Do motorized faders make DAWs better? Ableton Live and Presonus FaderPort 8 Review

I’m a big fan of faders because you can control more than one parameter at a time with one hand - but do motorized faders make a difference?
FaderPort 8 was designed for Studio One and its integration with Live is based on the MCU standard.
In this video I explore how well this integration works, what the limitations are, and what it’s like to use Live with this kind of interface.

This is a great walk through. Thanks! I've had a FaderPort 8 for a few months now. I use it with Logic Pro X, and like Ableton, there are a few quirks, but nothing too serious. I do love having physical faders to work with. I now tend to work more with my ears, than always looking at the screen, which is a big plus.

The FaderPort is going to be my next purchase. I use a mix of Studio One 5 Professional and Ableton Live. Found your video on researching how well it works with Ableton. Great demo! I want to save up enough to get the Faderport 16, but i would be happy with the Faderport 8 as well. I obviously knew how well it works with Studio One, but after seeing how well it works with Ableton as well, now im completely sold on it. Thanks for the very detailed video. 😁

Thank you for this detailed review. Most of times, I only use it to write volume automation in StudioOne4. SO4 more like regular song arranger and mixer, Live more like real time acting and performming, so FP8 seems more powerful in live after watch your review. However, I think 8 faders are a little bit short of faders for large mixing, once your project end up with 7~80 tracks or more(drum may fill up 10 tracks or more). FP16 will be a real arsenal despite price and it can be finally placed in front of keyboard(Now I'm placing FP8 behind my keyboard, have to reach out my arm everytime I touch the faders).

i completely agree.. With the YT gadget review thing.. we often neglect the Music, which is what it is all about, in the end. i’ve said it before, but i’ll say it again _ I dig your musicality Ziv. It’s kind of a pity that your music doesn’t get to shine in the same spotlight your usually flawless reviews do. i’m glad you gave it room to breath, on this one. ;)

coming from the 707/MPCs thing into this one, i find this to being another rabbit hole.. :P maybe this PreSonus partnered with an APC Mini or sth similar...would make a great Ableton interface center piece controller..to complete the MIDI instruments i use.. I seem to need , or want..sth the market is not providing... A way to have a more hands on approach to ableton , but instead of focusing on sampled based music..actually going with VSTs and live playing &recording. i wonder what ppl like Elise Trouw use, when mixing and arranging...at home.

You get what you pay for, I had the same dilemma I was gonna get the Behringer because it was cheaper but my Sweetwater sales engineer talked me out of it for the Presonus faderport 8, I'm glad he did. A fellow audio engineer bought a Behringer about the same time I did about two years ago, his gave him a lot of set up problems and frustrations, then finally died before its time, the Presonus is still going strong. Now that the Presonus series iii mixers are bigass control surfaces too, you can find used ones at great prices. The fader port 16's are going down in price too. I'll sell you mine since I got the studiolive 24 I don't need it now lol.

I see this as a valuable companion to the Push 2. I love the deep integration of Push but I don't like mixing with it. I would probably never use the Faderport's plugin manipulation, but that doesn't make it less valuable to me. There's something about faders that map almost unconsciously to levels for me, so that I mix with my ears instead of my eyes. Mixing on Push, on the other hand, is very much a visual experience for me.
@fourcandlesmusic
@fourcandlesmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree re: plug in manipulation. Push2 is pretty hard to rival for intuitive plugin editing! I've also tried mixing on the Push and it just doesn't feel right using rotaries. I've ordered the FaderPort 16 today, wonder if the niggles with Ableton have been ironed out yet....

Yes, yes they do. I use the Icon QCon Pro. Not only does it make it more tactile (by touching actual faders instead of using a mouse), it can be used for controlling plugin parameters as well. When switching between plugins, each knob position is automatically matching placement with the faders.

spot on, as always-thanks! question: if we ran the Arturia V collection (that you got me hooked on!) as plugins in Live, couldn't we use the faderport to map and navigate the synth's various controls as plugins, and not have to exit, power off, and reboot in midi mode? I'm looking for a midi knob/fader controller for the V collection without buying a new keyboard and this seems like it could work for that, plus all it's uses for Live...
@loopop
@loopop 5 жыл бұрын
MIDI mode here wouldn't help you - you'd still be controlling 8 parameters. The way I would use this with V collection is by using Analog Lab as a container. Then you could choose which 8 Analog Lab parameters you'd want to control, and then you could always dive in to the actual synth. BTW Arturia keyboards are of course great controllers for AL with more than double the 8 parameter controls here

Thx Loop...yet another informative gem. Was happy to stumble into onto this one as I've been on the hunt for a solid mixing surface for Live as well as a MIDI parameter control surface. This one never made the cut as its always seemed too bulky compared to the Behringer, Softube, or Avid artist series..all of whom have their own Ableton challenges unfortunately . From what I've learned they all have work arounds ...ie various inefficiencies. My biggest gripe with the Presonus has been it's size. It's not half as clean as the Avid Artist or even close to the Softube Fader surface, and one of the biggest challenges with home studios is in fact real estate. So what's the solution...is there a motorized control surface that accomplishes more, or is this cumbersome/unsightly oaf the most effective of the lot? Help us Obi-Loop Kenobi...you're our only hope.
@loopop
@loopop 4 жыл бұрын
I've not tried the others... but I agree with you about real estate. The search across the galaxy for the controller that will bring (warning: mixing pun coming) balance to our mix and is compact continues.

Thanks for this. I didn't even know about this product (seems pretty similar to Mackie's HUI controllers from a decade ago). Some questions: 1. Is there any point in getting this if you have a Push 2? And if so, can they co-exist or would you choose to use one at a time? 2. Would there be any point to creating a Max4Live instrument/plugin to handle the buttons/modes better?
@loopop
@loopop 5 жыл бұрын
Re 1: Budget permitting, I think so (using both). Push 2 is awesome but I prefer faders to knobs any day, and the physical representation with the motorized faders is strong. 2. I think that would be quite difficult... the 8 parameter/device limit isn't a deal breaker in my book and that's really the only reason for a script

The smart fabric that Keith Mcmillen uses also effectively works as a motorized fader, minus the moving parts, weight, cost, high current draw, etc.. They're not perfect (hard to see position in bright light, perhaps a bit less accurate), but would pick them over motorized faders in most cases. Of course, none of their offerings are very similar to this thing, but to answer the question "do moterized faders make DAWs better?", I'd say that the smart fabric (or some other touch strip) is generally preferable.

Great video, thank you... this might be a silly question, but what is the maximum amount of tracks you can control? I saw you flicking through them with the knob but is it possible to go through them like pages, e.g. Track 1-8, then onto to Track 9-16, then Track 17-24 etc. ? you showed something at around 3:35, but I didn't notice if it actually loaded up the next 8 tracks in your project once you passed track 8 so you have the next group of tracks (9-16) displayed on the mixer. Does the single fader version of this work as of 2023? Or does it still have the 8 track banking issue? I'm planning on buying it and using it with ableton. Any info would be great!

Hey, planning to buy an icon, xtouch or now fader port ? I'm only interested in mixing audio level for automations. (even the transport & shortcuts i won't use) one thing i can't find in any motorized surface is the ability for the controler to display ONLY the tracks selected in your DAW. is that possible with faderport ? i wan't to be able to automate say track #5 and #48 how to do that ? thx for video and help if you know about this ;)

moreau sylvain Made hey man I been searching n searching for more icon vids and only Lone Ranger and some other dude that’s it and most of the comments ppl are saying about the new QCON ICON PRO G2 is the company isn’t supporting the product and their multiple DAW integration just isn’t there tech support isn’t there and they are lying about the stated integration and there seems to be buggy and messed up units not being replaced but only repaired with ppl waiting months to get them back so I’m changing my mind now was gonna get both the G2 and the extender but now I’ll wait and check the FADERPORT 16 MAYBE

Is there a way to have return channels come up on the faderport so that you can control their level, for example? I’m unable to get that working.

Now it just needs motorized knobs, or endless encoders with led indicators as well and it could be the best Traktor mixing interface.

Im really intrested in a control surface for easier workflow but a question.. is there anyway to have the fader as clip gain instead of track volume? I rarely use the volume vs gainstaging with clip gain or the unity effect. The faders will be really helpful if I could do this.

Big question about midi mode. Do you get multiple pages of faders? I'm curious about using it with something like MPC Live and having a million faders would be quite handy. Also, does midi mode support motorized fader location feedback? I suspect not but would like to verify. Big thanks!

You could have the same & more for less in price with the Maschine Jam as it has touch faders with light feedback plus you get the whole Maschine software. And yes, a very clever Ableton Live script does come with it. Also, an ipad with Touchable or similar on it might be an alternative.

I'm late to this but, Ableton doesn't natively show timecode in it's transport. Does the SHIFT + TIMECODE function display it in SMPTE Timecode Format?

It has been fixed and you are no longer limited to 8 parameters; with the current firmware you can page through an infinite number parameters (via the Pan/Param encoder while in the Edit Plugins mode).

Hi, loopop!!! I need your help!! I work in Studio One 5 and the NI Kontakt sampler with orchestral libraries from Spitfire, Cinematic Studio and VST synthesizers of orchestral instruments from SWAM. To work, I need to control the parameters of dynamic automation (Volume, Expression, Vibrato, etc.) during the live (performance) of a musical part. I am considering buying a Presonus Faderport 8, because it is equipped with motorized faders. This is what is required in my work. I didn't find an answer to my question on the forum of the Presonus website. Please help me. For convenience, I will state my questions on the points: 1. Is it possible to link Presonus Classic faders (Faderport 8) to the volume, expression, vibrato parameters in each NI Kontakt orchestral library, so that they are constantly stored in memory for constant use? 2. I will be glad if item 1 is possible! You could have suggested how to configure this in Studio One:) 3. If points 1 and 2 are possible, will the Faderport 8 motorized feeders automatically connect to the already recorded dynamic automation settings? Thank you in advance! I really hope for your help!!!

So this is only an 8 track controller but you can switch it between different sets of 8, meaning if I have 16 tracks I can still access the 9-16 by scrolling the wheel?
