Well I have never seen such a serene structural engineer. I have met some and all are running around all the time with pressure and burns on their heads due to mental stress.
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus5 күн бұрын
yeah.. In my opinion we have to play the long-term game. If it's not enjoyable and sustainable, there's no point in keep going. Of course there will always be stress involved. It's part of the profession (like many other professions), but it's about the balance.

onz thing is that a diaphragm (concrete slab) is a horizontal bracing, so it is a bracing. however, the overall structure misses vertical bracing. just to clarify, it does not mean that the slab (or diaphram) is not acting as bracing.
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus15 күн бұрын
yes. Thanks for the clear explanation :) The point of the video was more to remind engineers to follow the load paths and transfer the loads from the horizontal bracing to the vertical bracing and foundation. Just basic stuff that we miss when we're starting in the profession. Cheers

@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus17 күн бұрын

Do they use gum wood in framing too?
@zachariahh382327 күн бұрын
In NZ we have alot of old shop fronts that are bad for this we have alot of filled masonry walls at the back of the building and open glazing with canopies at the front supported by steel frames , it creates some bad torsional effects as the block wall is much stiffer than the frames

Hi. Should the Z not be Z= Bt^2/6 where t is the depth of the footing?
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus29 күн бұрын
Hi Frederik, Look at the bending moment direction. Now imagine a vertical beam going into the soil. The length of that beam is the depth "t". And the sides B and L are the dimensions to find Z. I'll probably have to get chatgpt to refine this answer haha but if you didn't get it, have a look at some books and compare to my video. Let me know how you go

Don't build that without a professional structural engineer advice. There's much more involved. You have to know the soil properties etc
