I suggest using a metal plate with the arm to increase stability and to protect from clamp damage. It really reduced the monitor bounce I experience with an ultra wide while typing.
@necrojoe
@necrojoe 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes just using a metal plate, especially if it's painted/powder coated, can skate around. Most nicer monitor arms have a thin, maybe 1/6th (1.5-2mm) thick, hard, grippy rubber on the bottom of the base. Not something so soft that it compresses and causes bounce issues, but just rubbery enough to prevent indentations, while still holding secure. This rubber *can* sometimes leave marks on the top, though, which is a bit of a bummer, but if it's natural wood, that spot is likely going to fade at a much different rate than the rest of the top, so the color wouldn't match anyway. 😅

@@necrojoe That can be easily remedied by sticking a thin piece of rubber or high density foam underneath the plate so you get the best of both worlds, even force distribution through the stiff layer of metal (like how a washer functions) and the friction and gripping power of the foam/rubber below.

Another mistake is clamping the arm to a cheap desk from the likes of Ikea, which is a thin layer of laminate sandwiching a honeycomb of cardboard. Clamping a small surface area to these desks will result in a disaster.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't - the outer 4-5cm where monitor arms clamp on are solid wood particle board, only the middle is paper honeycomb. But it's probably best to clamp near a reinforcement spar that runs alongside the leg mounts, to make it less inclined to warp the desk over time. However you can't use grommet hole mount, and you should think very carefully if you're using bolt-through in order to be squarely in the structural material of the desk, of which there isn't much at all. Then again it's best to think twice about buying that sort of desk surface to begin with. It can be inevitable under cost pressure, and it's easy to carry home weighing typically under 12kg at the largest size and often under 8kg, but it's somewhat unpleasant, amplifying every keyboard noise and such.

I have one of these Ikea desks and had seen reports of heavy monitor and arm combos breaking off, so I went to Home Depot and bought a pair of 16-ga galvanized steel electrical covers for a whopping THREE DOLLARS and used them as pads on the top and bottom of the desk under the dual-monitor arms base and clamp disk. This especially spreads the force of the disk out from a 2" circle to a 35 sq. in. (5x7) rectangle allowing you to really crank it down tight while the plates sandwich the desk and distribute the force. After 3-1/2 years holding two 27" displays, it's rock steady.

What kind of desk should I buy then? I was thinking of going for IKEA for my setup....
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 жыл бұрын
@@nyaa104 Well one option is to get a solid kitchen countertop surface instead. Even the IKEA ones are 100% particle board on the inside, solid, no voids. Or just go to a home improvement store and stare at their wood, they'll have all kinds, they'll have desk surfaces, they'll have countertops, they have them as particle board, they have them also as glued laminated timber, which is nice. You can use IKEA legs and stuff but you'll need to mark out and predrill the holes yourself. You can have the home improvement store cut it to length for you and seal the cut edge, or they'll sell you the edge separately and you just iron it on. IKEA desks come as 60cm deep (usually), 70 and occasionally 80cm. IKEA countertops are 63.5cm deep. Home improvement store countertops and desk surfaces can be 60, 63.5 and 70cm, at least here in EU. Also only the cheapest of IKEA desk surfaces are hollow inside, they make solid ones as well. Linnmon and now Lagkapten are hollow, i think the others are not, maybe ask them.

One of the things with the weight limits on monitor arms is that it's only holding the panel, and often a significant amount of the mass of the monitor is in the stand part, rather than the panel. For example, I've got a 34" Acer Predator WQHD (3440 - 1440 21:9 aspect ratio), which claims to be 14kg, on a Silverstone Monitor arm which has a weight limit of 10kg. It's quite happy on there, with no wobbling or sagging. I did have to tighten all the springs in the arm up to take the weight, but that was all it required.

My absolute favorite dual-monitor arms are the style with one heavier-duty arm, and a crossbar. You mount both monitors to the same cross bar, so they are always aligned and the spacing is locked, no matter where you reposition them. I can pull the monitors towards me, push them back, turn them to the side for easy info sharing with a guest, all with one hand on the grab bar at the bottom. An example of this would be the Humanscale M8.1 with Crossbar. If I needed to move both of my monitors individually, then I would much rather have two single arms, rather than one double like those included in this video.

In the office, I mounted a 40" with a monitor arm on the wall. Problem is that it's drywall without wood, so I basically put holes through the wall and mounted a plate on the other side to get a lot of area. But yeah, many monitor arms are garbage and also very fiddly. With larger weight, you have to turn some of the screws ultra-tight as they mostly rely on friction. I wouldn't mind shelling out more for a decent, smooth-running arm that supports more load.

The one thing I would add to this video: - Stores don't know what they are selling: the website may say that the arm is restricted to 32'' monitors and this is what they will tell you when asked, but you can buy up to 34'' for example, still have the weight to rotate 90º, and the weight restrictions are never met as a good arm monitor can support up to 9Kg and even an LG34'' is only around 6kg.

Bought a dual hydraulic arms stand for two 32° screens on amzn for about 70-80€ I think and it's good. However with one of my monitors it's at it's limit. On that particular monitor the Vesa mount isn't in the middle but at the bottom for whatever reason... when I want to stack the monitors one over the other while tilting the heavier one a bit down it gets too much. It's an omen 32° screen if someone wants to know and these are on the heavier side. My other 32° screen is from Dell and curved which hasn't that problem. Glad the reviews weren't fake for it and it wasn't that expensive in the end. Now I've got a new desk and two of those "static" mounts which are on the expensive side. They feel more robust but they're the kind which you can't easily tilt or rearrange without disassembling the whole thing...

I already knew all of this stuff, but it was great to see a video cleanly and concisely going over all of it like this, with examples! Great video! I wonder if any ultrawide mount systems use two wide gas/spring-arm clamps to avoid focusing all the leverage on that single point. You'd need a minimum desk width, but a system that floated between two arms would still provide most of the benefits of a mounting system, provided you have the right type of desk. Also important to note, monitor arm systems on something like an IKEA desk are especially prone to failure because of the uneven pressure placed on the desk surface that attacks the weakness of the desk's construction.

Take the back panel off (its just clipped in) and put the bracket on the middle and mark the holes. Push bolts through those holes (from the inside out) and put the back panel back on the monitor. Now the monitor will attatch to the vesa mount with those bolts. Just use matching nuts to secure it. Ive dont this 50 times and never had an issue. Its not as pretty but its functional. what i find strange that there isnt _the_ monitor arm brand. what you find on amazon is the same model from 50 different chinese manufacturers as with a lot of tech products. whats the herman miller of monitor arms?

Not sure what the point of this video was. I didnt learn about which arm setups would work best for 27" monitors. I didnt learn which arms work best to have multipile (3+) monitor setups. Is a large single wide screen best? curved? Vertical side monitors? What?

Really good advice. Can I ask for some more information around stability? I've just got a sit/stand desk and find that one of my monitors (currently on the default monitor stand that it came with) is very bouncy as a type, so I'm primarily looking at monitor arms to try and fix this problem. Are there any particular features of arms I should look for? Do you think this could help the problems (i.e. are arms typically better than regular stands?)

Hi Can you please tell me how deep is your desk in this video? I want to buy a desk but I'm afraid it will be too deep (any length will fit in my room). Yours looks pretty good and comfortable. Thanks.

Any suggestions on a premium monitor arm that requires a grommet hole and which would hole an ultrawide monitor? I can't seem to find this...

Whats a good mount for a dual 27" that would allow to tuck the arms as close to the wall and not moving monitors almost at the middle of the desk?

soooo my arm keeps going up after i set it downwards trying to match my other monitor its not even a heavy monitor at all and i cant tighten the other screw any more i dont think
@btodtv
@btodtv Жыл бұрын
In this case you need to LOOSEN the tension on the screw, not tighten in. Tighter tension will mean the arm will hold a heavy monitor without going up. So if tension is tight and you have a light monitor it will go up. Another thing to check is which direction actually tightens vs loosens. Some arms tighten when you turn left, not right. Hope this helps! - RG

Does the middle joint of the arm not turn far enough to allow it to be over the desk surface (left or right) instead of sticking out over the back of the desk? I've seen arms on Amazon that do that, so you don't need space behind the desk. (For single monitor arms.)

Most expensive table mounts are a complete waste of money of you are willing to use an old monitor as the mount and connect them together. Damage to any table can be avoided with two sheets of soft and hard materials.

Wall mounts are the best. I got a sit/stand desk, and I managed to find a wall mount with nice enough gas spring, and it's range is just enough for both sitting and standing use.
