Great advice from Braethorn, as usual. I'm close to buying a custom config'd Alexander PC and will make good use of the new "thorn" discount code! BTW, I feel the PRO version of any windows OS is definitely worth $10, even if you don't use its BitLocker feature to secure your data files. Why? Because it gives you much more control over Windows feature updates, which can be a royal pain. Murphy's Law says an update will be in progress...delaying availability of your PC...when you most need to get on line quick for some activity.

Hey, I just came across your channel. I like what you are doing. Please keep it up. I'm an old school gamer and a PC Builder. I like to find out the type of games a person like / love to play from Fortnite, Rainbow Six, & More. I always tell them to start with the CPU Intel or AMD. Using New or Used Parts. Having them to stay in their budget and save money.

I was not ready to pick out PC parts and build on my own. Based on information from you, I recently bought the Alexander PC Centurion with an I5-14600K, ASUS TUF RTX 4070 Ti, ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WIFI, 32 GB, DDR5-6400 Kinston Fury, Kingston KC3000 2TB NVME SSD, Lian Li Galahad II 240 AIO, Lain Li Lancool 215 case and 750W 80+ Gold PSU. I could not be happier with Alexander PC, especially the lifetime parts and labor warranty. I would highly recommend them. Thank you for your help.

The lack of optimization on all levels of games now is driving me up the wall. I may be exaggerating. But if things keep going the way they are you will need 500 gigs of RAM, 250 gigs of VRAM, and a petabyte of storage just run games in ten years.

That's what pre-builts are for! With an already working system, you have a great platform to make minor upgrades to until you feel comfortable enough to make larger upgrades and eventually build your own. That's how a lot of DIY enthusiasts get their start in the hobby :)

Well I messed up... should have researched prior to pulling the trigger like many others I'm sure. I got an alienware R16 with I9 14900kf (24 core), 64gb ram, 2tb m.2 pcle name ssd + 1tb hdd. Plus their AW3423DWF oled monitor. (Also learned I can't upgrade this thing and paid premium for the branding) I'm a complete newbie to pc gaming. I aspire to educating myself and eventually venturing into content creation. As of now with this setup my gf is playing sims 4 with mods and I'm playing just call of duty 😅. Great video! Storage has become more important starting in 2023 due to most games being over 100gb and randomly have upgrades that are 10 to 12 gb per upgrade. Flight simulators use much more in graphics storage an example is DCS with all maps can require up to 350gb.
@braethorn
@braethorn 3 ай бұрын
Wow, I've never looked into DCS before. That's a ton of storage! I imagine the speed of the storage is also important to reduce load times. Generally speaking, most PCs under $3k come with 1TB. It's just not enough these days. With the OS and three AAA titles, most of that space is gone.

The performance dept heads of AMD and Nvidia have both said cas latency is more important for gaming than raw frequency speed
@braethorn
@braethorn 3 ай бұрын
Generally speaking, yes. What I was talking about was the nature of Ryzen, wherein 1 to 1 memory synchronization, which is directly tied to memory frequency, can have more of an impact on performance than it does with Intel CPUs. I wasn't talking about the overall importance of frequency VS latency.

I have an FX8320, Radeon HD 7950 3GB Twin Frozr iii GPU, and 16GB of DDR3 RAM in a case that I don't use any longer. It just needs a PSU and storage. Should I sell the PC or give it away? I'm thinking about giving it away due to how old the hardware is and the fact that these specs aren't very good for gaming.
@braethorn

Yeah, I wouldn't sell that. You could always use it as a home theater PC.

How about a 4080 super with a 1440p monitor i9 cpu 14th gen ?
@braethorn
@braethorn 3 ай бұрын
As I mentioned in the CPU section, you don't need the i9 for that at all if the PC is just for gaming. The 14600K could handle that easily. The i9 would be a waste of money, use more power and create unnecessary heat.

Might disagree a bit on the price being cheaper for a DIY build vs. a prebuilt. My first PC i built was a 386, and have done so ever since. Back when i build it my DIY box was 30% of a retail pre-built... Plus i didn't get minimal card low-end components or configuration i.e. memory they get in with 2 or 4 chips... Fast forward to now, the saving may or may not be there depending on the the parts used. The pre-built machines companies often get discounts we as end users would never see... But say i go or a top end latest and greatest machine now. The price may be hit or miss, and my 2nd to last machine built was more expensive then a prebuilt, ah but with quality parts, and the price difference was a few hundred, but with the best parts.. And my last machine was a few hundred cheaper. Just saying do you homework and price it all out. Nice thing letting someone else built it everything will probably be compatible, and now a days not so much of an issue as it was back when i build my first 386... Or (hopefully) depending on the components you get, do they user the m.2 drive slots correctly, some machines it might matter which slot(s) are used...

so what motherboard would be perfect for streaming?
@backbaysailor
@backbaysailor 3 ай бұрын
I would say just to be safe and cover all bases, get at least an ASUS rog strix z790-E or AMD equivalent... It's not so much the motherboard that makes all the difference unless you have a lot of peripheral devices or have multiple pcie devices. The CPU, GPU, and ram will matter the most for streaming.
@braethorn
@braethorn 3 ай бұрын
That's going to depend on your budget for the overall system. You didn't even mention whether it's AMD or Intel. I do want to note that @backbaysailor did a great job of recommending the exact motherboard I suggested avoiding for a gaming system in *this actual video* lmao. That board is well featured for a streaming system, but for about $150 - $200 more than boards with similar connectivity from other brands. It's an easy recommendation unless you do your research. From what I've seen in general, Gigabyte motherboards have more rear I/O in lower and mid-range price brackets for both AMD and Intel. MSI is also making improvements in that area VS previous generations. ASUS has the tendency to be stingy with rear I/O on their lower end boards, so unless you don't have another option or have a big budget, avoid them. And to be clear, it is the motherboard that makes a difference for streaming systems, which I also mentioned in this video. Many streaming devices, especially external capture cards and audio interfaces, can be buggy when connected to a USB hub, which you will likely have to do if you pick a motherboard with 5 or 6 USB-A ports on the rear I/O. Since my videos reach a wide audience and many of them want to stream, I have to give advice that can cover all circumstances, including those who use many USB devices for streaming like I do. Better to have it and not need it, etc.
