As a United fan, we have been lucky on many occasions this season and it's remarkable we have achieved what we have results-wise. Those of us that have watched every game know that we are STILL a counter-attacking team, particularly against anyone half-decent that can keep the ball. So from a stylistic POV, there is little to no improvement. The +4 goal difference eludes to the fact we have narrowly won games, and generally got battered in our bad performances. My concern is the constant default to spending more money and "recruiting your way" out of problems. United will always be there or thereabouts due to the luxury of spending 100-150m net a season every season. Very few teams can match that, and eventually it will make you competitive. There's merit in that of course, but if you make it an arms race to buy the best players, you reduce progression to £££ in one way or another (i.e. what is the point of hiring a supposedly world class coach?). We literally got outplayed, out-thought, out-managed and out-fought by a team that was fighting for relegation 18 months ago - AFTER spending 200m in the summer. That alone should strike alarm bells for United fans - not this season - but for next season as I think lots of people really think we have progressed more than we actually have.

Hopefully this ends any speculation of McTominay to Newcastle.

There has been improvements, that much is clear to see. We are no longer getting pasted at home, for a start. The disasterclasses are coming all away from home. The issue is the same issue it was last season - the midfield can't hold the ball. With Eriksen and Cas, we're good. With any other combination, we're not. Players still have a problem with wilting under pressure - something that Ten Hag was never going to solve in just one season - and we just struggle to control a game. However, last season we had less points, and were out of every cup by now. At least we have some form of silverware this season. Finally. Considering I'd have predicted us finishing 6th before the season began, I'm still not that annoyed. It's as though we had a run of crazy good form that convinced us we're better than we are, and now we're playing as we expected them to play before the season. But considering Arteta's Arsenal were getting pasted by 5 regularly against the top teams in his first few seasons, and look where he is now, think it's foolish to start throwing fingers at Ten Hag.

They have been hugely over-hyped while Ten Hag has restored some pride to what was a shambolic squad. He has done an excellent job but United are still coming up short against the very best. City hammered them at the Etihad and were victims of a bizarre refereeing decision in the return fixture. An inconsistent Liverpool had a great day against them in the seven-nil thrashing and although ETH has made them hard to beat, they are one of the pack of chasing clubs that may finish 3rd - 8th.

Only 2 new signings in the Man Utd team. Majority of that XI have been letting Man Utd down for years. A squad overhaul is needed and the carabao cup win papered over that. As soon as the going gets tough the majority of the players disappear. 2 loan signings in January. Weghorst is like playing with 10 men. ETH must have some responsibility for that. But as long as the Glazers are in charge nothing will change. Man Utd will probably go on some sort of run of form but it’ll always end up back in this situation with this current set of players.
