Indian Foreign Services is one of the most underrated services within the UPSC framework.
From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was customary for UPSC toppers to choose the IFS. This has now changed dramatically.
Not only has the IAS supplanted the IFS as the service of choice but even the IPS and the IRS are preferred over the IFS by many applicants.
And WHY NOT?
1. India is served by the smallest diplomatic corps of any major country. Just to give you an example - US Embassy in Delhi has more diplomats than the entire Indian Foreign Services.
2. Indian diplomats are pushing files, answering parliamentary questions, receiving dignitaries, assisting the PM during the summit, and then greeting returning Indians stuck in Ukraine/Somalia at 2 am in the morning, and reporting back to work at 9 AM.
3. A single Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs has to handle India’s policies regarding China, Japan, two Koreas, Mongolia, Taiwan, a couple more regions.
Over worked-understaffed MEA doesn’t look like the ideal place to work. Or is it?
There’s another side to the brilliance of the Indian Foreign Services that the popular media and books haven’t covered yet.
And I will be talking to some of my friends in the IFS across countries to bring out those beautiful stories.
The link to the first video is in comments- enjoy, and do let me know your thoughts.
IFS Vs. IAS Vs. IPS
The first episode of the Money Heist Series will explore the lives of an IFS officer, their personal lives and professional lives, as well as the lessons he has learned throughout their career. This will make it easier for all of the IFS aspirants to clear all their doubts in detail.
Hope you’ll gain innumerable insights from the video. Listen to the story of Mr.Prathit Misra, IFS - who picked IFS over the IAS and is now studying at the Georgetown University.
3 years ago, I missed #UPSC final list by 8 marks. My score in optionals was amongst the highest in India, my interview score was second highest.
A few years later, I’m in Istanbul - discussing with one of India’s entry level diplomats, whether it makes sense for him to leave services and do an #MBA.
1. India changed : We aren’t a 20th century #economy anymore. With the advent of liberalization - state control of power shifted from Civil Servants to specialized professionals.
Current JS of Civil Aviation is an MBA from IIM A and was a partner at KPMG. There are 100 others like him who are laterally hired and contributing immensely through their work
2. Working for Society : If Sunder Pichai had cleared IAS- he would be working as a collector in Noida. Impact he has created is insurmountable to one he could possibly create while being in services
It is extremely critical that exceptional people join IAS, but for those who couldn't should know that entry through an exam isn’t the only route in 21st Century India to make a difference.
Many youngsters preparing for IAS in India quit their jobs, take multiple years of sabbatical, and thoroughly screw up their 20s - in anxiety and depression with a hope of getting into civil services (that has a yearly cycle, less than .5% success rate, and an archaic curriculum).
There is no better way to screw up your life than prepare for government exams in India (without any backup plan).
From a career in the United Nations to social impact, to getting laterally hired - you can do a million things to create a large-scale impact.
Do write to me, if you are crumbling under pressure because of a few bad decisions you made in your 20s. . Life is definitely more than an exam that the British created to recruit loyal servants.
Major topics covered:
- Indian Foreign Services: Analyzed by IFS officer, Ex-United Nations: Spouse, Kids, Lifestyle, home
-a day in life of an ifs officer
-ifs vs ias
-ifs vs ips
-ifs vs ias which is powerful
-ifs vs ias which is better
-how to become ifs officer
-ifs officer lifestyle
-ifs officer interview
-ifs officer status
-ifs officer salary
-ifs officer house

I choose IFS over IAS because I am obsessed with geopolitics secondly I am good at picking up new languages I already speak 8 fluently. The most important thing is that if you are a honest individual with lot of self respect then IAS will be extremely hard for you because it's almost impossible to work because of corruption let's be honest here. IFS officer can work without any hesitation and literally no one can interfere with your work.

I was always interested in history, political theory, philosophy, law, international idiosyncracies, etc, and I have always possessed a knack for general knowledge. I decided on the IFS in the middle of the 11th grade itself at the suggestion of my father, because as soon as the words "aap IFS kar sakte ho" left his mouth something clicked, and everything fell into place. Before that point I was extremely perplexed as to what I should do as a career because I wasn't very aware of the civil service and nothing else ticked all my conditions for a job; until, of course the IFS rolled around my brain and it just filled everything I wanted in an occupation, and then some. I can vividly remember how sheerly excited i was at the prospect. I am now aiming for it as I enter college this year, and I hope I get the chance to serve my great nation 🤗

I am a Drishti's Student.. And have never associated myself with Vikas sir's ideology or view about Civil services. The reason why IFS Is my first priority is that it allows you to bring the change that is happening in so called developed world to your country and gives you the opportunity to portray a positive image of your country at world stage.. 3rd reason is quite selfish! Being a marathon runner, I want to run in Boston Marathon, NYC marathon, London marathon, Munich marathon and many more!Well, That would Depend on my posting!😅 I Hope I will clear it some day!

Okay Sure Naman! I have already done R&D about GGI to an extent and also had a chance to gain insights from you on LinkedIn. I want to work for a public organization most preferably UN or its subsidaries, Red Cross and so on. Let's say I take a revelant course & complete it, what would be the scenario post that? I know for a fact that we get an awesome opportunity of networking here & I believe learning comes from top notch faculties. However, is there a placement that happens or an alumni referral or something else. I wanted some insights about post course completion? Requesting a little clarity.

@@God_Father72 We do have collaborations and formal partnerships. As of now, UN is not one of our partners. There are scholars from GGI who got into World Bank, and UNDP after the program - but they networked their way on their own. They connected with the speakers at GGI - who represented those organizations for referrals. Having said this, I'm vehemently opposed to the culture of placement (prevalent in India). This nonsense doesn't exist anywhere else in the world

The real reason majority aspirants put IAS as their first preference is that senior IAS officers remain closest to the power corridors and if we exclude departments belonging specifically to IPS,IRS then the rest is dominated by IAS officers. Pay, perks are also very unifrom in the IAS, fastest promotions since there are so many redundant posts in states and union or so many departments/districts in Indian States, State govts. already sent a request to Union Govt for IAS officers be deputed in respective states and that states are functioning with 50,40,60 percent of sanctioned strength for IAS officers in States. Work pressure is less, administrative and other powers are vested in them, esp. when they are serving in districts postings, they are also given law and order powers(Policing), judiciary powers,Revenue under IPC,CrPC and State Police Acts and other state specific(dealing with local subjects ) Acts. As I mentioned above that IAS remains the closest to the power corridors, they get in close contact of Union Ministers since they serve at secretarial level including Principal Secretary to PM,Advisers to PM, Chief Secretaries of State( who are like right hand of CM) Some choose IAS for they are well aware of the hierarchies of Civil Services and some choose IAS for it is an tacit understanding that this service is best and for toppers only.
