In my experience laptops benefit much more from being raised somewhat so that their in built coolers can suck air easier, than from outside cooling. Unless you are talking about big time cooling. Last summer just to test I put a big fan (the one you use to cool down yourself in summer) under my laptop, and it actually managed to cut down the temps by 10c while blender rendering. So in my experience coolers do work in theory. Just not in the small form factor they are sold in.

so true, those things do not have enough power to make a difference, but then again sparing a full sized fan for that purpose is kinda hard

That's what I did. Put a real fan underneath my old laptop, because at that time I was so poor, I just grabbed the fan that I already had. It worked very well. But overall it looks ugly. I thought a laptop cooling fan would be better, that's why I watch this video. Apparently it is not.

100% if you ever plan to game with the laptop on your lap you will NEED a cooling pad. Period. I’ve always been a laptop gamer and I’ll say without a doubt if you don’t use the pad your thermals will be way above 80 degrees on your lap easily after an hour of gaming. I suggest you do your research and compare benchmarks of various pads. Klim mistral is a good one

Correction: The direction of the fan blow is going in from the bottom and blows out in the sides or top. That is the direction of the blow. So installing a cooling pad below your laptop helps as long as the direction of the fan blow is going to towards the bottom of the laptop. You will notice a slight difference if you are using a cooling pad connected to a 5Volt source. Solution: buy a fan with 12Volts external source and you will notice a great difference in temp and blow strength. 😊 Just my experience so far.

This video was actually very informative. The first pad I bought didn't actually have a fan I bought it for my first quad core laptop which had a huge battery. But it would get hot so I was thankful that I had bought this thing from HP with it it was just a tray that it could sit on when I was working at my lazy boy. And it had a tray that would come out to put a mouse on it if I didn't want to use a trackpad. But it didn't do much to improve cooling because the heat still came up through the keyboard. I'm of the opinion that investing in cooling inside the laptop is maybe worth it from an experience standpoint. But I had to like this video for the Takagisan reference

The best cooling pads are the raised aluminum ones with 1 or 2 fans in the middle. It gives you the height needed to pull in the most air and doesn't blow air into your exhaust but centrally which is where infrared shows most of the heat anyways.

Ok. This confirm what i thought well suspected already. As even in PC cases Mid Tower or smaller you can get temps high if there is no good exhaust fans in. Even better inatake and out take fans... Same is here. If you guys wanna good fans make sure to use ones with 4 wires. So it support PWM (fourth wire control fan speed based on temperature sensor)... in nutshell... Also see Specs about dB levels (noise). If you guys want cooling pads that are silent use passive ones. Right build material can have heat absorbing qualities or even models with additional thermal solution. There is talk about it on net so search. It really depends on the model you have. In most models nowadays the exaustor are at the back and sides of the laptop and the intakes are at the bottom, so if you blow wind under there it actually helps quite a lot with the airflow. But if the exaustor is on the bottom, or if you have no intakes at all on the bottom, a pad will not help you out by any means. laptop stands only help if you have inlets or outlets at the bottom, if all your holes are on the side/back, it makes no diference whatsoever

i have found a laptop cooling pad with 3 adjustable fans, my intake is on the right hand side on the bottom, and my exhaust vent on the left also on the bottom. i believe if i switch the left side fan on the cooling pad to blow the opposite direction to the right side ones, it will blow air in the intake while also sucking air from the exhaust. therefore, upping airflow heavily.

Here's my take. I had a single fan cooling pad from Cooler Master first. My first cooling pad. Never had a stand. My laptop vent the heat out from the back and sucks it in form the bottom. So in my use case the cooling pad was on point. However I felt moderately dissatisfied. It wasn't dust or clogging. I can open my laptop and service it myself just fine with the fans, ram, hdd, battery replwc, cleaning etc. Some time later I bought another cooler master but this one had 4 fans. Unfortunately the air it blows is nowhere near enough. Perhaps it's just how low quality the cooling pads have become lately. Seems like the actual good stuff starts at close to $80-100. Which may not be the right price margin for most people and consequently most would face disappointment. Personally taking a strong wire or perforated mesh and attaching pc cabinet fans at the bottom of them while rigging them up to an external power source seems the best solution cooling wise but the comfort of having it in your lap would be gone. I guess that's the tradeoff here.

A cooling pad is absolutely not for blowing air into the laptop, it is for cooling down under trays setup for passive cooling, and that is the absolute best way to describe it. You can mod passive cooling into your under tray if its aluminium BTW, this will give you results if done right. Its really important to understand how laptops often cool to ultimately answer this question. A gaming laptop for example will typically require more cooling so designers of the laptop often have them use metal under trays which have copper connecting thermal pads (thermal pad looks like bluetac, its effectively a type of tape that transfers heat, its used for component cooling in laptops, it is not the same as the cooling pads in question) from the CPU/GPU onto the underside of the laptop tray (similar to how the old school mac books pros did it), this burns the absolute crap out of your legs however when paired with one of these desk fans does actually make a difference. Most general purpose laptops wont have a cooling setup like this due to how uncomfortable it is for the user, theyl just have two blower fans and all the heat is dissipated through those, if you use a cooling pad on this it absolutely will not make any difference. Its all about removing heat and a fan blowing cold air into the underside of your laptop when the laptop fans are doing the exact same thing at likely a higher RPM (so likely the pad just restricts air) and not through passive disipation is absolutely useless, if it wasnt then every desktop PC company, every server would have fans stacked 5 ontop of eachother, its just not how it works. Its really hard for me to describe what im getting at here unless youve taken apart and seen many different models of laptop, but basically if you have an aluminium under tray to your laptop you can stick thermal pads between that and the CPU / GPU, itl make the part of the laptop that sits on your knee burning hot however when used in conjunction with a cooling pad, that is when you'll actually see a difference. The heat is inside the laptop and youve got to remove it. If you have the heat travel to the bottom tray of the laptop then a cooling pad makes a difference.

Yes and no. Providing a higher volume of air at a faster rate to the intake fans will help with active cooling, not much but it will be effective. Blowing cool air across the entire bottom of the laptop will help with passive cooling which also provides benefits. Three or four large high volume slow(ish) turning fans will provide the most benefit with the lowest noise. In this case he was really CPU limited and the cooling wasn't going to provide much benefit. If he had a more up to date laptop that was truely thermal throttling then most of these solutions would have helped some. You could put liquid nitrogen on an old laptop and get little to no beneift when running the latest version of Blender because the cpu itself is the limit.

A cooling stand will work much better, on a gaming laptop with large openings at the bottom. The fans suck air from the bottom a squeeze it out to the back and/or the side, under a closed office type laptop it can not work so well, of course. If you only have 1 or 2 openings at the bottom the best cooler needs to be directly under the fans blowing fresh air into, otherwise it will not work. And you have to compare the temperature differcence under the same workload at idle. If the laptop is cooler, the processore under stress will likely not throttle so much, but almost reach the same temperature as before, so you could think the coler does nothing, but it does.

The only cooling that actually works in a laptop is opening the thing up, changing the thermal paste, cleaning the dusty fans and exhaust, elevating the laptop, and if u can, use one of those small USB fans and make it blow the hot air that's coming out of the laptop, away from it to the sides. Works like a charm.

@@ikemanproductions7762 it's a tiny USB fan that you plug into the laptop, and adjust so that it blows the hot air away from the PC..you can type it in AliExpress it should show up. This is anecdotal, but for me I notice improvement.

In my opinion, a better way to cool down a laptop is to make a specialized attachment to connect to the exhaust and attach a fan and modify the cooling system. For what I did when I was poor and still am poor is put my laptop on top of the AC vent. But these is highly risky for your pc. Only do these if you can add a thin cloth

It's not always about the fans they do like 20% of the job, what you need is elevation. I'm also using a Legion 5 mainly for gaming and when my cooling pad legs broke (it was a cheap one like 20$ Thermaltake v20) I've been using it like that for a while but the difference is massive, my laptop started heating up a lot even in short sessions, when I bought a new cooling pad temps got back to normal.

laptops exhaust hot air on the sides, not the bottom, the vents under the laptops are intake vents, and hot air rises so putting exhaust vents under the laptop makes no sense and can even make it hotter. Propping the laptop up helps fresh air circulate under the laptop, that's is why cooling pads have fans on the bottom of the laptop to help push the air toward the intake vents, but since most cooling pad fans aren't fast enough so it doesn't help much. I have friend who made a custom cooling pad using CPU cooler fans and it made his laptop drops to 45-48 degrees when he game

Surely if a laptop has an exhaust then it also has an intake right? Air doesn’t magically blow out of the laptop. I suppose if the intakes are on the bottom of the laptop then a cooling pad might work like the AC of a car

Cooling pads provide more than just cooling. In most cases, cooling pads will make an unnoticeable temperature difference. However, they can still provide: 1) A first line of defense from dust or create a space away from a surface that might become dusty. ie. a desk that you solemnly dust. The fans on the cooling pad will collect dust before getting to the fans of your computer. 2) Add a viewing better angle. Most cooling pads can be angled or raised and make it a lot easier on the neck. Looking down at a laptop definitely takes a toll on the back and neck over time.

Hi there! I have a laptop with no fan just bare copper plate directed at its cpu so I bought a cooling pad that has a stand and yes my vents is on the side however what I did is instead of directly blowing air to the laptop I flipped the fan so that heat will be directed at the bottom which did good however I dont know if it will work for other units.

I have an acer aspire 7,i gamed the hell out of it as it had an gtx1650, i didn't pay attention to the airflow or temps ,then the heating issues started, after replacing thermal paste, adding another 8gig stick of ram,i understood the importance of laptop stands, got one of those cheap aluminum once on Amazon, and undervolted my cpu via throttlestop, now the laptop runs a bit cooler.tldr:- pay attention to the thermals and airflow.i wish i have known these things beforehand.

From the research I've seen, cooling pads can reduce the temperature but only by about 4° or 5° Celsius. So that's nice. But it's not significant especially for the extra noise

I have a Razer Blade 15 Advanced and I want a to buy a cooling pad or fan not to improve the performance or lower the CPU/GPU temperature (since the laptop already does a really good job), but to cool the aluminum chasis... Aluminum laptops do benefit of having a cooling pad or fan to cool the chasis off, since they can get quite hot while playing heavy games. And since the chasis works as a passive cooling system, its a win win
