We are in a boom of backyard gardening and growing. many people have begun growing fruit trees in pots in their backyards, patios, and balconies. People sometimes don't realize how much space a root system requires to grow a strong and healthy tree. They leave their tree in a pot too long and it becomes root bound. This vid teaches you how to protect your tree from becoming root bound.

that's for the small trees and you could go longer but if you want the tree to grow you need to grow the roots along with the canopy.

Man... deja-vu... I just passed on an Utuado avocado tree someone was selling for a cheap price on Facebook Marketplace because of that. I went to look at it and it was the same deal... real thick trunk on the bottom... bad branching... looked terrible! I knew that tree had been there in that pot for at least a couple of years. I told the guy it was root bound and he swore up and down it was not, but I knew better. Great video.

Good video. Thanks. I agree that you shouldn't skimp on soil in containers but would caution those who grow in potting mix that when the level of soil inevitably degrades and sinks, they should lift the tree out of the pot and add the "soil" beneath vice on top of the roots. Most trees I purchase from "name" nurseries just top off their pots which can lead to rot above the root flare. I always have to dump or scrape out the added mix on top and place it beneath the roots.

I finally watered my avocado. I used 1mL of that insecticide and mied it with 1 L of water. I poured nearly a liter and none of that water got out from the drainage holes. There's a massive problem with the drainage. I also sprayed the stem as well as the remaining leaf with another insecticide. I dd that with my other avocado trees. My whole room smells like paint!

Sometimes it's always nice to watch some videos multiple times. Today I found out that there are multiple problems with my avocado tree. Instead of me buying perlite and a fungicide, I ended up buying an insecticide from the shop, and 3 small ieces I don't know what they're called, but apparently, they slowly release nutrients. Why insecticide? Well, this morning I took a closer look at the base of the trunk, I saw orange dots and then bugs crawling on the trunk. And there is an area with black dots, which aren't normal. Of course, it's not gonna be as easy. Of course there isn't only one problem, but multiple. Apart from root rot AND poor drainage, my tree is infested with APHIDS or THRIPS. First, fungus gnats killing some other avo trees in early 2023. Spider mites attacking my mango in August 2023, which then shifted into root rot. And now aphids? They could be mealybugs, but I doubt that. I should have started treatment sooner, I mean like my tree is in extremely bad state. The remaining leaf is still there, but the top quarter of an inch appears to have died back. The tree isn't firmly stuck to the soil. And these stupid drainage holes had caps or were closed this whole time. This is a disaster. The tree I've been taking care for over 2,5 years is declining rapidly. I should NOT have put him out 5 months ago for 2 weeks, it stressed him real bad.

Whenever I repot my avocados, I don’t wait until they have way too many roots in a such a small pot, but I don’t repot them yearly, well my two oldest ones. The two original avocados might be more like my singular OG avocado. Because my oldest one’s health I’ve talked about has been deteriorating rapidly over the last week. A month ago it had over twenty leaves. Today, my avocado tree has… ONE, just one singular leaf. The top 1/10 inch seems to be getting infected. My avocado was doing so well last year. But this winter it has done nothing, but dropping its leaves, wilting, disheartening me. I’m not even sure if it’s gonna make it. The soil smells extremely bad, there are lots of worms, probably earthworms or beneficial nematodes. It’s been over 3 weeks since I watered it and it doesn’t look thirsty. This is getting ridiculous, I pruned it, responded well for a week. But this browning is getting out of hand. If the top starts dying back, it’s over, I won’t be able to save it. The soil is dry, the pot is the lightest it’s ever been. My last hope is the buds. They are getting bigger and look rather viable and healthy. I don’t know though man

Hey Tom, Great video. What are your thoughts about planting trees in fabric bags? And will the roots air prune themselves once they reach the fabric, as many youtubers experts claim?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 5 ай бұрын
I've read that those bags are self pruning and while that may be true, there are some downsides for example. I've heard they don't last as long or they lose their shape and they don't hold moisture as well. But I have no personal experience with them so I really don't know. All I can say is most of my colleagues in the nursery business do not like to use them.

I don’t know if this would work with fruit trees/plants but in some other types of plants if you’re plant is root bound and already in as big a pot as you want it to be in you can actually remove the root ball from the pot and trim the root system back and repot it with fresh soil and it will start growing good healthy roots and will start shooting new healthy growth again.
@SleepyLizard

yes, that's the advice I give at the end about periodically root pruning the tree once you've hit max pot size.

Hello Tom, I live in Texas and have a hass avocado sapling with a single long trunk that is just 1 year old. A couple weeks ago it got real cold here and dipped to about 10 degrees F. It was in my garage but it still shriveled up and the leaves are all curled up and dead. The trunk has green spots and some brown spots. How do I tell if it will live? I planted a seed last year after I came across one of your videos and have really come to love it, would be sad to see it go. Thanks for the great videos as always!

Amazingly a really strong friend and I pick it up into a UTE to transport. So far the plant and pot are still intact, but unfortunately the plant still will need to get out as the owner kept it in a pot for 3.5 years 😢 Could I give it good nutrition in the pot for it to do better or take out and place in ground ?🤔

Would love to see what happens to that root bound tree after untangling it all. I wish this was something I knew two years ago when I started planting. Most of the trees I buy come this way riddled with root rot or root bound and the first few months tend to be me trying to rehabilitate the tree. Now when I’m at nursery’s or big box stores I’ve learned to pull the plants from the pot and investigate what’s below. Just waiting on the day I’m stopped by some employee wondering why I’m poking around in the pot 😂

I just did my sugarloaf from a 7 to a 15 gallon. Bought it a year ago in a 7 gallon. Roots were real tight and circling. Tree looks real healthy otherwise. Took a 3 prong garden tool and tried to break it up and some roots broke and tore. Hope it makes it. Did flower this year but gave me no fruit.
