Today I’m going to walk you through the design of the bolts of a side plate shear connection.
Let me know in the comments if you would like to understand forces on bolts of a moment connection as well.

A senior engineer once suggested that I design the connection based on the shear capacity of the beam instead of the reaction for good practice - to cater for future load increases for instance. So say in this example the beam had a shear capacity of 240kN (to sustain the 200kN shear force), I would calculate the vertical shear component of each bolt as 60kN. Is this something that is applied in Australia as well?

AS4100 minimum design actions are 15% of the member capacity or 40kN, whichever is the lesser. Often times I have to use a larger than required beam for construction/architectural purposes so adopting the shear capacity of the beam would be an overkill. Up to you how you want to go about it. Be careful with set rules like that. Some connections with prying action increase the load on bolts by 30%

I’m sorry how can I understand which force act on a connection? I don’t understand that.

humm..you have to understand the load paths. I will see if I can put together more videos on that
