Was there on March 4th for a concert. was staying at the Marriott city center. Went to the food trucks, and people were smoking pills EVERYWHERE, the smoke was even going into the carts where people were trying to run their businesses, and everyone looked noticeably scared. No cops anywhere. After the concert, I decided to door dash so I am standing at the entrance to the Marriot, literally 2 feet from the badge in, and as I am watching a man have a mental health crisis in the middle of the road, two dudes cut across the street coming directly at me at an angle and got within about 10 feet before I realized I was about to be robbed literally in front of the lobby of the hotel. I badged in so damn fast, they ran off. I have lived in Oregon my whole life, even Portland for a minute, but you have to be either suicidal or a certified moron to want to move there, downtown should be condemned, it is horrible.

Just visited both Portland and Clark Country to see where my wife and I (early 30s) might move next year. After spending so much time doing research, we were set that we wanted to live in Vancouver and just needed to take a trip to check the best neighborhoods for us. So we visited both sides of the river this past weekend and I have to say I was so surprised by the results. Camas/Washougal/Fishermans were so suburban, old, and boring during our visit. There's just nothing to do and not enough places to explore commercially. DT Vancouver is cool and the waterfront will be awesome when it's finished, but walking around on the weekend and it still felt pretty quiet everywhere we went. We then went across and visited Portland, expecting the dirty, political, violent, unhoused armageddon that YT and the news had painted. Wow how surprised we were. It's such a beautiful and active city! AMAZING food and bars everywhere, tons of young people, cute lush neighborhoods, homes that have WAY more charm and character than the Clark C side. Yes, there is homeless, but it was wayyyy less than what we expected, mostly just cornered off to some areas, and in general, even DT felt safe to walk around in! We truly thought we'd feel the opposite on all these issues and fully expected to be choosing Vancouver over Portland, but at the end of the day, Portland is a better fit for us. I don't think you are wrong in your opinions Hannah, just wanted to politely share an opposite view point from your video and most of the comments here. Cheers all.

I agree with Redeye, quiet is good. My wife and I feel safe; so much that we can take our small dog out at midnight for a walk. I think we prefer boring and safe over the opposite. On top of that, I think Portland is not that bad of a drive from Vancouver for those evening/weekend outings.. Unless you're doing it daily then I understand needing to live closer. I wish you luck on your home search and hope you find a place that suits your needs.

Not only State income tax, but we also have Portland Arts Tax, Multnomah County Preschool Tax, Metro Supportive housing services tax, which could add another 2.5% income tax; all these taxes do not benefit you nor provide you with any return in any way if you're not a parent (nor planning to be one), or if you're not on the verge of homelessness. Another thing I hate in Portland is the noise: loud garbage trucks run at 2am to 4am, the trains blowing horns as there is no quiet hours enforced anywhere. It is a nightmare if you're a light sleeper.

So sad... Portland was a clean and well organized city pre-2000 when I visited relatives annually. It was actually the easiest major city to get around in - best roads and directions I remember. 50/50 Blue/ Red is always a better environment - people aren't as biased. I always forgot about not being able to pump your own gas - NJ is the same.

I moved to Seattle after years in CA. On my way up the coast, I stopped for two days in downtown Portland because I had a wonderful Portland experience years ago. Portland has such a cool old city vibe when driving in from the freeway. I checked into my hotel and decided to walk around the city and head to the park with my dog. Thank God I have a German Shepherd! I. WAS. SHOCKED. by all the homeless on drugs in the park. Defacating in the park and on the sidewalks. I walked by a groups of homeless smoking crack on the sidewalk in broad daylight. I do NOT feel safe and was shocked by the crime taking place day and night. I told all my friends that Portland is a cool older city but with rampant homelessness and drugs and that I would never come to Portland ever again. While I am considering retiring in Vancouver, my fear is Portland issues will migrate to Vancouver and ruin property values and the sanctity of Vancouver. Thoughts?
@LivingInVancouverCamasWash

No one feels safe in Portland anymore, unfortunately. Vancouver /Clark County is very culturally different. Portland's very radical political climate and lack of leadership has brought them the trouble, in most people's opinions. Vancouver is VERY different, with a good 50/50 political mix (and people get along regardless), family values, and a strong community. I doubt we will ever see the issues the Portland has, to the same degree

Big problem with Vancouver is no music scene for the kids. That was my biggest gripe being from there. Any show you want to go to will be in Portland. Don't care for corporate music. If you are young and want to go to a bar/all ages club, hang out, be around/meet similar people or just meet other people in general you are out of luck. There were 2 bars near where I lived, only bar bands played there, not anything exciting, no bands to follow/no flyers on the street, no one walking around in cool clothes/band shirts, etc. In Portland you go to a show, go somewhere after/grab pizza down the street, meet other people, go somewhere else, walk home at 1 AM, just have fun and live life.

Well, thank you for posting this. I think you squashed my desire to move to Portland. I was visiting friends that moved there from TX then on to Battle Ground within a year or so. That was from 1993-1997 ('97 last time there), I wanted to move there So Bad, I LOVED IT, but had reservations to leave all my family/friends again (airline employee who moved around for a bit) and the move would've been out of pocket too since the carrier I worked for was already operating. I've been tossing the idea again for the last 3 yrs; parents/grandparents gone now. I guess time has changed things there, I didn't see anything of what you described. It's so disheartening to hear.

Walking deliveries downtown and having to pass police in riot gear all staring at me suspiciously. I got out and now only drive in Vancouver. Portland scares me even more now. Too many himeless on drugs that make them get violent and break everything. Drivers held up by a guy with a blow torch. Sime man on fentynal chewing a MAX passengee's face off. I’m a Portland native. I hate the saying, “keep Portland weird.” It’s stupid propaganda from out of state people who moved here and are capitalizing off of our once beautiful city. It’s now ruined. They’re tearing down beautiful old homes & building condos and apartments at a fast pace. They don’t put in adequate parking in these buildings, so there’s rows of cars down city blocks & no where to park. I would never park in a parking garage anymore-too many break ins. The out of state people have ruined it. I feel sad every day.

Those are all bad areas. Phoenix proper is just one giant ghetto. I grew up in a rough neighborhood near 35th Ave. and McDowell. That was in the 80's. A lot of bad folks lived in that neighborhood. It hasn't really improved all that much today. On top of that there were two businesses that were doing some very illegal stuff in that neighborhood. One was some kind of a trucking facility. Apparently they were doing illegal chemical disposal. One of those disposals involved releasing chemicals into the air. I lived in a house close by and it was loud when they were doing it. Next to them was a propane company that had an illegal leach pit sitting in the ground behind their building. There was some kind of a chemical sitting in it. The chemical was in contact with the dirt. These two businesses were shut down in 1986. The place is now a big vacant lot that nobody wants because the soil is contaminated. I heard that 1 mile to the west at 43rd Ave. was even worse due to gangs roaming the area. The best places to live in the Phoenix area is outside of Phoenix itself.
