing better than chilling by your pond and hand feeding your fish and then watching them cruise round, whilst you sip your cold beer. I'm with Chip, the fish you raised from tiny to huge builds such a bond. My biggest and oldest was 1.5 inches when I bought her and over 38 years later, she's pretty much 3 feet long, is very tame and so much a part of my life. So much has happened in my life, but she's been with me since my teens...!

Going on one of your first points about how tame carp can be and how you can train them and they recognise you. You'd be surprised how you can do the same with pike. A few years back I filmed a pike taking deadbaits (hookless) under water. A couple days later I found the same fish and did the same again. Then again a day later and the day after that.... I skipped a couple of days and went back to the swim and and looked all over the pike was no where to be seen. I started wading took maybe 3 or 4 steps and look down and the pike was literally sat at my feet. The moment I dropped a bait in it instantly smashed it on the surface. The fish obviously recognized me for free food by this point. Much in the same way a carp would do it in a garden pond... probably wouldnt put my fingers in its mouth though

Most fish can! and can tell who in particular is coming in the room. They're not smart exactly, but they've got fairly good memories of people.
@dancingnature2 жыл бұрын
My goldfish did that too. Recognized me and only signaled to me that he (? ) wanted to be fed. Completely ignored my kids.
@EarthshakerOnamazu Жыл бұрын
@@jessehunter362 Not entirely true, small, aquarium sized fish like my tetras, gourami, rosy minnows, and corydoras catfish don't seem to mind who comes up to the tank, they always seem to recognize you as a food source, because all they see is large, blurry figures approaching the tank through the glass.
@jessehunter362 Жыл бұрын
@@EarthshakerOnamazu My mollies can tell it’s me over the others in my house, but it might be that some of the other things in my house try to startle them and they need to judge threats
@kosmokat111 Жыл бұрын
@@EarthshakerOnamazu my betta seems to be able to recognise me over my partner, it makes sense since I'm the one who usually feeds her, and I spend more time with her during the day. she'll still come to the glass and inspect my partner, but will effectively get fish zoomies when she sees me. I think her eyesight is at least good enough to help them see faces, as my partner and I have very similar builds and wear similar clothes around the house. as for visual range she can see me from about 5m away from the tank glass, it's really impressive and almost spooky as she'll come right up to the glass and stare as soon as she sees me lol.

This guy you visited was such a nice bloke, and what a wonderful garden/pond he has. Done a very good job of it with a great setup. The fish on the other hand are absolutely phenomenal..they are massive and look stunning. He does a very good job keeping them healthy. Really good fishumentary lads. Looking forward to seeing your own pond installation updates in future videos.

First off guys that was a treat. Very nice video. Your friend Chip is a star and a real gentleman. Second thing is do a bit of research into Oscar ciclids. Believe me they learn who is who and respond like dogs to you entering the room but they don't play nice with smaller fish (they tend to eat them). To answer a question someone asked in the comments earlier. The reason the plecs survive is because Chip heats his pond as you can see at the 8min 18 sec point in the video. I have to reiterate great vid. Cheers.

Hahahah “the thing you do is send your wife to America, and work like there is no tomorrow and there you go you’ve got a beautiful pond” wow that is a brilliant strategy! Carl and Alex your videos just keep getting better!! I never knew I wanted a koi or go looking for mushrooms so much until I watched your hobbies videos! Keep them coming✌🏽

My dad started selling tropical fish in 1948...yes before they were imported specialising in siamese fighters. We grew up surrounded by fish. He loved Koi and had a similar pond himself. He said that what made them different from every other fish he had kept was the fact you never knew what they would do next. He spent hours trying to figure it but never did.

I once visited a school mate that had a large koi pond dug into the garden. The fish were so calm and nice. If you stuck your hand in the water they would all come to you. They would let you pet them and kind of rub against you like a cat almost. Of course they loved to be fed.

I wasn’t a big fan at first but grown to love your channels, worked out which one is which and love the friendly banter. The tutorials are super good, helped me with chods and changed a few things I do. Id love to see you do a few urban approaches like Alan Blair does with park lakes etc. The likes of syndicate waters etc are boring, waters anyone can fish are good, makes you seem less “southern posh kids” 😝😝😝 thanks for the content boys.

Honestly koi are great fish and I've kept some before and still have one... But the problem is they move the substrate looking for food which in turn makes the water cloudy and murky and algae blooms start... So you need a good filtration and if ur looking forward to keep them, do a bare bottom pond or aquarium.... But if it's a Natural koi pond then its fine...

when were kids in the 80's, we would fish all the local lakes within a few hour bike ride and catch bluegill, crappie, catfish, bullhead and channel, carp, and bring some of the best looking home from the various ponds in 5 gallon buckets with a battery operated pump to keep them alive. We figured the best of the best from each pond, then feed them the best foods, live crickets, meal worms dough, red worms, night crawlers, minnows etc along with tropical fish foods and vitamins. grow them big and strong, then stock out favorite pond with them and start again. In our minds, we were breeding the best of the best. We called them van dam fish :-) We had a blast. fed them 1" soft shell crayfish also. got them from a local creek.
